Personal Statement

Rajibul Haque Shumon

22 November 2010
The country I born in (Bangladesh) is a very poor country in Third World. My first language is not
English, it’s Bengali. English is a very difficult language, and learning it off by heart is very difficult but
I had the chance to study in English from my childhood. Many people choose their course at the very
beginning of their college life but I was undecided. Often people tend to take the course their elder
brothers are doing, that their father had done, or their friends are going to do. I did not have these
choices as I was brought up without my parents from the age of ten. As my country is one of the
poorest countries in the world, it also has not yet developed the facilities for computer studies. I
become interested in computers at the age of twelve, when I bought my first computer. When I
bought my first computers, I opened it and was fascinated by the components inside it and asked
the question “How does this thing work?”. So many questions came into my mind, that I found no
answers tp. That day, I decided to study Computers.

I had no idea where I should start; there were no computer related courses in my school. So, I
started looking for books, articles, magazines etc. to find anything and everything about computers. I
built myself an archive of information regarding computers and I was not pleased with what I
gathered because, the incomplete information on computers. I wanted to know more about the
core knowledge of computers. I was longing to study about computers but was held back for lack of
information. I then decided to go to England, where the technology is more advanced and
information on computers is more detailed. It was the best and toughest decision of life, but I was
dying to learn more about the subject I am most enthusiastic about.

Back in Bangladesh my home country, I use to repair broken computer. I was able to repair many
computers, mostly for my friends. When I left school, I worked in a local shop to repair computers in
order to gather enough money to travel to England and study computers. Later that year, one of my
grandfather’s gave me the money to travel to England and study for a degree in Computer Science.

When I arrived in England, I had no idea where to start. I wanted to learn so many things about
computers but found that it would take a life time to cover all aspects of computers. I decided on
Computer Science where I believe I can fulfil my dream of working as a Computer Developer.

Currently I am studying Access to HE in ICT, this is a very tough subject for me, not for my ability to
understand it, because of the English language I am also having to learn. I want to be a developer
and want to learn as much as I can about computers, all the things that I learn now, is interesting to
me but mostly, I find programming, graphics designing, building databases and Networking most
interesting.

I want to be, as I explained before, a programmer and a very successful programmer. I do not want
my knowledge about Science of computers to be incomplete and am very passionate about this
branch of computer studies that I have left my family, friends and country to pursue my dream.

Now my only obstacle to fulfilling my dream is to get to university. After searching universities I
found that your university provide the subjects I am hoping to study. Your learning environment is
excellent as I have been told this by students who have attended your university. I also understand
your university offers good support for international students. As an international student I have
experienced many changes in England, I had to get used to the weather and the culture, which is
very different than mine. In all this I have not forgotten my dream and I am looking forward to your
help to fulfil my dream and I would appreciate the chance of attending your university.
