Team ready for another successful season

The 2018 season was one of the
most memorable in recent history
for the Unicoi County High School
football program. In addition to fin-
ishing with a 9-3 record, the Blue
Devils also hosted and won the
school's first playoff game in de-
cades before being eliminated from
the postseason by eventual state
champion Alcoa.
"I think the high point of last
year was winning the home playoff
game," head coach Drew Rice re-
cently told The Erwin Record. "We
hadn't hosted a playoff game since
1991 and hadn't won one since 1985.
So to have that sort of historical rel-
evance, and it be at home in front of
our fans was really special. Finally
getting over the five win mark like
we had been at for the previous
three years was huge too; it was a
special year for a lot of people."
With the 2019 season upon them,
the question now is, can the Blue
Devils repeat – or even top – the
success of last season? To do that,
coaches and players will have to
take the season one game at a time,
according to Rice.
"It's such a long season, and it's
such a physical and mental grind
for both our guys and our coach-
es ... ," Rice said. "We have always
talked about going 1-0 each and
every week, but last year was defi-
nitely a product of that mindset. I
hope our guys truly learned how to
win. We had tasted success in the
couple years prior, but it was nev-
er sustained success. So my hope is
that our guys saw and learned what
it takes to be successful through-
out the course of an entire season.
We had tremendous leadership last
year from our seniors, so I hope this
year's seniors can model that same
type of mentality and approach."
With 56 players on the roster, in-
cluding 31 upperclassmen, Rice has
high expectations for the 2019 sea-
son.
"We have four goals every year
– have a winning season, win the
region, host a playoff game and ad-
vance in the playoffs," Rice said.
"Last year we accomplished three
of those four. In order to do that,
we have to go 1-0 each and every
week. So ultimately we think we
can be competitive for the top of
our league, but we have to do a lot of
proving between now and the end
of the season. Last year's accom-
plishments, mean absolutely noth-
ing when we kick off the season."
With that many upperclassmen
on the team, the Blue Devils bring
an experienced and athletic lineup
to the field.
"I think our greatest strength is
our depth," Rice said. "We have 31
upperclassmen and it has really
shown in these scrimmages when
we put in our second group of guys
and there's really not much of a
drop-off. So hopefully, throughout
the course of the season that will
prove to be a real weapon for us.
I also think our team speed is ex-
ceptional for a school our size. In
our summer testing in June, we had
24 guys under a 5 second 40-yard-
dash."
Aiding the Blue Devils in their
quest for a region title and playoff
success will be several familiar fac-
es to UCHS fans, including senior
running back Kody Lewis. Lewis
carried the ball 194 times for 2,025
yards and 24 touchdowns – all
without a single fumble – during
the 2018 season. His efforts earned
him all-state honors from the Ten-
nessee Football Coaches Associa-
tion.
"He is a preseason all-state selec-
tion this year and will be the feature
back," Rice said. "He has next-level
speed and we are excited for him."
Running the offense will be ju-
nior quarterback Brock Thomp-
son, who threw for just over 100
yards a game and 15 touchdowns
last season.
"He has been starting since the
third game of his freshman year, so
we have all the confidence in the
world in his ability," Rice said. "He
has really grown and matured as an
athlete and a quarterback."
Junior Robbie O'Dell will be the
backup quarterback this season.
"Robbie has really had a great
summer," Rice said. "He is a great
athlete who can do a lot of different
things for us."
Senior Diego Diaz will also get a
lot of touches this season.
"He has really had a great offsea-
son and he runs extremely hard,"
Rice said.
On the outside, wideouts Peyton
Whitson, Tanner VanHoy, Evan
Huff, Tracy Vanover and Jordan
Bridges all bring athleticism to the
field.
"They all can make plays for us,"
Rice said.
L.J. Mitchell and Isaiah Smith will
play H-back this season.
"Their position is absolutely criti-
cal to our offense," Rice said.
The offensive line is anchored by
the experienced senior trio of Roby
Lemmon, Michael Harrington and
Nick Farnor.
"All three of them have started
since they were sophomores on the
offensive line," Rice said. "Dakoda
Bell and Rodrigo Castellon will play
our guard spots and Caleb Swine-
hart will be a very valuable backup
for us."
In addition to the experience,
there are several youngsters who
are ready to make a name for them-
selves on the gridiron this season.
"We have some tremendous
young talent like Bryson Peterson,
Lucas Slagle, Nehemiah Edwards,
Esteban Mendoza and Caleb Pe-
laez," Rice said. "All those guys are
going to have very bright futures in
our program."
Players to watch on defense in-
clude Mitchell and senior Zhante
Breedlove. Rice said they will be
the defensive anchor at their defen-
sive end positions.
"On the interior defensive line,
Rodrigo Castellon, Nick Farnor,
Michael Harrington and Ethan
Fuller will all play meaningful
snaps," Rice said. "Our lineback-
ers are senior heavy with Roby
Lemmon and Lane Garland on the
interior. Both have played a lot of
football for us, and are very com-
mitted to our program. Isaiah Smith
is an extremely talented sophomore
who will play all three linebacker
spots for us; he is going to be a name
people hear a lot over the next three
years.
"Preston Woodby and Diego
Diaz will hold down the outside
linebacker spot for us, and provide
speed and athleticism for us on the
edge. In our secondary, Kody Lew-
is, Jacob Schreck and Robbie O'Dell
will all split time between the two
safety spots. At corner Tanner Van-
Hoy and Matthew Sellars will start.
Tracy Vanover will provide valu-
able depth there for us as well."
In addition to Rice, the 2019
Blue Devil coaching staff includes
Malcolm Foreman, Jason Hensley,
Brandon Adams, Jordan Cooper,
Mark Peterson, Eric Tilson, Trevor
Berry and Austin Hensley.
A successful 2019 campaign will
depend on how well the Blue Dev-
ils do the little things, according to
their head coach.
"We have to take care of the foot-
ball on offense and we have to tack-
le well defensively," Rice said. "If
we do those two things night in and
night out, we can have a tremen-
dous season."
The Blue Devils will once again
play Region 1-AAA with Chuck-
ey-Doak, Claiborne, Johnson Coun-
ty, North Greene and West Greene.
"We think we are going to be in the
mix," Rice said of the race to the re-
gion title. "We have to stay healthy,
and we have to control what we can
control. If we take care of business
each and every week, we will have
a chance at a championship come
November."
The Blue Devils open the 2019
season at South Greene in non-
league play on Friday, Aug. 23.
Their first home game will be Fri-
day, Aug. 30, against Hampton. The
first region game will be played on
the road at North Greene on Sept. 6.
Kickoff for each game is set for 7:30
p.m.
"We would just like to encourage
everyone to come support these
young men," Rice said. "It's an ex-
citing time for football in Unicoi
County. They have committed to
something that is much bigger than
themselves, and because of that, I
hope the community will come out
and support them. There are cur-
rently 110 young men in grades 6-12
who are playing football in Unicoi
County right now between the high
school and the middle school pro-
grams. We want to build long term
success in Unicoi County."
Season tickets and parking pass-
es are still on sale in the main office
of UCHS for $30 each.

