Structural Design & Systems - VII
Paper - III
P. Pages : 2 KNT/KW/16/7734
Time : Three Hours *0745* Max. Marks : 70
_____________________________________________________________________
Notes : 1. All questions carry equal marks.
2. Solve any five questions.
3. Due credit will be given to neatness and adequate dimensions.
4. Assume suitable data whenever necessary.
5. Illustrate your answers whenever necessary with the help of neat sketches.
6. Use of non programmable calculator is permitted.
7. I.S.I. Hand book for structural steel section, I.S. Code 800.

1. Design a suitable fillet welded joint for a tie in a truss consist of pair of angles ISA 14
100  75  8 mm welded on either side of gusset plate 10 mm thick through the longer leg.
Take permissible stress in fillet weld as 108 MPa.

2. A bracket plate is welded to the flange of a column as shown in fig. Calculate the size of 14
the fillet weld required.

3. Show by calculation that it is advisable to connect the angle section ISA 90  60 10 mm 14
with a gusset plate 12 mm thick to act as a tension member with a longer leg only. Take
yield strength of steel as 250 MPa.

4. Explain any three.

a) Maximum and minimum size of the fillet weld. 4

b) Design wind speed as per IS 875 part - III. 5

c) Effective length of compression member for different end conditions. 5

d) Slenderness ratio for Tension & Compression members. 4

KNT/KW/16/7734 1 P.T.O
5. Design a single angle strut for a roof truss carrying a compressive load of 97 kN. Length of 14
Strut between c/c of intersection is 2.1 m. Also design the welded end connection.

6. Design a built - up column using two channels placed back to back to support 800 kN load. 14
The length of column is 4 m with both ends held in position but not restrained against
rotation.

7. Design a rolled steel I - section for a simply supported beam with an effective span of 6 m. 14
It carries a u.d.l. of 51 kN/m inclusive of self weight of the girder. Assume that the beam is
laterally supported.

8. Discuss structural behavior of following large span steel structures with neat sketches any
three.

a) Bow String Girder. 5

b) Geodesic Dome 5

c) Arches 4

d) Space Structures. 4
