Program Objectives
The course should serve the following overall learning objectives:
 Acquire Knowledge on Remote control of Process Unit Operation from
Centralized Control Room through DCS.
 Module 13: Distributed Control System Operation(Intermediate)
o Control of different process parameters, ESD interlock settings, Alarms
and trip interlocks settings, Monitoring- Feed composition, Gas oil ratio,
average temperature, temperature profile, pressure, differential
pressure, control valve position. Change production rate and product
specification- manipulation of variables. Methods of controlling the
reaction (including rate and yield); effect of changing reaction variables.
o Reads processing schedules, operating logs, test results of oil samples,
and laboratory recommendations to determine changes in equipment
controls required to produce specified quantity and quality of product
o Observe automatic alarm signals and trends of alarms, initiate corrective
actions to correct alarms.
o Identify equipment variations/irregularities from observed DCS data and
trends, assess urgency and impact of activity, and communicate to
concerned divisions and/or personnel.
o ESD logics, start-up permissive and safety shut down interlocks and set
points. Interlock by-pass procedures
o DMC architecture- control variables, dependent and independent- set
points and impact on plant performance. Commissioning and de-
commissioning of DMC loops
