Sri Harisarvottama Vayu Jeevottama

Dear Vaishnavas,

Sri Kanaka dasaru, one of the great Haridasaru, is believed to be Yamamsha sambhootaru. He has
composed Hari Bhakthi Sara, Which is full of sri Hari mahima and tatvas of Madhwa Shastra.
I am attempting to provide a simple translation of it by refering to Hari Bhakthi Sara with kannada
description by Sri. Chincholi Prahladacharya along with my word by word Meaning and discussing
on them. The text is in poetic form or Padya reethi.
The transalation is not the exact one of the referred book. But it reflects the bhava of the author’s
commentory.
Sri Chincholi Prahaladacharya is a well-known Hari Dasa sahitya exponent and is honoured by
many mathadhipatis for his tremendous knowledge in Hari Dasa sahitya.

LAya thambaka Roopa Chinmaya DEvaki Thanaya /
rAya Raghukulavarya Bhoosura
Priya Sura puranilaya Chenniga
rAya ChathurOpAya rakshisu nammananavaratha //1//

Sriyarasa, Who is lakshmi’s consort, praised by Bhishma, who is worshipped by Pandavas; who’s
eyes are like lotus, embodiment of gnana, DEvaki Devi’s son; Who is like moon for the ocean
called Raghukula i.e Sri RAmachandra, beloved of Brahmin, Chennakeshava who is in Belur, very
intelligent and tactful let him protect us always.
Sriyarasa: Sri - lakshmi , Arasa - lord =Lakshmipathy
GAngeya nutha: GAngeya - son of River Ganga
(Bhishma),Nutha-praised
Kountheya: Kountheya - Son of kunthi
Vandhitha charana: Worshipped feet
Kamala DalAya thambaka: broad eyes like lotus petal
Roopa chinmaya: icon of gnana (gnana murthy)
raya Raghukula varya:Raya- king,raghukula-king raghu’s clan,
varya- foremost king
Bhoosura priya: bhoosura- brahmins, priya- beloved
sura puranilaya: who is in sura pura here it is referred to Belur
Chennigaraya: Belur Chennakeshava
ChathurOpAya: The master of sAma, dhana, dhanda and bhedha
rakshisu: protect
nammanu: us
anavaratha: always
Sriyarasa: Here sri Kanakadasaru uses “Sriyarasa” in the begining, as it is auspicious to start with
‘Sri’. Due to this Haribhakthi sAara has become highly esteemed grantha. This word Sriyarasa
carrys a great Meaning in it.
It is not just a word to address sri Hari. If we know the position of Lakshmi in vedas and her
powers we will understand the greatness of NArayana who has become husband for her. Just one
glance of Maha Lakshmi will grant Brahma his position (Brahmapatta).
Lakshmi has been praised by DAsaru in various Devara nAmas. She is capable of doing everything
next to god. Lord Srihari married her not for her beauty but for her enormous devotion towards
him. So god will be pleased by ananya bhakthi, to make it clear Kanaka dasaru has named this as
Hari Bhakthi SAra .
GAngeyanutha: Bhishmacharya delivered the greatest upadesha to Dharmaraja in Shanthiparva in
the presence of lord sri Krishna.
Mahabharatha is known as the fifth Veda so this is a very sacred sthothra, which was praised by
him when he was laying on Sharamancha (Bed of Arrows).
Kountheya Vandhitha Charana: Here the first Meaning of the words is that he has been worshipped
by pandavas and also to be understood as his devotees worship him. He grants his anugraha by
accepting the seva done by his bhakthas.
KamaladalAyaThAmbaka Roopa chinmaya Devaki thanaya:
These words were used by dasaru to signify that the roopa which is meditated by his devotees is
sAkAara i.e. icon filled with full beauty, Bliss and gnana. He is Aprakritha, Only available for
gnana through dhyana.
Devaki thanaya and Rayaraghukula varya: Devaki thanaya is Sri krishna and Rayaraghukula varya
is Sri Rama. Why kanaka dasaru has used these two names at the same time? Because it conveys
the Abhedha for Avatharas, There is no difference between the avatharas of sri Hari.
Bhoosura priya: Dear to Brahmin who strictly discharges his duties and who is in the right path (as
per the shasthras) , as the saying goes “Go Brahmana Hithayacha”Protector of Cow and brahmin.
Sri BhArathiRamanamukhyaprAnAnthargatha Sri KrishnArpanamasthu.

Respected friends,
I am posting the second padhya of SriHaribhakthisara. Here I wish to make a point which I forgot
in the first posting. There are totally 108 padhyas. I will be dealing in detail till the 15th padhya in
which kanaka dasaru praises sri Rama. There after the padhyas mainly deals with various aspects of
life and sadhana and how Sri Hari mahima is evident along the lines of madhva siddhantha. So
those padhyas may not have word by word Meaning instead it will contain the sArAmsha of the
padhya and explanation.
DhEva dhEva jagadbharitha vasu
dhEva sutha jagadhEkanAthara
mAvinOdhitha sakalasajjanavinutha gunabharitha /
BhAvajAri priya nirAmaya
rAvanAnthaka raghukulAnvaya
dhEva asura virOdhi rakshisu nammananavaratha //2 //

Lord of all gods, omnipresent, vasudhEva’s son, the supreme entity, consort of lakshmi, worshipped
by the learned, full of good qualities, shiva’s beloved, who killed rAvana, greatest among the
raghuvamsha, enemy for the demons, always protect us.
dhEvadhEva: god of all gods nirAmaya: not sufferred at any point of time
jagadbharitha: jagat- world , bharitha – full rAvanAnthaka: rAvana - demon rAvana ,
filled or complete filled anthaka - killer
vasudhEva sutha: VasudhEva’s son raghukulAnvaya dhEva: the Kula devata for
ramA vinodhitha: LakshmilOla Raghuvamsha
sakala sajjana vinutha: sakala - by all, sajjana asura virOdhi: asura - demons, virOdhi -

vinutha - who is praised rakshisu: protect
bhAvajAri priya: bhavaja - Manmatha, ari - namma: us
enemy, priya - beloved anavaratha: always