New coach takes over Lady Devil program

The Unicoi County High School
Lady Devil volleyball team had a
very competitive year in 2018. The
team finished the season 4-8 in
conference and 7-16 overall.
That record was good enough
to finish middle of the pack in con-
ference. They played well against
some big-time opponents last sea-
son, taking two games off an ex-
tremely tough opponent in Eliza-
bethton.
Now it’s time for the 2019 season
and the Lady Devils have a brand-
new captain of the ship. Shelley
Swinehart comes to Erwin to lead
the team after several years off as
a head coach of a volleyball pro-
gram.
Swinehart is a 1992 graduate
from Gallatin High School in Gall-
atin, Tennessee. While in high
school, she had a great career as
a player, lettering on varsity for
three years.
After high school, Swinehart
attended Lipscomb University as
regular undergrad student. There
wasn’t a volleyball program her
freshman year; however, they in-
troduced volleyball heading into
her sophomore year.
The university held open try-
outs, and Swinehart earned a spot
with the program in its inaugural
season. Swinehart was a solid con-
tributor as a player for Lipscomb in
1993, 1994 and 1995. She went on
to graduate from Lipscomb in May
1997.
When asked about this year’s
team, Swinehart said, “What hap-
pened in the past isn’t what I’m
concerned with. Everyone has a
clean slate, and this is a brand-new
season.”
The Lady Devils have four play-
ers entering their final year. They
are Hallee Casey, Gabby Davis,
Kiley Bennett and Ashtan Vance.
Swinehart said she really likes her
seniors.
“Gabby Davis and Hallee Casey,
who are both seniors, are going to
be my two best defenders,” Swine-
hart said. “On the front row I have
a senior in Ashtan Vance, who is
going to be great for us. Kiley is a
great addition to the team She is
a hard worker and tough on de-
fense.”
Juniors on the roster are Natilee
Clouse and Dora Benton.
"We only have two juniors on the
roster, but they’re both great play-
ers," Swinehart said.
The program has 11 sophomores,
which includes Baleigh Hyder,
Bridget Michelsen, Mackenzie Ca-
sey, Emalee Benard, Hannah Shel-
ton, Alex Withers, Raquel Torres,
Amanda Miller, Caitlin Wilson, Sa-
vannah Sparks and Shelby Miller.
“It’s a really large group in one
class, but they are all so important
to our success,” Swinehart said.
Some of these younger players
will be expected to contribute at
the varsity level.
“I have a sophomore, Caitlin
Wilson, who should do big things
for us this year,” Swinehart said.
“But my biggest player is soph-
omore Shelby Miller. When you
watch her you will know what I’m
talking about. Shelby jumps off the
page when you see her play.”
There are also new faces joining
the program as ninth graders.
“We will have a JV and freshman
squad too,” Swinehart said. “We
have four freshman – Bella Davis,
Jala Chandley, Sydney Compton
and Olivia Bailey.”
The freshman team will play
matches throughout the year, but
will be joined by a few of the soph-
omores to fill out a team.
The new season could be a very
successful one for the UCHS vol-
leyball program, according to the
head coach.
“We have a roster with tremen-
dous togetherness,” Swinehart
said. “All of our players are pull-
ing for each other to succeed, and
that’s so important to a team’s suc-
cess. We believe we have a team
that’s going to compete at a high
level against every opponent we
face.”

