Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

PowerPoint is a basic productivity tool that supports UDL in many ways. This tool offers the option to use the
tool dictate, which allows students to talk and the computer will type what is said. This tool can be accessed
on a laptop and tablet. This tool also has a draw function in which the students can draw on the slides.
PowerPoint allows for slides and notes to be turned into a movie, which allows students to listen to the notes
which is great for auditory learners.
Lesson idea implementation:
Day 1: The teacher will play the Earth and Its Land audio book for the whole class. After watching the video,
the students will have the opportunity to read the book in print in the class library or watch the video again in
centers. After centers, maps will be placed at each students’ desk along with markers and the teacher will call
out a continent and the students will place the marker where the continent is. The teacher will walk around
and assess how the students are performing.
Day 2: Next the teacher and the class will create an eBook together identifying the major oceans: the Arctic,
Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Ocean. The students will use PowerPoint to create the eBook and the teacher will
go through the process step by step to help the students create their book. If laptops are not available for
every student in the classroom then the teacher will organize a time for the class to go to the computer lab.
The teacher will have her screen displayed at the front of the class so that the students can see what she is
doing. The book will be turned into a movie that they students can re-watch.
Day 3: Students will be divided into 4 groups and assigned a landform in which they will research and create
an eBook that will be turned into a movie and played for the whole class. The students will be assigned one of
the following landforms: mountains, deserts, valleys, or coasts. The students will be given one day to research
and begin their eBook, and a second day (day 4) to finish up their eBook and record their readings. The
movies will be shown the following day (day 5).
This lesson will be implemented over 1 week. For students who need to review the content the books made
will be available in print in the class library and accessible online during centers.

Reflective Practice:
Having the students create their own eBook on where the oceans are located will help them to really
remember and understand their location because they are using this knowledge to create something rather
than just being told where they are located. This lesson could be extended by publishing the student’s books
online on the school website and putting the print books in the school library so that all of the first-grade
classes will have access to them. The other first grade classes could also be invited to view the movies made
on landforms by the students and the class could host a movie screening.