DhEva dhEva: Here kanaka dasaru wants to convey the Sarvoththamathva of lord sri hari. This is
the foremost goal of all hari dasas in their works i.e. to proclaim the supremacy of NArAyana over
all other gods. He is the Lord of Brahma, Rudhra and other gods.
jagadbharitha: Sri Hari is omni present. He is indweller of both animate and inanimate matters. As
it is said:
“Thruna modalu BrahmAntha”
vasudhEva sutha: Dasaru has said vasudhEva sutha instead of saying krishna because in the
previous padhya he mentioned as dhEvaki thanaya. According to shasthric view if it is only
mentioned as son of the mother the doubt of chastity may arise. Hence by saying son of the father
the serenity of the birth is made clear.
jagadhEkanatha: NArAyana is the only supreme king of the whole universe. Dasaru often stresses
the Hari sarvottamathva. He mentions dhEvadhEva and again he says jagadhEkanAtha. Krishna is
the one and only lord in the whole world. As there can be no lord for an unreal world it is clear that
he is lord for the real world. So from this we can know kanaka dasaru is upholding the tenants of
madhwa shastra as against the Mithya vAda.
ramAvinodhitha: Sri Hari gives Ananda for RamA devi but he never expects any thing from her. He
is “svaramana” means he is fully contented within himself it can never be said that he got
happiness from something. He is giving pleasure and happiness for RamA with his Karunya.
Here it may be right to mention one padhya from harikathAmrutha sAra -

Here it is says when lakshmi could not understand sri hari’s guna or his actions she thought Am I
going to be his wife? Then sri Hari accepted her like a king having feast at a begger’s house. sakala
sajjana vinutha: He has been praised by so many learned gnanis, yogis , rishis etc... The
aparokshagnanis will praise him and do penance without food and water for years together just to
see him. He gives darshana by his grace. Gunabharitha: Lord sri Hari is full of good attributes and
there is no place for any dhosha. He is saguna and embodiment of infinite good qualities .
bhavajAri priya: Manmatha was burned to ashes by Rudhra. Rudhra has won kAma (Kamahara).
Lord Krishna is dear to that great shiva. nirAmaya: There is no dhukha for NArAyana. He never
experiences an aota of sorrow at any time. rAvananthaka: RAmA killed rAvana along with
khumbhakarna who are jaya and vijaya as he had given boon for them that they will be killed only
by NArAyana. raghukulAnvaya dhEva: King rAma is like a god in raghu kula who looked after his
Subjects
Subject very well. In history it is famous as RAma rajya. There was no sorrow to any of his
Subjects
Subject during his reign. asura virodhi: Lord vishnu is enemy for demons. Whenever the demons
rise he will end them and protect the good people.

God, he who has infinite merits, ocean of kindness, considers his devotees one among his family
member and stays in the heart of yogis, omnipresent, always an icon of bliss, praised by the vedas,
lotus bellied, granter of moksha, who killed demon mura, who has JanArdhana roopa, flawless in
the three worlds, worshipped by gods , lord protect us always.
anupamitha chArithra: anupamitha - uncomparable or count less ,
chArithra - virtues or merits
karunA vanadhi: karunA - kind, vanadhi - ocean
bhaktha kutumbi: bhaktha - devotees , kutumbi - family member
yOgi janahrudaya: resides in yOgis heart
paripoorna: present every where
nithyAnanda: nithya - for ever , Ananda - happy
nigamanutha: nigama - veda, nutha - praised

anupamitha chArithra: Sri Hari’s virtues are infinite, he is the icon of good qualities. His qualities
are endless ,it can’t be compared to anyone.
This is clear when we understand that Lakshmi who is vedAbhimani comprehending his unlimited
gunas still is unable to complete. Sri Vadirajaru in Lakshmi Shobhane describes as -
Ondondu gunagalu iddavu
Ivaralli sandanisive bahu dhosha /
Kundhellastillada Mukundane
thanagendu Indire pathiya nenedalu //

karunA vanadhi: Krishna is very kind hearted . He is the supreme god but he will hear to his true
bhaktas and even become their servant. He is guarding King Bali’s house. Let him here our prayers
and protect us.
bhaktha kutumbi: He treats his devotees as his family members. He considered pandavAs like that,
and hence did all types of service to them.
yOgi jana hrudaya: YOgis are people who think of god in every action they do. It is not necessary
for a person to be always in forest doing penance. Even though being in samsAra and loving god
much more than the worldly pleasures , the person is called yOgi . God will always stay in their
heart because they are dear to him.
paripoorna: He is complete within himself, where as he dwells in and out of the universe. Here
sarva vyApthathva is established. (Anurenu thruna kastha paripoorna Govinda.)
nithyAnanda: He enjoys full bliss all the time. There is no break for it as against jeeva who enjoys
swaroopa ananda after mukthi, which is uncomparable to Sri Hari’s bliss.
nigamanutha: Vedas are praising him which are apaurusheya granthas. Still they have not
completely dealt with his infinite qualities.
vanajanAbha: A lotus came out of his belly from which brahma was born and hence he is called
padma nAbha or vanaja nAbha.
Mukundha and JanArdhana: mukundha means who grants moksha and it is through Janardhana
roopa he grants it. So both names have been mentioned together.
muramardhana: krishna killed demon called mura so he is also called as murAri. thri jagathpAvana:
vAsudeva is sacred for the bhoomandala and the worlds above and below it. The water after
washing his feet was considered as holy. This is very nicely explained by Sri Vadirajaru in Lakshmi
Shobhane

surArchitha dhEva: He is worshipped by all other gods as he is sarvoththama. No one is equal or

above him. Rudra will be chanting RAma mantra always and narates its greatness to PArvathi.
Indra worshipped Krishna as supreme and called him Govinda.

