Nelson Mandela Biography in English | President of South Africa
In 1994 South Africa held its first democratic elections. Mandela was the first elected President of South Africa. He was also the first black president of the country. His main aim was to kill racism and he ended the apartheid rule and established a new Constitution. After his first successful term, Mandela declined to contest for the second term and retired from active politics. The Mandela foundation and served as a mediator in the Burundi civil war. Nelson Mandela got the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 which he dedicated to Mahatma Gahndi, whom he was deeply influenced from. In 1995, he divorced his second wife. Mandela married his third wife Graça Machel, on his 80th birthday in 1998. He had 5 children. For his gret work in the anti-apartheid movement, The United Nation General Assembly declared Mandela´s birthday as “Mandela Day” in 2009.
