AXLES INDIA ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION AHS 003 - GENERAL METALLURGICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR STEEL EFORGINGS L0 SCOPE 2.0 30 This specification covers the general metallurgical requirements of steel forgings ‘to be supplied to Axles India Ltd (Other than spindle forgings). This specification defines ‘ietallurgical, testing and reporting requirements of forging vendors. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 21 22 23 24 25 26 Forging vendors shall be responsible for the entire metallurgical quality of raw ‘material and forgings, whether the steel is purchased directly by them’ or through Axles India Led, They shall have a metallurgical control plan in controlling the material quality and to ‘ensure compliance with the requirements ofthis specification, ‘The material shall be of good quality ingot/continuous cast route killed steel made by either basic oxygen or electri furnace practice and from a reputed steel mill, Forging ‘vendor is generally responsible for the quality of steel. Axles India’s prior approval is required in the case of concast sources. .A minimum eross sectional reduction of 7:1 shall be needed to obtain required properties, in the case of continuous cast steel. Approved steel source with concast reduction size shall be obtained from AIL Purchase. ‘The steel shall be fully killed with aluminum to develop fine austenitic grains (size'5 0 8).The minimum total aluminum content shall be 0.02%. ‘The forging drawing will specify the required steel grade and any pormissible alternatives, ‘The forgings shall be free from cracks, forging laps, under-fitings embedded scales, surface depressions, excessive scales, and decarburization kinked or improper grain flow and indication of ovetheating. Forger shall take necessary precaution/control hile ordering raw material of steel, CHEMICAL COMPOSITION ~ 34 Many grades of steel are used for forged axle components. Forging vendor shall analyze each heat of matetial to determine the conformance of the chemical Nb 8 REV: 008 DATE: 17/10/2016 REVISWED APPROVED Page 1 of 5 32 33 34 35 AXLES INDIA ENGINEERING SPECIFICATION AHS 003 - GENERAL METALLURGICAL YUIREM] yR STEEL FORGINGS ‘composition to the requirements defined for the specified grade used in axle housing product. ‘The composition of typical grades used in axle housing product shall conform to the grade requirements stated in Table-1. For grades not covered under this specification, the appropriate standard of latest issue shall be referred. The chemistry specified are ‘based on product analysis For better machinability the minimum sulphur level to be maintained at 0.015%. The following maximum residual (unintentional) element levels shall be allowed in Carbon & Alloy Grades. Cr - 0.20%, Ni - 0.3 0%, Mo - 0.08%, Cu~0. 35 %, V - 0.02 %, $n -0.05 %. B-0.0008% (Ref Point no.3.5) ‘The material shall be suitable for welding. For weldability requirements, the carbon ‘equivalent (CE) shall be 0.45 max. when calculated using the following formula: CE=C+ Mnl6 +(Cr+Mo+ VYSt (Ni+ Cuy/15 4.0 INTERNAL CLEANLINESS AND GRAIN SIZE ‘The maximum allowable nonmetallic inclusion rating shall be as follows (as per ASTM E 45 / 1S 4163).