Who has been praised by brahma, worshipped by Indra, pious charactered, who wipes off the sins
of his devotees, O RAma , who is the one worshipped in the whole world, who exists in each and
everything in the universe, very brave, who is a nightmare for the wicked, Sita’s husband,
shEshashAyi, garudAruda, manmatha pitha protect us for ever.
kamala sambhava vinutha: kamala - lotus , sambhava - procured,
vinutha – praised; vAsava namitha: VAsava - Indra , namitha – prayed; mangala charitha: mangala
- holy , charitha – charatered; duritha kshamitha: duritha - sins , kshamitha – forgiver; rAghava:
Rama; vishwa poojitha: jagadhwandhya
vishwa vishwamaya: pervaded in universe; amitha vikrama: very brave; bhima: scares the wicked
sItA ramana: Sita’s consort lord sri rAma; vAsuki shayana: sheshashAyi; khagapathi gamana:
garuda vAhana; kanjananayya: father of manmatha; Rakshisu nammananavaratha.

vanaja sambhava vinutha: At the begining of this universe when brahma was born through vishnu’s
nAbhi kamala he did penance and praised lord. Brahma will do SriHari dhyana constantly as he
doesn’t have agnana at any time. The worship he does is of the highest level of all the jeevas and
next only to lakshmi.
Vasava namitha: Indra is the king of suragana. He will woship Narayana at all times. We can just
remember here one of the incidence - Govardhanodharana. Once the cowherds were preparing to
do poja for indra who gives rain. Instead of this, krishna asked them to worship Govardhana who
was helping them and their cows. By this act indra got angry and showered continuous heavy
rains . To protect the Gopalas Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhana parvatha (mountain) under which
all of them took shelter. After 7 days of continuous rain Indra came to Krishna , requested him to
pardon and praised him as “Govinda”.
Mangala Charitha: Vasudheva is having distinguishing qualities. The Roopa, qualities, actions of
god are Mangala. These stanzas are mainly refered to Sri Ramachandra so when has been addressed
as Mangala charitha.
Duritha Kshamitha: Keshava will forgive his devotees of their count less sins. He is kind hearted
for his devotees as jaganathadasaru says-
Papa karmava sahisuvede
Lakshmi pathige samarada dhivijara
E payoja bhavAndadolagAvalli nAkAne /
gopa guruvina madadi brugu naga
chApa modalAdavaru mAddha
mahAparAdhagala enisidhane karunAsamudra Hari //

The is no other god in this universe who tolerates the bad actions of his devotees like Sriman
Narayana. He did not count the sins of his bhakthas and blessed them for their devotion.
Raghava, vishwa poojitha vishwamaya: King Rama is the one and the only one who is worshipped
by all and he is the antharyami of all . Here it is important to know the thathva that “Sarva deva
namaskaram keshavam prathi gachathi”. When we worship other deitis also it will ultimately go to
Sri Hari. He is the person who fulfils our wishes through them. In this padhya it is established that
Sarvottama and Sarvantaryami of the world is none other than SriHari.
Amitha vikramabhima: Noble RAma is another name for Braveness. He was a great warrior , he
killed VAli with a single arrow. Young RAma killed many of the demons who were troubling the
rishis. Ten headed Ravana and his soldiers were killed in battle as a game.
Sita Ramana: He is the husband of Sita who is none other than Lakshmi. She is NithyAviyogini,
she will be with him at all time and in all places. So there was no Viyoga for them.
vAsuki shayana, khagapathy gamana: He is resting on Shesha who is having 1000 heads. He is
travelling on Garuda. Here we can see that both Garuda and Shesha are his prominent bhakthas.
Kanjajanayya: He is the father of Manmatha.

Sri Hari Sarvottama Sri Vayu Jeevottama

I wish to post the fifth sloka of Sri Hari bhakthi sara of Sri Kanaka Dasaru.
Kshira vAridhishayana shAnthA
kAra vivida vichAra gOpI
chAra navanItha chOra, chakrAdhAra bhavadoora /
mArapitha gunahAra sarasA
kAra ripusamhAra thumburu
nAradapriya varada rakshisu nammananavaratha //5//

One who is resting in kshirasAgara, who is shAnthamurthy, indweller of all, lord of gopis, who
stole butter, holding chakra and not bound by the samsara, begot manmatha, complete with good
attibutes, very charming, destroyer of the wicked, who loves Music of NArada, who fulfills the
wishes of the devotees, let him protect us for ever.
kshira vAridhi shayana: kshira- milk, vAridhi - ocean, shayana - who is resting
shAnthAkara: shantha - calm, Akara – murthy; vividha vichAra: antharyami of all; gOpichara:
gOpi - Women of gokula, chAra - sweet heart; navanItha chOra: navanItha - butter, chOra –
stealer; chakrAdhAra:chakra - Sudarshana(the disc), dhAra - who is holding;
bhavadhoora:bhava - samsara, dhoora – liberated; mArapitha: mAra - Manmatha, pitha - parent
sarasAkara: pleasing personality; ripusamhAra: ripu - wicked or enemy, samhAra - destroyer
Thumburu NArada priya: dear to nArada; varada: giver of boons

kshiravAridhi Shayana: SriVishnu is resting on Shesha in kshirasAgara. KshrisAgara is the abode

