TENSEGRITY STRUCTURE

Self-tensioning structures composed of rigid structures and cables,

with forces of traction and compression, which form an integrated
whole. In other words, tensegrity is the property demonstrated by a
system that employs cables (traction) and rigidity of other elements
(usually steel, wood or bamboo) capable of acting under the intrinsic
stresses (traction and compression) together and simultaneously, giv-
ing greater resistance and formal stability. It creates an interconnect-
ed structure that works biologically like muscles and bones, where
one element strengthens the other.

TENSEGRITY ARCH
Odisha Biennial 2019 organised
in Kalabhoomi, Bhubaneshwar on
theme of Illusion and use of bam-
boo to decorate the venue. And, the
perfect structure to give the illusion
of flying structs is tensegrity struc-
ture therefore an arch was intro-
duced in the path to the main stage
to enhance the illusion of floating.
For Tensegrity Arch a base module of Three struts tensegrity structure was made using stainless steel cables
fixed on ends of bamboo using end screw. Followed by anchoring the other modules together placing the
modules such that no structs will touch each other. A long chain of tensegrity module with nine modules were
fixed together to form a straight line after which it was placed on site then bended in form of arch, simultane-
ously the tightening of cables using turnbuckle was done resulting in a free standing bamboo tensegrity Arch.

TENSEGRITY RING
Another structure Tensegrity Ring was also installed
on venue, for which it started with preparing a scaled
model using sticks and thread. After succesful solving
the possibility of the structure it was executed in 1:1
scale using the bamboo and stainless steel cables.
Specified length of bamboo were cut with three holes
at each end. Then it was placed on ground to anchor
the bamboos together. The turnbuckles were used to
tighten the cables placed on diagonals of the bamboo
to provide tension and stability to the structure.
