KHNP – KOEMA Trade Mission
T
he Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co
Ltd (KHNP) together with the Korea
Electrical Manufacturers Association
(KOEMA) organised an 18-member trade
mission to Malaysia from 24th to 27th June
2007. The mission was led by KHNP Senior
Manager, Mr Kim Jung-Tae. Accompanying
them was KOEMA Director, Mr Park Byung-
Il. The mission aimed to gain further insight
into the Malaysian energy market and to meet
Malaysian companies for possible business
ventures.
Korean Companies
Participating Korean companies are
suppliers to KHNP. They are Boltcap21 Co
Ltd, Bumsuk Engrg Co Ltd, CSTC Co Ltd,
DK Tech Corporation, Duon System Co Ltd,
PSD Tech Inc, Samkwang Air Tech
Corporation, Seojin Instech Co Ltd, SE
Woon T&S Co Ltd, TGE Co Ltd and
Vitzrotech Co Ltd. Products profile includes
electrical components, equipment and
instrumentation.
KHNP is the biggest electric power company
in Korea which owns 29% of generation
facilities and supply 40% of electricity use.
It operates four nuclear power sites and nine
hydro power plants.
Visits to TNB Offices
The Korean trade mission paid courtesy
visits to TNB offices on 25th June 2007. At
the TNB Generation, they were received by
TNB Vice President (Generation), Dato’
Abdul Razak Majid. The mission was
briefed on the operation of the generation
division.

Some 50 meetings were held at the Kuala
Lumpur Convention Centre. Overall the
meetings were fruitful.
Farewell Dinner
The Korean trade mission hosted a farewell
cum appreciation dinner on the evening of
26th June 2007 at the Spring Garden
Chinese Restaurant, Kuala Lumpur City

Centre. It was a good networking dinner
between the mission members with TEEAM.
They thanked TEEAM for helping with all
the meeting arrangements.
Friendly Golf
Before the Korean trade mission departs, they
had a round of golf with some TEEAM
members at Tropicana Golf & Country Club.
It was a marvelous experience for them to test
the Malaysian green.

Council Meeting in Johor Bahru
T
he first TEEAM Council Meeting for
the new term 2007-2009 was held in
Johor Bahru on 16th June 2007 for the
first time. The meeting was hosted by Johor
Bahru Electrical & Electronics Association
(JBEEA). A 30-member delegation
comprising Council Members, spouses and
Secretariat staff chartered a coach to Johor
Bahru on 15th June 2007. Some drove down
on their own. Representatives from the Perak
Electrical Association (PEA) and Sarawak
Electrical Association (SEA) also joined the
meeting.
In the afternoon of 15th June 2007,
JBEEA members accompanied the
TEEAM golfers for a friendly golf game
at Starhill Golf & Country Club. Those
who did not play golf explored the Johor
Bahru city. Some took the opportunity
to cross over to Singapore for a half-day
trip!

MTA & Metaltech 2007

TA Malaysia 2007 was staged for the second
consecutive year with Metaltech 2007. The exhibitions
were held from 16th to 20th May 2007 at Putra World
Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur. They were organised by Malaysian
Exhibition Services Sdn Bhd and Trade-Link Exhibition Services
Sdn Bhd. The exhibitions covered metal working, machine tools,
CAD/CAM, metrology, mould & die, surface & heat treatment,
sub-contracting, foundry, industrial automation, robotic and
precision & welding engineering. YB Dato’ Seri Rafidah
Aziz, Minister of International Trade and Industry officiated
the opening ceremony.
There was a participation of 1,318 exhibiting companies from
33 countries. TEEAM also showed presence as an exhibitor.

Berhad (TNB) organised a seminar
on the second edition of the TNB

Ritz Carlton Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. Some 80
participants attended the seminar. It was
aimed to provide a platform to electrical
contractors to exchange views with TNB.