of vishnu. So in one of the Devaranama, Dasaru says SriHari habited in his father-in- law’s house
along with lakshmi as Lakshmi is daughter of Samudra (king of Oceans). Here we may get a doubt
how can there be a milk ocean or like Saptha SAgaras Ocean of Honey, Curds, Ghee etc... As we all
have experienced the taste of the sea as Salt ( Lavana sAgara ) same way those Oceans will have
the taste of their respective names.
ShAnthAkara: NArAyana is very calm, he is never prone to anger. As told by gnanis, Anger is the
action which arises from our sins and which also leads to sins. God is never susceptible to
Arishadvarga. This was evident by the hospitality he showed to Brugu rishi when he striked his
chest.
Vividha vichAra: Lord MAdhava resides in every matter. There is no place without god. He is
within and outside the our body and also in the world. This he showed by incarnated from
Sthamba( Pillar) for Prahlada.
GOpichAra: Lord Krishna was the spirit of all gOpis. They enjoyed each day with him. They left
their houses for him and joined him for RAsakrida on the bank of River Yamuna. They were
desperate when Krishna disappeared . GopiGeetha is the composition which they all sung and
begged Lord Krishna to appear. Later he appeared for there devotion.
NavanItha chOra: Krishna was stealing butter and curds from many cowherds house. VAsudeva
never desired for their butter or curd, when he can create ocean of butter and curds with his ichcha.
He was stealing there sins in the form of butter to make them pure.
ChakrAdhara: Lord vishnu is decorated by Sudarshana chakra. This, he is holding not for his
security, but to protect his devotees. He used this when he guarded King Gajendra from the clutches
of the crocodile. He had also given this to king Ambarisha for his safegaurd. It chased Dhurvasa
when he tried to test Ambarisha.
Bhavadhoora: He is not bound by this vicious samsara. Instead he liberates the good one from the
miseries of this world and gives moksha.
MArapitha: He is parent of manmatha. Manmatha is the most handsome among devathas. His
charmness was due to grace of Sri Hari.
GunahAra: He is having infinite Gunas. It is not possible for
Lakshmi to count his gunas. Sri Jagannatha dasaru says-
Prlaya Jaldhiyolulla nAveyu
HolabugAnade sutthuvandandi
Jalaruhekshananamala gunaroopagala chinthisutha /
Neleya kAnade Mahalakumi Cha
chalavanaidihalalpaJeevari
galavuduvudEnivana mahimegalI Jagathrayadi //

Mahalakshmi is unable to understand his guna like a boat caught in a deluge circling, as there is no
shore or end for his gunas. If that is the situation of Lakshmi how can an alpa Jeeva understand
him.
SarasAkAra: He is the charming and most beautiful icon . There is no other object beautiful than
him.
RipusamhAra: He crushes the evil He incarnates on the earth for the destruction of the evil and to
protect the good.
Thumburu NArada priya: NAradaru always praise SriHari by singing his noble qualities. Lord
listens to his music which is great and having class of its own. So in one of the devara namas it is
said -

Thumburu NAradara gAna keluva Hari /

nambalAra E dambara koogata //

Varada: Krishna fulfills the wishes of his bhakthas and he looks after their welfare. So he is
called Varada . He blessed Sudhama with both kingdom (Iha) and moksha (para).

Subject Re: Haribhakthi Sara Part - 06

What I am not able to follow in the translation of this verse is how ‘sutrama’ is interpreted as
Indra. Can any body explain the derivation here?
Why not ‘virachitaKama’ be interpreted as ‘Manmatha’s father’?
Regarding ‘haladhara Rama’ ,I feel it should be possible to interpret this as applying directly to an
‘avatar ‘ of Sri Hari as this word is placed between ‘Bhargava Rama’ and’Dasaratha Rama’ both
of which are avatars of the Lord. I am not able to make this out anyway. One thing strikes me. The
Visistadvaitins treat Balarama as one of the 10 avataras (they drop’Buddhavatara’). Is
Kanakadasaru influenced by this? Or, Balarama has also an amsa of the Lord. Kanakadasaru
might be referring to this.
Best wishes,
Bannur.R

Dear Sri Balakrishnan Baskar,

It has been mentioned in Harivamsha that Yashoda ans Nandagopa are amsha of Kashyapa and
Aditi. The story goes like this - Kashyaparu asked Varuna to give his cows for the yagna which
kashyapa was about to perform. He didnot retun the cows after the complesion of his yagna as per
the wishes of his wives( Aditi and Surabhi). Varuna requested Brahma to get his cows back. Then
Brahma understood the situation of varuna and the mistake of kashyapa. He cursed Kashyapa to
take birth as cowherd in bhooloka. He was born in Mathura as Vasudeva along with his wives
DEvaki and Rohini.
Brahma told this story and asked Vishnu to take birth in Bhoomi as Krishna in vasudeva and give
ananda to Vasudeva, Devaki , Rohini and Yashoda and Nandagopa which was another form for
Kashyapa and Aditi. They had done penance for this reason.
You may refer to Sri Harivamsha MahApurana written by Sri PandarinAthAchar Galagali for more
details.
Regards
Badarinath
.

Dear Shri Badari.
Thanksfor the excellent postings on Haribhakti Sara.
In the Part 7 of the series you had mentioned that Yashoda and Nandagopa were Aditi and
Kashyapa in the previousw births.
This seems to be slightly controversial.
According to Srimadbhagavatham,Chapter10,Canto3,Shlokas 32-45 The Lord appears before
Devaki and Vasudeva in full splendour with chaturbhuja and narrates them about their previous
births in 7 shlokas.
Accordingly, the first birth was Prisni and Sutapa, the second birth was Aditi and Kashyapa and
this was the final birth for them and the Lord said that they were to be emancipated in this birth.
Yours in the Service of Sri Harih,
Dr.B.Basker.

