Types of Chemical Reactions

Chemical
Reactions
What have you learned so far about
Chemical Reactions?

Can you distinguish reactants

and products in a chemical
reaction?
Six Types of Chemical Reactions

1. Combination Reaction (Synthesis)

2. Decomposition Reaction

3. Single Displacement/Replacement

4. Double Displacement (Metathesis)

5. Combustion (Burning)

6. Acid-Base Reaction(special double displacement)

Types of Chemical Reactions

1. Combination Reaction (Synthesis)

Also known as Formation Reaction. When

Two elements combine to form a compound

Example:

A B B A

Example (Chemical Equation):

Salt
Types of Chemical Reactions

2. Decomposition Reaction

One compound breaks down into two or more

simpler compounds or elements (opposite of
formation reactions)
Example:
A B A B

Example (Chemical Equation):

Electrolysis
Types of Chemical Reactions

3. Single Displacement/Replacement

This is when one element replaces another element from a

compound. The more active element takes the place of the
less active element in a compound.
Example:
A B C A C B

Example (Chemical Equation):

Types of Chemical Reactions

4. Double Displacement (Metathesis)

This is when the positive ions (cations) and negative ions

(anions) of different compounds switch places, forming two
entirely different compounds.
Example:
A B C D A D C B

Example (Chemical Equation):

Types of Chemical Reactions

5. Combustion (Burning)

Also known as hydrocarbon combustion. This when oxygen

combines with a hydrocarbon (i.e. oil, fuel, natural gas) to
form water,
water, carbon dioxide, and heat.
Example:
heat
Oxygen fuel

Example (Chemical Equation):

Types of Chemical Reactions

6. Acid-Base Reaction

This is a special kind of double displacement that takes place when an acid and
base react with each other that involves the exchange of one or more hydrogen
ions (H+) between species that may be neutral (molecules, such as water or
electrically charged ions, such as ammonium (NH4+) or hydroxide (OH−)
(OH )