The Lady Devil program is part
of a seven-team conference with
Sullivan South, Sullivan Central,
Sullivan East, Chuckey-Doak,
Johnson County and Elizabethton.
The conference schedule consists
of playing every team twice, once
home and once away.
The first match for the Lady
Devils is away at Providence Acad-
emy in a non-conference clash.
The first conference match of the
season was played at Chuckey-Do-
ak on Tuesday, Aug. 20. They are
scheduled to travel to Happy Val-
ley on Thursday, Aug. 22, with
matches beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The Lady Devils open up at
home against KACHEA (Kingsport
Area Christian Home Education
Association) on Monday, Aug. 26,
in a non-conference match. They
will travel to Elizabethton for a
conference match on Tuesday,
Aug. 27. Home conference play be-
gins on Thursday, Aug. 29, against
Sullivan Central.
On Saturday, Sept. 21, the varsi-
ty will compete at Science Hill in
Johnson City in another competi-
tion. The Science Hill Tournament
will have teams from outside the
region, as well as many of the local
programs.
The regular season ends on
Thursday, Oct. 3. Two days later
on Saturday, Oct. 5, the JV will play
their conference tournament at
Elizabethton.
The varsity will play their dis-
trict tournament starting on Mon-
day, Oct. 7, and ending on Thurs-
day, Oct. 10, at Sullivan Central
High School.

Ciralsky now in charge of girls’ team

A new coach has been given the
reins of the Unicoi County High
School Lady Devil soccer pro-
gram.
“I am excited to take over the
girls’ team,” head coach Justin Ci-
ralsky, who has led the Blue Dev-
il program since it began in 2016,
told The Erwin Record. “They
are a fun group who are eager to
learn, so we will see how the sea-
son goes.”
Ciralsky takes over from former
head coach Bettina Chirica who
stepped down after taking a posi-
tion in another school system.
“This preseason has been a
transition for sure,” Ciralsky said.
“(Bettina) left due to a new job so
that transition has been smooth.
The girls are training hard in
preparation for the upcoming sea-
son.”
Ciralsky takes over a team that
finished 2-13 overall last season.
He said the 2019 season will be a
learning experience for the squad.
“We will definitely be in a build-
ing year for the program,” he add-
ed. “We are still trying to lay the
foundation to build on for the year
and the years to come. Our expec-
tations are for each player to grow
individually, so that we can grow
as a team throughout the season.”
The 2019 Lady Devil team is a
mix of new faces and returning
players.
“We have a lot of new players
this year so we are still trying to
identify some of the key players,”
Ciralsky said. “One player who
has played exceptionally well is
Audrey Tipton and we are hoping
for a big season for her.”
Tipton is one of five seniors
on the team. Classmates Chelsea
Kinil, Gisele Llamas, Zayra An-
drade and Bernice Luquin will
also be looked to for leadership
this season.
The team has nine juniors –
Lana Deshner, Rachel Altemose,
Kaleigh Pate, Adilene Luquin, Va-
leria Ponce, Maria Cedillo, Lesh-
li Lopez, Iliana Martinez Lopez
and Brieanna Duncan.
Lacey Ashley is the only soph-
omore on the squad. Isaly Beau-
champ Perez, Rubi Lopez, Macy
Robinson and Myra Negrete are
freshmen.
As the season begins – and pro-
gresses – fundamentals will be a
focus for Ciralsky and his team.
“We are still a newer team
with a lack of experience, so we
are trying to build the skills and
knowledge to help make them
successful,” Ciralsky said.
An asset for the high school
program in the coming years, ac-
cording to the head coach, is the
start of a girls’ soccer program at
Unicoi County Middle School.
“We are super excited to see the
middle school program take off so
that can help be a building block
for the program,” Ciralsky said.

