CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Computer-Based learning or (CBL) is the term used for any kind of learning
with the help of computers. It has completely modernized the way that students
learn. It can make the lessons more interactive and engaging so it could be
understandable by other learners like students who learns in visuals or what they
see. It can also be combined with traditional methods to enhance the overall
learning experience. This study is about the advantages of having the presence of
computer inside a classroom and what are the possible contributions it could give
in student's efficiently learning. As researchers, we provide readers with details as
to why computer-based learning is important and how it affects the academic
performance of Grade 12 ICT.
The main reason for this research is to determine the certain effects of CBL
and to decide or come up to a conclusion whether it is necessary to use it in every
school or just in other grade level. Implementing CBL could be the start of the new
form of studying whereas students rely on what does a computer offer to their
studies with its features as well as the vast varieties of information it gives.
Computer helps in storage of information in schools and it also have a quick data
processing that is possible with the help of computer which plays an important role
in education as it helps to access Internet to gain more knowledge and keep in

touch to the world. It would be a big help for students to know if it is worth to spend
time on understanding computer works or just settle in having lectures or writings
and depend on the text books or more on hard copies.
Though with its beneficial and essential aspects there are still the bad
aspects that could be observe once a student engaged with the computer in a long
period of time or even in limited, whether their dependency on computer will rise,
their focusing in studying while using computer will decrease. With the excessive
use of computer, students lack the verbal as well as non-verbal skills which is very
important for the development of social and emotional skills. Computers may
revolutionize and improve education and it could lead them towards a bright and
ideal future.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Computer is a trailblazing electronic device which is useful. It is used by
humans for handling documents and surfing the Internet. As the invented
technology gets more advanced by days, the computer seems to be useful in
learning. In the age of globalization, computers are considered to be ideal tool for
educators. Harwood and McMahon (1997) claim that the creation and use of
digital-assisted teaching activities that enhance students’ visual and intellectual
constructs have a positive impact on learning concepts that are difficult to
understand.
Computer-based technology has penetrated several aspects of life and
environment, but there is little knowledge of how it can be used to advertise student
engagement, a concept that acquires high exposure in higher education widely
associated with a number of positive academic outcomes. Despite the fact that
current changes in education place major focus on the inclusion of computer-
based technology in the curriculum and the use of it to strengthen teaching and
learning.
Roblyer stated in 1989 that computer programs seemed to have a slightly
higher impact on mathematics than reading and language skills, although this
difference was not important. The influence of computers used to teach cognitive
skills (problem solving and critical thinking) was about the same as mathematics
and reading / language. The use of computers to teach science had the highest
impact and the tutorials used to read had a positive effect. As Roblyer concluded
in 1989, there seems to be insufficient evidence to prove that computer-based
instructions have any impact on drop-out rates.
While computer-based teaching and curricula figure to be the dominant
technological influence on education, other innovations will have impacts as well.
Imaging technologies will permit study of students’ brain activity and blood flow as
they engage in various kinds of problem solving or creative activities. No longer
restricted to research, these findings about a student’s “mental life” are likely to
influence pedagogical approaches as well as his or her placement in special or
mainstream educational settings.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The following questions will find the answer through this study:
1. Is it efficient to apply CBL or Computer-Based Learning in all subjects?
2. Does it affect the quality of learning ability of the students especially Grade
12 ICT Strand?
3. How computer-based teaching methods affects the academic performance
of every students mainly Grade 12 ICT?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This part enumerates who will benefit and will be able to gain knowledge
from this research.
Students. This research will help them to have an advanced knowledge for
their future research so that it can be meaningful and helpful for them. Another
advantage is they can be able to have a contribution to another set of students
who will be interested to the same topic. And to enhance students’ motivation and
extend their knowledge in computer.
Teachers. Teacher’s knowledge in terms of computer is important, they can
be able to share a certain information about technology that can give a beneficial
to all students. Also, computer-based methods can make a teaching process more
easily and comfortable for both teachers and students.
Community. Gives ideas to all people who are interested to learn about
computer technology and to give information for them to apply to their everyday
lives. They can also tell others all the advantages of technology to help their work
more simply.
Future Researcher. This research’s purpose is to help a future researcher
have a reference to apply to their own study and to help them gain information
about the topic that they have chosen.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This research was conducted at ICCT Colleges San Mateo. This study limits
its coverage on the current Grade 12 Information Communication Technology
Strand. The study focuses on the current Grade 12 ICT students of the present
year S.Y 2019-2020. This study will not cover other problems that are not
considered as one of the possible effects of CBL on the students. This study
considers every aspects of students’ opinion that has an effect on their academic
performance, skills, and their behavior.

This is the definition of the terms that used in this research study in order
to clearly understand of the reader.
