Republic of the Philippines

Province of Bohol
Municipality of Inabanga
Barangay Ondol

BARANGAY HISTORY
The name “ONDOL” was first given south of Lawis and midway to Ilaud by the first
inhabitants who settled the place. This barrio was organized during the Spanish regime by the
Aparre brothers who were the first to settle the place namely: Valentin, Juan, Teburcio and Basilio
with the help of a neighbor, Venancio Mejias. They were all fisherman who made fortune of fishing
in the sea along the shores of Ondol. It was said that school of fish particularly bolinao abound the
shores of Ondol and that there was a time school of fish appeared very closed to the seashores so
thick that it looks like a boiling coconut oil in the frying pan right in the vicinity of the village. It
was so plentiful that the people give up in getting the fish after several days of hauling them the
sea. The swarm remains on the seashore and in the river nearby for days uncollected dead and
rotted. Foul and repulsive odor dominated the entire place because of the rotting fish in the river.

The most practical explanation of the origin of the name “Ondol” could be presented
through the analysis of the meaning of the word ONDOL viewed in the context of a local name of
place or thing which was a dead end due to cutting or breaking or the end is natural. The vernacular
word ONDOL is used to mind or upper section of a pole and if allowed to grow to maturity the
pole may not be as the one which is not injured or whose top point is broken. The kind of a bamboo
is called Ondol.

The village is located on a sandbar surrounded by a wide swamp and big mangroves. In
the northern part is a river is said to be the spawning ground of shrimps and lobsters. Seldom that
a fisherman do not catch their fish nets just to catch this much needed shrimps used as baits in
hook and line fishing. The river has a neither source nor tributaries. It has its end just a hundred
meters away from the barrio proper.

People from other places who wanted to catch fish and shrimps for baits followed the river
course only to find at it ended right at the back of the barrio so they called river Ondol because it
is cut short and it has no course. Fisherman and settlers of the barrio began calling this place Ondol.
When there was official call for registration of official name of the place to be made into a barrio
of Inabanga, the residents agreed to call their place ONDOL.

The barrio has a total population of ___ in the year 2020 survey. There were ___ males
and ___ females, total household ___, and total families ___. This is the only barrio in Inabanga
that makes a deep sea fishing village devices called BOBO. The fisherman from their fishing
villages come and buy it this as fishing traps, other people are engaged in nipa making and mat
waving but fishing is their source of livelihood.
