Air Pollution 1 Minute Speech

A University College London study released this month has found that there is a

connection between higher levels of air pollution and a greater risk of

contracting glaucoma.

Figures show that people in neighbourhoods with high pollution, including many

deprived areas in the North West, are at least 6% more likely to have glaucoma,

a disease which damages the optic nerve and can eventually lead to blindness.

There are around 500,000 people in the UK who suffer from the condition and

around 10 percent of these people have gone completely blind.

Scientists believe air pollution may cause glaucoma due to the constriction of

blood vessels killing off the retina cells or by chemicals being directly toxic to

nerves.

Our country is getting dangerously close to the point of no return with air

pollution and severe action must be taken right now before our air becomes too

dirty to breathe.

Only by staying in the EU and working with other countries can we keep our air

clean and safe to breathe for ourselves and our children.

Illnesses caused by air pollution are now becoming increasingly common.

Irresponsible Brexiteers are making the decision to prioritise Brexit over our

country and the health of our country’s children.

They should be ashamed

We owe it to the next generation to stop wasting time over Brexit and get on

with tackling global crises like air pollution.
