visualizing, summarizing, inferring, determining

Chapters 2‐5: Make Inferences

As you read, use the clues the author gives you to
infer what is happening ("read between the lines").
• Using a sticky note, mark a place where a character’s
actions helped you infer a character’s feelings.
• Cite textual evidence to organize an action/
feeling chart for character’s feelings. Then, write a
paragraph to explain your inference.

action that you can infer a characters action(s).
feeling from.

Write a GSA paragraph to explain your thought process

and explain how you inferred what the character was feeling.
Example:
Action Pg. 9 Feeling
"He decided the best and safest The innkeeper is feeling afraid of
way would be to hurry through Don Quixote because he was trying
the ceremony of knighting." to hurry and get him out of there.

I can infer that the innkeeper was afraid of what Don Quixote was
capable of doing. When the innkeeper first met Don Quixote, he played
along and wanted to join in on his game. The innkeeper and his friends
had a good time laughing at Don Quixote. As soon as Don Quixote started
to become violent, the innkeeper decided to hurry him along. He knew
Don Quixote was not going to leave until he was dubbed a knight. He quickly
performed the ceremony and sent him on his way without charging Don
Quixote for the stay.

Chapters 2‐5: Make Inferences

As you read, use the clues the author gives you to
infer what is happening ("read between the lines").
• Using a sticky note, mark a place where you can make an inference
based on the text.
• Fill in the chart describing the inference you made and the evidence
to support your inference. Then, write a paragraph explaining the
context of your inference in detail.

Write a GSA paragraph to explain your inference and how the

text supported your ability to make this inference.

Example:
Inference Textual Evidence
The innkeeper is feeling afraid of 1) Pg. 11 Paragraph 2
Don Quixote because he was trying 2) Pg. 13 Paragraph 1
to hurry and get him out of there.

I can infer that the innkeeper was afraid of what Don Quixote was
capable of doing. When the innkeeper first met Don Quixote, he played
along and wanted to join in on his game. The innkeeper and his friends
had a good time laughing at Don Quixote. However, as soon as Don Quixote
started to become violent, the innkeeper decided to hurry him along. The text
states, "Fearing that he was responsible for letting the joke go too far, he
anxiously called on the drivers to stop their attack, reminding them that they
were dealing with a madman who would not be held accountable for his actions,
even if he killed some of them" (11). He knew Don Quixote was not going to leave
until he was dubbed a knight. Therefore, he quickly performed the ceremony and
sent him on his way without charging Don Quixote for the stay (13). Overall, the
innkeeper misjudged what was clearly a dangerous situation.

Chapters 6‐9: Visualize

• While you read, try to form pictures in your
mind of the characters and actions.

• Using a sticky note, mark a place in the text you could visualize
well.
• After you read, use descriptive writing and figurative language
to explain what you visualized in the text and how the image
deepens your understanding of the chapter.
Example:
Pg. 71, paragraph 2 & 3
The second and third paragraphs on page 71 create an image in the reader's
mind. According to the text the fight between the convicts and the guards,
ended with the guards fleeing the scene with stones at their heels! I visualized
the guards sprinting quickly away, convicts cheering loudly, Gines swinging his
pistol like a madman, and Sancho fearing the guards would exact revenge on them.
As stated on page 71, Sancho, feared that "the guards would raise a search after
them". I can visualize his worried face as he watched the guards run away with
their tails tucked between their legs! This brave act may have backfired because
now the convicts are free and the guards may search for Sancho and Don Quixote
later in revenge. Clearly, the author description created a strong image on page
71.