Talk on Fire Safety Awareness

n 28th March 2007, some ten
members of TEEAM and Secretariat
staff attended a fire safety awareness
talk held at TEEAM Conference Room. The
talk was aimed to create public awareness on
fire prevention and safety, and to learn how
to respond if there is a fire. Three volunteered
speakers presented a 1-hour talk on common
fire dangers and techniques to reduce the risks
of death and injury in the event of a fire.
Participants were given useful safety tips.
The speakers also highlighted the following
different categories of fires:
• A class fire - normal fire (solid materials,
wood, paper, plastic, textiles, etc)
• B class fire - oily fire (fires involving
flammable liquids, petrol, diesel, solvents
etc)
• C class fire - gas/electrical fire
• D class fire - metal fire (source of fire is
normally of chemical material and it is
about 1,800oC)
There are three types of fire extinguishers in
the market. Their following features are

• Dry powder – It can put off A, B & C class and easy to operate. It is environmentally

useful information on fire safety.
Some Safety Tips During Fire
• Test door for heat before opening
When you open doors leading to the fire area, you will be exposing
yourself to the dangerous products of combustion that is heat,
smoke, gases and flames. If you are trapped in your room, never
open your door before testing it for heat. What you need to do is to
feel the knob of your door by using the back portion of your hand.
If it feels hot, you need to find an alternative escape route. However,
if the door does not feel hot, kneel down with your shoulders bracing
against the door while opening it cautiously. The reason for this
action is to protect you from the flames and smoke that usually
occupy the upper spaces in your home during a fire. If heat and
smoke are seen entering, shut the door immediately and stuff items
like towels, bed or blankets under your door as to prevent smoke
and heat from entering.
• Escaping through the window
If your main escape route is blocked by fire or smoke, your
alternative escape is by using the window. Before opening the
window, be certain that the door is shut. Likewise if you are trapped
on the first door, try escaping by dropping yourself down as safely
as possible by using the window.
The correct procedure in doing this is to let your legs out of the
window first, then by clinging to the ledge of the window, lower
your body to the full extent of your arms as to reduce the height of
your drop and finally drop yourself down. In addition, children
can also be handed down, with the condition that there are people
to receive them on the ground floor.
• What should be done if trapped
If you are trapped on the second floor, you should not try to escape
by dropping yourself from the window because the height of the
window may cause serious injuries. Look for alternative means
like stairways, verandas, trees, garage or as a last resort wait for
the fire brigade to rescue you.
If you have a telephone, or handphone in your room, call the fire
brigade (i.e. 994) or your nearest neighbour for assistance. Inform
them exactly where your location is. Be in a postion where rescuers
can clearly see you, catch their attention by flashing a torch light,
wave a white cloth or just shout for help.

• If you are trapped in smoke
When fire occurs, buoyant hot air and smoke are generated and
rise into the atmosphere, while deadly gases sink. If your main
escape route is smoke logged, and if there are no althernative
escape routes, you have no choice but to use the main route for
escaping. Under smoke logged condition, it is important for
you to crawl by placing your head within the “safety zone” which
is between 30 to 60 centimeters above ground level where oxygen
supply may be found.
• If your clothes catch fire
If your clothes catch fire, you should use the “Stop, Drop, Roll
Method”, that is to stay still, do not run because this will only fan
the flames, next drop yourself to the ground, cover your face with
both of your hands then roll until the flames are extinguished. The
stop, drop and roll method has saved thousands of lives in the world
and that is why you should teach your children this method. Next
time, if you see someone’s clothes on fire, you can help them by
using this method, or by using a wet gunny sack or blanket to
extinguish the fire.
• First aid
For first degree and second degree burns, do not apply ice water
but run cool water over the burned area for 10-15 minutes. This
reduces pain and smarting while preventing further tissue damage.
For third degree burns, cover the burns with non fluffy cloth. Wait
for medical assistance. Lie victim down but do not remove clothing
which may be attached to the burned skin. The various degrees of
burns are:
First degree burns
Burns that only affect outer layer of the skin.
Second degree burns
Serious blistered skin that requires immediate medical treatment
from experts.
Third degree burns
More serious burns which involves internal tissues and requires
emergency treatment from medical experts.