Son of Yashoda, who is beyond Nada - Bindu - KalA, protecter of Prahlada, O Narasimaha protect
us always.
VEda gOchara: Visible to or understood through vEdas; VEnunAda vinOda: vEnu - flute, nAda -
tone, vinOda – pleasure; Mandarashailadhara: Mandara shaila - The mountain “Mandara” ,
dhara – holder; MadhusUdana: Madhu - demon Madhu, sUdhana: destroyer
Achchuta: A - No or negetive, cHuta - flaw or dhosha; KamsadAnavaripu: Kamsa - kamsa, dAnava
- demon, ripu – enemy; MahAmahima: Noble
YAdavEndra: YAdava - Yadu’s dynasty, Indra – Supreme; YashOda nandana: Son of YashOda
NAdabindu kalAthishaya: NAda- Bindu - KalA - Popular tatvas; in Agama shastra, athishaya –
surpassing; PrahlAda rakshaka varada: PrahlAda rakshaka - protector of; PrahlAda, varada –
granter of favour

VEda gOchara: Sri Hari can be seen only through proper knowledge or gnana gochara. He is
visible through Apaurusheya vEdas and nothing else. Here sriman Mahabharatha which is
considered as the fifth vEda is to be taken into account along with the 4 vEdas. If we go further, we
can see even vEdas are unable to define him completely.
As Sri Purandara dasaru puts - “ Nigamake silukada aganitha mahimana “ and

Sri Jagannatha dasaru says -

“Bharatha nigama thathigala athikramisi kriyA vishEshagala”.
Here Sri Kanaka dasaru clearly states that HaridAsa Sahithya is the translation of all Shastras and
VEdas.
VEnunAda vinOda: Lord krishna by keeping the flute on his lips brings wonderful music which
was very pleasant to hear not only for the residents of GOkula but also for Devathas and Animals.
They had not heard such a melodious tone and they enjoyed and they got immersed in it.
Mandarashailadhara: Sri Hari took KurmAvatAra and lifts the sinking mandara parvata during the
KshEra samudra mathana.
MadhusUdana: In the earlier times two Rakshasas took birth from Hari’s EarWax. One who
was soft called Madhu and another hard called as Kaitabha. When they tried to swallow Brahma, he
prayed lord vishnu. Then Lord Vishnu killed the Daityas. So SriHari was called as MadhusUdana
and KaitabhAri.
achchuta: SriHari is called achchuta since he is free from all flaws.
KamsadAnavaripu: Krishna was the enemy of Kamsa. Kamsa was under constant fear that he
would be killed by Krishna. He used to see krishna in dreams as his antaka.
MahAmahima: Sri Hari’s mahima is apAra.
As Sri Sripadarayaru puts it -
“apAra mahima purAna purusha ghora duritagala doora mAdiso” indicating the supremacy of lord
sri Ranga vittala.
YAdavEndra: The Yadavas understood the great acts done by Krishna and hence considered him the
supreme among Yadavas.
Yashoda nandana: Lord Vishnu came to the earth as Yashoda’s son. Yashoda and NandagOpa are
Adhithi and KAshyapa who did penance for long time to get the supreme god as their child. So
they are gnanis and did seva to Lord Krishna by enjoying his childhood.
NAdabindu kalAthishaya: These are the popular tatvas often used in Agama shastra. Lord Sri Hari
cannot be fully described by them also. Here it is said he is available only through true Bhakthi and
through his grace. They are the only ways for salvation of Jeeva.
PrahlAda rakshaka varada: Sri Narasimha protected PrahlAda by appearing out of a pillar as
Narasimha. So there is no father , mother, kith or kins for Sri Hari. He comes to protect his
devotees in which ever form he likes and nobody can understand him.

One who is eternal, protector of refuge seeker, ShrIvksha, wearing Kousthubha, giver of moksha,
punisher of the wicked dAnavas, lotus eyed, who has garuda(eagle)as his vehicle, who sides the
devathA gana, lord of the universe, friend of mahaRudra, O the almighty protect us always.
akshaya: a - no, kshaya – deterioration; Ashrithasujana jana samrakshana: Ashrita -dependants,
sujana jana -; virtuous people, samrakshana – protector; ShrIvatsa: mark on his chest in which
lakshmi resides.; koustubha: a precious jewel; moksha dAyaka ; moksha - liberation , dAyaka –
bestower; kutiladAnava shiksha: kutila - wicked, dAnava - demons , shiksha - punisher
kumudAksha: kumuda - lotus, aksha – eyed; pakshi vAhana: pakshi - Bird (Garuda), vAhana –

nigama - world , vEda, adhyaksha - chief varanitilAkshasakha: varanitilaksha - who is having a
eye in his forehead - i.e., shiva or mahaRudra , sakha - friend sarvEsha: Sarva - all , Isha –
supreme.
akshaya: Lord is eternal (Shashvata) and is ever lasting without any loss or gain, since he is purna
Ashrithajana samrakshana: God comes to rescue his bhakthas when ever and where ever they pray.
For instance he came from vaikunta when Gajendra uttered his name while suffering from the
cluthes of crocodile. He came from a pillar for Prahlada.
Shrivatsa: This is the mark on sri Hari’s chest in which sri MahAlakshmi resides. She is
NtyAviyogini. She can never be seperated from him since lord is eternal. Only Sri Hari has this
kind of mark .
Here we can remeber the incidence when Poundraka VAsudeva pretended himself as Real
VAsudeva by burning his chest to have Srivatsa. Hence Jeeva cannot become god and is always
dependent on the almighty at all time.
kaousthubha: A precious jewel worn by sri Vishnu.
mOksha dAyaka: He is the giver of mOksha to the jeevAs. One can get Liberated only through his
grace and enjoy the eternal bliss. While doing sAdhana also he is the one who creates such an
atmosphere for the jeeva to do his sAdhana for the respective destinations according to YOgyatha.
Sathvika Jeeva will get liberated, Rajsik will be in the state of NithyasamsAra, ThAmasic will go to
Eternal hell.
kutiladAnavashiksha: Sri Krishna says -
“ YadA YadAhi Dharmasya glanirbhavathi BhAratha
AbhyuthAnamadharmsya tadAtmAnam srujAmyaham //
His main purpose of taking avathara on this earth is to punish the evil and to reduce the weight on
the earth. When it becomes impossible for the earth to hold wicked demons, she prays god . Then
he takes various forms like Narahari, parashurAma, Ramachandra, Krishna, Kalki etc. for
BhoobhAra harana. He finally establishes dharma on the earth.
kumudAksha: VAsudeva is having beautiful eyes like lotus which are very attractive. He gives the
beauty for everything hence he is beyond the beauty.
Pakshi vAhana: Sriman NArAyana moves around with his vehicle, which is a bird. Garuda dEvaru
is very great who carrys him. As Sri madAnanada thirtharu says in Dwadasha stotra, the gods
below the rank of Garuda can not imagine the power of Garuda. He sees god’s image in his toe
while carrying him on his back and obtains pleasure. His position is due to the grace of Sri Hari.
Sri Jaganathadasaru in Harikathamruthasara beautifully narrates this as-
Jagadudarana surOthamana nija
pegalolAnthu karAbjadOl pada
yuga dharisi nakhapangthiyolu ramanIyataravAda /
nagadharana prathibimba kAnuta
mige harushado pogali higguva
KhagakulAdhipa kodali mangala sakala sujanarige //