The Lady Devils will compete
in District 1-AA against Eliza-
bethton, Greeneville, Sullivan
Central, Sullivan South and Vol-
unteer.
“Our conference games are still
super important, but we have a
couple of games out of conference
with teams of similar skill and tal-
ent level that will be a good test
for us,” Ciralsky said.
The Lady Devils were sched-
uled to open the 2019 season on
Tuesday, Aug. 20, at Sullivan
South. While South is a league op-
ponent, this game will not count
in the conference standings.
On Thursday, Aug. 22, UCHS is
scheduled to host Daniel Boone
at the UCHS track beginning
at 6 p.m. They will play their
first league game at Greeneville
on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 6 p.m.
They are scheduled to host West
Greene on Thursday, Aug. 29, at
6:30 p.m.

Experienced runners return for Higgins

With weeks of preparation un-
der their belts, the runners of the
Unicoi County High School cross
country program are ready to
take on the 2019 season.
“We started running in mid-
June this year,” head coach Thad
Higgins said. “We took time this
summer to really focus on build-
ing into the season to make sure
we could avoid injuries.
“We were also intentional about
making sure that we were do-
ing more than just pounding the
pavement and took time to do sev-
eral swimming workouts as well.
I like to make sure we can mix
up the practices so that running
doesn’t get monotonous.”
For the first time in several
years, the Blue Devil program will
be able to compete as a team and
not just as individual runners.
“We have more guys than we’ve
had in the last couple years, so I’m
really excited to see how they’ll
push each other as a team,” Hig-
gins said. “You have to have at
least five guys to score as a team at
a race, so it’ll be good to see Uni-
coi ranking against other teams
this season.”
Returning for the 2019 season
for the Blue Devils are senior
Darren Soulier and junior Wyatt
Miller.
“They’ve already done a great
job of setting expectations high
for the newer runners,” Higgins
said.
“In the past, our team rivalry
was always between Darren and
John Campbell, who just graduat-
ed. I’m happy to say that I believe
we will have another exciting ri-
valry this season,” Higgins said.
“Wyatt really stepped up last
track season and began running
competitive 800-meter times. It’ll
be exciting to see if he can bring
that same skill set to cross coun-
try and challenge Darren in the
5K.
“As for Darren, he’s a senior
and has set the tone this summer
for the guys. He’s always several
strides in front of the pack and
is really pushing himself to get
ready for our first race.”
Junior Javier Castellon has
joined the Blue Devil team.
“Javier is very familiar with
sports and has been playing soc-
cer for Unicoi already. Javier be-
gan running XC to stay in shape
for soccer, but has since proven
that he’s a talented and dedicated
runner,” Higgins said. “I’m sure
we’ll continue to see him grow as
a runner and that will have pro-
found benefits in the spring when
he goes to soccer as well.”
Three freshmen – Tristan Dun-
can, Ivan Luquin and Canaan
Webb – have also joined the team.
“We have three freshmen this
year and it’s been a lot of fun get-
ting to know them,” Higgins said.
“I’ve spent the preseason just
getting them used to the team and
used to running, so it’s still a little
early to say anything about per-
formance.
“However, I will say that each
of these guys has made running a
priority and they’ve done a great
job of completing each workout to
the best of their ability.”
Returning to represent the
Lady Devils are senior Cheyenne
Wilson and sophomore Marissa
Soulier.
“On long runs Cheyenne and
Marissa have been pacing them-
selves with Darren as much as
they can,” Higgins said. “I think
that extra effort is going to pay off
throughout the season. Cheyenne
was able to make big strides on
her mile time at the end of track
season and I’ve seen her bring
that same determination into her
summer workouts. Marissa was
able to become more and more
competitive as the season went
on last year, so I’m excited to see
her pick up where she left off as
well.”

