Preliminaries

Good morning, class! Good morning, ma’am!

How are you today? We are great, ma’am!

That is good to hear! I will be expecting

everyone to cooperate.

Learning Episode 1

A. Motivation
Class, I will show you pictures. As I show to you the
picture, please try to tell me the purpose of the
thing shown in the picture.

The purpose of our life is to glorify God by doing

good things.

The purpose of our life is to become successful

someday so we can give our parents the life that
they deserve.

The school serves as our training ground. We are

molded by our teachers here so we can achieve
our dreams.

The purpose of school is for us to be taught with

good manners and values to become better
individuals in the society.

Now let me ask you one question. Why are We are here to learn, ma’am!
you here?

What should you do to learn? We should listen and pay attention, ma’am.

Very good! Listening is an act of respect, Yes, ma’am!

class. You should always remember that
you should always listen and pay attention
when someone is speaking in front of you.
You should remember to respect not only
your teachers, but also your parents and
the people around you.

1. Presentation

Do you know that an author of a story or

any other reading material has also a
purpose? That is our lesson for today,
Identifying Author’s Purpose in Writing.

2. Statement of the Aim

These are our targets for today’s lesson.

Kindly read. (The students read the objectives.)

Objectives:

a. Cite reason/proof why the author

has that particular purpose.
b. Determine the author’s purpose for
writing with the use of checklist.
c. Show appreciation of the topic by
sharing the purpose of their
existence on earth.

3. Statement of the Importance

Our lesson for today is important because (The students listen.)

knowing the author’s purpose in writing
will help us understand the essence of the
reading selection, the message it partakes,
and the value of information it gives.

B. Probe and Respond

This time class, let us know the Author’s

Purpose in Writing as well as its kinds.
There are three purposes in writing. For
you to remember these purposes, you only
have to take note of the word PIE.

Author’s Purpose in Writing - is the reason an

author decides to write about a specific topic.
Then, once a topic is selected, the author must
decide whether his purpose for writing is to
inform, persuade, or entertain the reader.

What is an author’s purpose?

Teacher explains:

When an author knows his purpose in writing, he

will have a clear view of how he will present his (The students listen.)
ideas to help his readers. He will be guided on how
to develop his writing and be able to achieve
writing an article truly for its purpose.

AUTHOR’S PURPOSES IN WRITING

(PIE)

1. To Persuade
In a text that is written to persuade, the
author’s primary purpose is to compel
readers to take action, convince them of an
idea through argument, or to reaffirm their
existing beliefs.

Example:

The school fair is right around the corner, and

tickets have just gone on sale. We are selling a
limited number of tickets at a discount, so move
fast and get yours while they are still available.
This is going to be an event you will not want to
miss! Spend time with your family and friends at
our school fair. Buy your tickets now!

What is it about that the author is trying to

convince the readers? The author is trying to convince his readers to buy
tickets.
How can you say that the author is trying to
convince the readers? We can say that author is trying to convince the
readers because the text is urging the readers to
buy tickets, which means that the author is
persuading the readers of the text.
2. To Inform
The primary purpose of texts that are
written to inform is to enlighten the reader
or provide the reader with information
about a topic.

Example:

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection

causing a severe flu-like illness and, sometimes
causing a potentially lethal complication called
severe dengue. The incidence of dengue has
increased 30-fold over the last 50 years. Up to 50-
100 million infections are now estimated to occur
annually in over 100 endemic countries, putting
almost half of the world’s population at risk.

Does the text provide facts and information?

Yes, ma’am. The text provides information about
dengue.
Is that enough reason to consider that the
author’s purpose in writing this text is to inform? Yes, ma’am. The text contains facts and explains
dengue. The author had also cited the number of
dengue incidence which is probably based on
research.
3. To Entertain

The primary purpose of texts that are

written to entertain is to amuse readers.
This does not mean that the text must be
happy; the text could be a tragedy, but the
main reason for writing the text is to
entertain readers.

Example:

I was walking in the middle of the ground when

I saw you with your new girl. You were holding her
hands the way you used to hold mine. I should
have never let you go. All that is left in me right
now is regret.

What do you think is that kind of text?

I think the text is a part of a story.
What is then the author’s purpose?
The author’s purpose is to entertain, ma’am.
Why do you say so?
Because a story is supposed to entertain the
readers. This text may not be a happy kind of text
yet it affects my emotion. Therefore, the author’s
purpose is to entertain.
Very good!

There is a checklist that can help us in

identifying an author’s purpose, class. Later, I will
show you how to use the checklist.

Learning Episode 2:
A. Modeling

This time, I will read a short text. After reading,

I will identify the author’s purpose in writing the (The students listen.)
text with the help of a checklist.

(The teacher shows the checklist to the class.)

(The teacher starts reading the text.)

Tourism that takes responsibility for the

protection of cultural traditions and land is called
“ecotourism”. As eco-tourists, we should be aware
of the impact that we have on the places that we
visit. To ensure that future generations can enjoy
these places as much as we do, we must be sure to
use resources like water and electricity wisely. We
must also respect and support the cultural
traditions of the places we visit. In this way, these
places will maintain the qualities that made them
unique in the first place.

Please pay attention as I show you how to use

the checklist because, you will also be tasked to
identify author’s purpose after this.

(The teacher starts identifying the author’s

purpose using the checklist.) (The students watch as the teacher answers the
checklist.)
Learning Episode 3:

A. Guided Practice

Let us divide the class into three groups. The

first two rows will be group 1, the next two rows
will be group 2, and the last two rows will be group
3.

You may rearrange your chairs and form a circle

so you can brainstorm with your group mates. (The students rearrange their chairs.)

Using the checklist, you will identify the

author’s purpose in writing the text which will be
assigned to your group. Each of your members will
be given a copy of the text. You will be given (5)
five minutes to finish answering the checklist. After
the given time, a representative must be chosen
from each group to present your work to the class.

Remember not to leave any unanswered item.

Am I understood?

Your time starts now!

read the texts and identify the author’s purpose.

Are you ready? Yes, ma’am!