dEva sankula paksha: NArAyana associates with DEvas. He does this because they are sathvik. He
protects them. He was with them at the time of Amrutha mathana . He has no bias among the jeevas
(Vaishamya dosha rahita). DEvathas always do their actions to please him and expect nothing in
return, which is the inherent good nature of a sAthvik jeeva.
nigamAdyaksha:
i) Lord Sri Hari is the supreme head of this universe.
There is none equal to or above him. Brahma and Rudra do there duties as per his orders and
they are not independent. Here Sri Hari Sarvottamatva is mentioned clearly.
ii) He is the main essence of vEdas. He vEdavEdya.

varanitilAkshasakha: He is dear to Shiva. Shiva seeks refuge in sri Vishnu at all times and
especially during crisis like in the incidence of BhasmAsura. Vishnu protected him. Shiva
always recites RAma nAma and explains its importance to Parvathi.
sarvEsha: He is the ruler of everything in this universe.
‘ThEnavina thrunamapi na chalathi’ - without him nothing will work in the whole world.
Rakshisu nammananavaratha: O lord protect us always.

Demons like MAricha and subhAhu were annoying the rishis and distrupting the yagna. Lord Rama

auspicious and holy figure. It is impossible for a jeeva to possess his infinite aprAkrta qualities. .
DhAtrijAntaka: DhAtrija is NarakAsura, He was born to BhoomAthe by Varaha roopa of Sri Hari.
Krishna killed NarakAsura when the later kept 16100 princess in confinement. This is the mark of
Deepavali or Naraka chaturdashi. Krishna freed the princess and married all of them as they had
perfomed Thapas for becoming his wives.
KapatanAtaka sUtra: The actions of Sri Hari is beyond one’s imagination. He does each and every
act tactfully. In KrishnAvathara he dealt with the situations in his own unquestionable way.
Phalguna mitra: Krishna helped Arjuna in each and every action as a friend. He treated Pandavas as
his body and soul-“ Mama prAnAhi PAndava”. He safeguarded Arjuna many times. In
MahAbhAratha Yudha he became SArathi and he rared horses.
vAkya vichitra: All words and letters primarily refers to god and praise him. In MukyArtha they
refer to Sri Hari and it is in the secondary context which refers to any particular thing etc...

Sri Krishna held diplomatic talks with Kauravas in getting back the kingdom for the Pandavas .
Krishna himself took the principal role in Mahabharatha yudha for placing Pandavas on the throne.
He preached Bhagavadgita to Arjuna when the latter turned back from the battle field. Sri Krishna
was with pAndavAs through out the Yudha and by his grace they won the battle and obtained their
kingdom. By doing these favours to Pandavas he expressed his affection towards them.
YOga gamya: Sri Hari is approchable through dhyana or Bhakthi. Bhakthi is nothing but
uninterrupted flow of love towards him . This helps jeeva in knowing him better gradually.
Aparoksha gnanis see him in each and every thing. Deep concentration in Sri Hari is the way to get
him.
BhavAbdi vishadhara nAgagAruda mantra vidha: Jeevas are experiencing great hardship in the
ocean of samsAra and trying to escape from there. Sri Hari knows the Garuda manthra and save us
from the poisonous snakes of the ocean. Hence his NAmasmarane is the last resort for the jeevas
for their liberation.
sri Purandara dasaru says - “Indiresha ninna nAama vonde kAyuvudakke”
BhavarOga vaidya: Sri Hari is like doctor for the jeevas who are suffering from the sickness of the

cycle of births and deaths.

Sri Hari Sarvottama Sri vayu Jeevottama

Respected Hari Bhaktas,

16th and 17th padhyas of Haribhakthi sAra of sri kanaka dAsaru. Readers must note that this is a
kavya and must be read meticulously to get correct Meaning . Words seems to be split.
Basically, this composition by dAsaru seems to be in the form of a letter. Till 15th padhya, sri
dAsaru addressed sri Hari. From 16th padhya onwards, Sri dAsaru goes on to compose the body of
the letter. The rearranged form of padhya is given for reading convinience.

Meaning: The one praised by the Cheerful Devathas , O Sri Ramachandra I bow to you with
devotion and earnestly communicate to you that we are all safe till now in this world ! Please
protect us by conveying us your safe message.
Notes: Till the last padya Sri kananka dasaru was addressing Sri Hari before starting the letter
which he is writting to him. This shows the friendly relationship between a bhaktha and
Paramathma. In this padya he is doing the Kushala preshne by continuing his letter to Sri Hari.

How great are the people who have dedicated themselves in the services of devotees of Sri Hari.
There is no use for us from the people those who do not know to worship you, who worship with
desire for worldly pleasures and not for moksha . O Lord protect us for ever.
Notes:
Here kanakadasaru has pointed out the importance of devotion towards Haribhakthas and their
service. In Bhagavatha Sarodhara of Vishnu theertharu he writes the 32 steps for Moksha in which
he describes how one should have the good attitude towards Hari bhakthas. MahatsamAgama i.e.
the meeting of great bhakthas and the behaviour of those great people very elaborately.
It is mere waste of time by joining the group who do not worship Sri Hari or Worship him wrongly
or worship him desiring vishaya sukha. One should join the Hari bhakthas which helps him in
enhance his bhakthi towards god.