The first meet of the season for
Higgins and his runners is set the
Run for the Hills at South Holston
Dam on Saturday, Aug. 24, begin-
ning at 9 a.m. After that, the team
will compete in the Terry Hull
Crawford Cross Country Clas-
sic held at the Beacon School in
Greeneville on Thursday, Aug. 29.
As the season progresses, Hig-
gins hopes to see his runners im-
prove their times.
“Since we aren’t scored like a
traditional sport, we don’t get a
win-loss record or any kind of
weighted points. For this reason,
the only thing that matters is that
the athletes become better run-
ners at every single race,” Higgins
said. “At the end of the season we
will run our state qualifying race
at Daniel Boone High School, so
in terms of importance, that’s the
only race that really matters.”
The closest race for UCHS
will be the Fenders’ Cross Coun-
try Carnival at Fenders’ Farm in
Jonesborough on Sept. 14.
“If you’d like to come support
the team, make sure you mark
that one on your calendar,” Hig-
gins said.

Youthful team tees off for program

The new school year is here in
Unicoi County, and the 2019 Unicoi
County High School golf team is al-
ready in full swing.
Coach Gene Renfro, who is in the
beginning of his third year as the
coach of the Blue Devil program,
said he is so proud of his current
group of players and the dedica-
tion they have all shown leading
up to this season. Renfro does not
have a great deal of experience on
this team, but what they have in an
abundance is enthusiasm and effort.
“I can teach them things on the
golf course, but I cannot make them
give great effort, but they all do,”
Renfro said. “This team is extreme-
ly young but, I believe we have a
group that will blossom quickly
because they all have a desire to be
successful.”
The roster on the boys’ side is
made up of one junior and eight
freshman. Nicholas Bender is the
elder statesman on the boys’ side.
“Nicholas is entering his third
season and is being asked to be the
leader on the boys’ side,” Renfro
said. “He knows what is expected
from him and is helping guide the
less experienced players. Nicholas
does so many things well. He hits
the ball straight and makes crisp
contact with his irons, but I espe-
cially like what he is doing when it
comes to his short game.”
Alongside Bender is the group of
eight freshmen – Charlie Kirkland,
Connor Banner, Carson Wood-
ward, Noah Attaway, Alex Green,
Eli Tipton, Isaac Peterson and
Ethan Peterson.
“I am very excited about the pro-
gression these freshmen are mak-
ing in such a short period of time,”
Renfro said. “Charlie Kirkland and
Connor Banner both have adapted
to the program well and are show-
ing improvement every time out
in matches and practices. Carson
Woodward and Noah Attaway both
played at the Unicoi County Middle
School with our expectations set.
Hopefully that will help them in the
transition to the sport at the high
school level. Eli Tipton and Alex
Green have baseball skills and are
transitioning those skills to the golf
course so far. Isaac Peterson and
Ethan Peterson both have recently
joined the team and are making an
immediate impact to the program
with how well they are at practice,
which translates to playing better in
matches.”
There are two young ladies on
the girls’ side this season. Senior
Katlyn Higgins is returning for her
last year. She had a solid junior cam-
paign and is primed for an even bet-
ter swan song.
“This being Katlyn’s senior sea-
son, I’m looking forward to her
leading the program as she finishes
her Lady Blue Devil career on a high
note.” Renfro said.
When asked what he specifically
likes about his senior Higgins’ Ren-
fro said: “It’s not just one thing, she
is solid in all facets of her game.’
Junior Leah Delp is the other Lady
Devil golfer on the roster.
“Leah has shown plenty of prom-
ise, and is working hard at her craft.
She brings a determination to the
team and a learning attitude,” Ren-
fro said.
In preparing for the 2019 season,
the UCHS golfers have spent a great
deal of time practicing at the Erwin
Elks Club.
“We need to give a huge thanks
to the Erwin Elks Club for stepping
up and providing a home for our
youngsters to train and improve,”
Renfro said.

The UCHS golf team competes
in the Large School Conference
made up of themselves and 10 oth-
er teams – Science Hill, Tennessee
High, Dobyns-Bennett, Sullivan
East, Sullivan South, Sullivan Cen-
tral, Volunteer, Daniel Boone, Eliz-
abethton, David Crockett and Uni-
coi County.
The Blue Devils and Lady Devils
have already competed in matches
across the area. They have compet-
ed in several matches so far with 12
more to play.
“Every match is about improving
your game to prepare yourself for
the conference tournament,” Ren-
fro said.
The Blue Devils and Lady Devils
are scheduled to host a junior varsi-
ty match at the Erwin Elks Club on
Thursday, Aug. 29. They are sched-
uled to travel to Bays Mountain
Golf Club for a match on Sept. 3.
The Large School Conference
Tournament is scheduled for
Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Elizabeth-
ton Golf Course. The Large School
District 1 tournament is scheduled
for Monday, Sept. 30, at Cattails
Golf Course. The UCHS golfers will
compete in these tournaments as a
team and individually.