Notes:
In this poem dasaru has shown that one should praise the sajjana and must not boost of the self.
This has been explained by sri Vishnutheertharu in Bhagavatha sarodhara in Mahanninda
PrakaraNa and Atmaprashamsa varjana Prakarana. One should not critisize sajjana, as critisizing
amounts to killing that person and he may get brahmahatya dhosha by doing so. Atma prashamsa
(self boosting ) is critisized. By praising oneself he is killing himself.

The source of right knowledge is apourushEya Vedas and the pourushEya Agama Brahmasutras
written by Vedavyasa. To know the right Meaning of the 18 puranas with their inner Meaning s one
needs to study under a guru in the prescribed manner. This procedure is only for a Brahmin. Hence
for those who do not have access to vedas and puranas should see god through bhakthi marga for
liberation. Kanakadasaru born as antyaja cannot do shastrAbhyasa. He knows this fact, he being the
Yamamshasambhootha. He upholds the words of krishna about the need for right knowledge “Nahi
gnAnEna Sadrusham”, and about the bhakthi mArga.
Tharka itself is not enough to obtain moksha. For tavtva nishchaya, Tharka, vyAkarna etc. are very
much essential.

Notes:
Brahma and Rudra give boons to the foes and they do not know to prevent them when they turn
hostile against them and to the other gods.
For instance: In the case of Brahma devaru he gave boon to Hiranyakashipu that the later should
not be killed by anyone. When the later started troubling everybody, Brahma became helpless. Sri
Hari then came as Narasimha to kill the Daitya and protected Prahlada.
In the case of Rudra, he gave boon to Bhasmasura and inturn it became life threatening for Shiva.
When Rudra pleaded Sri Hari, he cleverly killed the asura by making the to burn himself. There are
so many instances like this in puranas. By this, one can understand the supremacy of Sri Hari.

Draupati with his grace when Dushyasana was pulling her saree. Sri Krishna killed Putana who fed
her milk to kill him, to show “YadbhAvAtadbhavati”. He sees the intention of the person. She
intended to kill him and inturn she was killed by him. Sri Rama with his foot transformed Ahalya
into a woman who had become rock by the curse of sage Gautama. When shiva was unable to kill
the tripurAsuras, because of their chaste wives, the defectless Sri Hari took buddhAvatara, spoiled
their chastity and helped shiva in killing those asurAs.

Hiranyakashipu. He killed demon who came in form of Cart to kill him. He killed his uncle demon
Kamsa for his bad deeds. He made BheemasEna kill JarAsandha (MAgada - king of magada). Sri

Notes:
In this padya Sri Hari’s two of the important gunas are sketched.
One is bhaktha vAtsalya and the other possession of supreme power. In kurukshetra (battle field of
Mahabharatha war ), Arjuna was only a nimitta kArana. It was Sri Krishna who killed the entire
army of enemies.
Once Arjuna learnt that Jayadhrata was one among those responsible for Abhimanyu’s death, in a
fist of anger, he took a vow that he would kill Saidhava before sunset else he would end his life by
entering fire. Kauravas managed to hide Saidhava from the eyes of Arjuna. When he could not find
him till the last moment, padavas were worried. At this time of crisis, Sri Krishna showed his
supreme power by covering the Sun with his Sudarshana Chakra. The Kauravas thought it was a
sunset and overjoyed Saindhava came before Arjuna. As there was only few moments for sunset
Krishna removed chakra and ordered Arjuna to kill saindhava.
Saindhava’s father with affection towards his son did penance and got the boon from shiva that one
who drops his son’s head on the ground will loose one’s head. Krishna who knew this directed
Arjuna to divert Saindhava’s head to drop in his father’s hands. Bewildered by this, Saidhava’s
father immediately dropped it on the ground. According to the boon he also lost his head.
Who can do such kind of miracles other than Sri Krishna?. No one can understand his actions.

Notes:
One gets sadgati only if god is pleased and blesses him. If god helps us in performing our actions
we feel it easy and if not small actions become as big as lifting a mountain. Hence for a jeeva, grace
of Sri Hari is the most important element in life. One should constantly think Sri Hari in every
action:
“Sri Hari prEraneya - Sri Hari prityartham.”
Here a phrase has been mentioned i.e. “ Bhramara kIta nyaya” which has to be correctly
understood. The creeper or bee brings in some fly and rears it in its nest and it will fly around that
insect by making sound. After some days the ordinary fly becomes a creeper. This example has
been misinterpreted as - by constant meditation or thinking one with god jeeva will become god.
Even though the insect becomes the creeper, it is not the same which transformed it into bhramara.
There always exists the difference. Jeeva can never become god. They are entirely different from
each other.

Notes:
Here importance of HarinAma smarane has been stressed again with the example of Ajamila.
Ajamila was a pious Brahmin. Unfortunately as a result of bad deeds he commited grave sin. He
uttered his son’s name Narayana when the yama dhootas came to take him away.
Sponteneously, he got the rememberance of god. Sri Hari protected him from the clutches of
yamadhootas. Ajamila got Sri HarisMarane name because of his sadhana in the early part of life
and also during his previous janmas. This reflects the tatva of Dwadasha sthotra of Srimadanda
tIrtharu -“Santatam chintaye anantam antyakAle visheshataha.”

and was also disgraceful to his father-in-law who is Daksha as he was deeply interested in Rohini
and neglected Ashwini and his other wives. Sri Hari karunya guna is highlighted in a adverse way.
He will pardon the grave mistakes commited by his devotees.

As long you Sri Hari, dwells in this body as relative, everyone will respect. But when you leave this

Notes:
Everyone will have eight length (Measured from tip of thumb to tip of middle finger) body
measured in there fingers. Kanakadasaru has given this mathematical calculation of the body
length. He also gives count of body hairs and bone/joints. Sri Jagannatha dasaru in his
Harikathamrutasara deals in detail with the body, its parts and the forms of Sri Hari in those parts.
The soul will be in this body till Sri Hari is present. When Sri Hari goes out of this body it is just a
corpus. In madhwanama Sri sripadarajaru says “ parama mukhyaprana tholagalA dEhavanu aritu
peNanendu pELvaru bhuda jana “ When Vayu comes out of this body the body becomes corpus.
As Sri Hari is the controller of Vayu when he goes out there is nothing in this body.

Since Sri kanaka dasaru was born in the shudra janma , he is prohibited from bath ( like a brahmin

The anger which exists in one’s self is due to one’s respective sins. It is evident from the Shastras
that the sinners cannot escape from sufferings in the hell arising out of such sins. Yama won’t let go
the sinners without punishment, but it’s not wrong on part of Yama for doing so. Hence protect me
by removing anger from me.

You are the Puppeteer of all animate and inanimates entities of this universe and they act as per
your directions (wishes). If those directions turns hostile, all our wishes go haywire. There is no
freedom for us. I am submitting both of my right and wrong deeds to you. Please protect always.
Notes:
Every thing is under control of Sri Hari. He is inner controller and inner spirit. The universe is like
a puppets game for him. Only thing left to us is total submission of our good and bad deeds to Sri
Hari.

I have become wicked without worshipping you, knowingly that you are my Lord. At each step, my
mind is struck in the fantacy of wife and children. But when verified with wisdom, who are these
wife and children ? You are the ruler of this body and soul, O Lord, please protect us by holding our
hands with affection for ever.
Notes:
One should engage more in the activities which helps in the elevation of one’s soul, rather than
involving too much in wife and children, as they may not help him in attaining the final goal.
Gaining the knowledge of Sri Hari should be the ultimate goal in one’s life without getting highly
involved in the mundane activities.

Meaning:
O Lord, the enemies called kama, krodha etc.. are troubling me and are like thorns which are
hurdles on my way. O lord, the eliminator of sins please save me. Am I not your servant ? Are you
not the kinsman of the helpless ? Is there a place for unkindness in you ? Please protect us for ever
with Kindness.

Notes:
The 6 enemies ( arishadvarga ) will trouble almost everyone with few exceptions. This can only be
tackled through constant practice to get away from them. For this, the grace of Sri Hari is very
much required.
This has been narrated in one devaranama as -
“ kandare bAradu kalitare bAradu /
ninna dayavAgo thanaka //”

Before getting the grace of Sri Hari one should please vayu devaru to get rid of the enemies -
“ Aru mandi vairigaLanu sEralIsadante nUki /

Meaning:
O god, It seems that there is no one in this world who could escape from the tortures of Yama (with
few exceptions). So, death is certain for everyone. Rudra is wandering in the Rudrabhoomi by
cutting one of the heads of Brahma. O Almighty, I have surrendered myself to you, please save me
from the fear of yama and protect for ever.
Notes:
Here Sri kanakadasaru has explained the sarvottamatva of Sri Hari. Everyone who is born must die
as “JAtasya maraNamdhruvam”. In real sense there is no point in depending oneself on another
who is also bound to die. Hence one has to depend on one who is above this to escape from the
clutches of death. Then comes the question who is the one doesn’t die or immortal. It is none other
than Narayana, the lord of universe. If one takes shelter in him he will protect from the sorrow of
death and grant liberation. Brahma and Rudra are not supreme gods and are not capable to grant
moksha independently. They totally depending on sri Hari.
Haribhakthi Sara Padhya - 73 & 74

Sri hari Sarvottama Sri Vayu Jeevottama

Respected VaishnavAs,

We are presenting the 73rd and 74th padhyAs of Sri Haribhakthi sAra of Sri Kanaka dAsaru.

muktige - bhaktiyE - kAraNavu - rakshisu - nammanu - anavarata.
Meaning:
Shakti (power), prakriti (nature), mAya (illusion) are not true. O the granter of mukti, when you are
in this body can these shakti or maya give us the happiness and sorrow? If we logically think about
this, one who mentally detaches himself from these happiness and sorrow and praises you with
devotion will certainly be liberated. Hence sincere devotion towards lord is the root for liberation.
Please protect us always.
Notes:
The only solution to please the almighty is pure, sincere and immense devotion. For all sadhanas,
bhakthi is the main element. In other words, maya, shakthi etc. will not render liberation. Since
Laxmi is the abhimani devata for prakrithi and she is the shakthi swaroopa, this padhya seems to
indicate that even sri Laxmi cannot grant liberation independently and it is only sri Hari’s grace
which can obtain liberation.

shaynadi - sEridava - nInu - Ega - rakshisu - nammanu - anavarata.
Meaning:
The three characters satva, rajas and tamas were induces by three icons viz., Brahma, Hari and
Rudra by whom respectively the evolution , maintenance and destruction (srushti, sthiti, laya ) are
carried out. The main cause for all the three is you. All the three forms will unite in you during the
pralaya (final destruction), during which you will be glittering laying on the peepul leaf. O lord
protect us for ever.
Notes:
It is a general practice to say that the activities of this universe viz., srushti, sthiti, laya are carried
out by Brahma, vishnu and Maheshwara respectively. But if it is seen properly though the
scriptures, all these are carried out by Sri Vishnu. Sri Hari does the act of evolution staying in
Brahma and does the act of destruction dwelling in Rudra and maintains the world himself. This is
the real truth. The icon of the almighty during praLaya is his original form.
Brahma and Rudra will then be in his belly. Hence he is the supreme god whom we have to
surrender. This has been well said by Sri Purandara dasaru -
Srushti sthiti laya kAraNa Govinda /
