Activity-Q1 Useful & Harmful Material
Activity-Q1 Useful & Harmful Material
Concepts:
Toxic — Poison or causes long-term illness (such as cancer). Pesticides, paint thinners, many
auto products and some cleaners are toxic.
Flammable — Burns easily. Paint, thinners and other solvents, and auto products are the most
flammable home products.
Corrosive — Eats through materials (acid, for example). Oven cleaners, drain cleaners, toilet bowl
cleaners, and auto batteries are common corrosive products.
Reactive — Can spontaneously ignite or create poisonous vapors when mixed with other
products. (therefore NEVER mix household products). Can also explode when expose to heat, air,
water, or shock. Ex. Firecrackers, bleach and ammonia
compressed gas is a substance that is a gas at normal room temperature and pressure, and is contained
under pressure, usually in a cylinder. Some compressed gases (e.g. acetylene) are stabilized in the
cylinder by dissolving the gas in a liquid or solid matrix.
Biological hazards are also known as biohazards refer to biological substances that pose a threat to the
health of living organisms, primarily that of humans. This can include samples of a microorganism, virus or
toxin (from a biological source) that can affect human health.

Corrosive
____1. Toxic substances a. chemicals that react readily with other chemicals
____2. Reactive b. are usually strong acids or bases and exist in almost every workplace
and home that can cause damage as soon as they come in contact with
something or if the chemical is digested or inhaled
____4. Corrosive d. material that ignites easily and burns rapidly with a flame or
combustible substances

C. Identify the pictures below and write their names on their corresponding harmful properties. Some materials may be
classified to more than one property. (Pictures may not be drawn, just give the names or its identity.

PROPER AND SAFETY WAYS IN HANDLING MATERIALS
Materials that we use for cleaning and painting contain ingredients that maybe be hazardous to living things and
environment. Use, store, and handle potentially hazardous materials properly. There are safety precautions to follow in
the proper use, handling, and storage of possibly hazardous materials.
B. 1. On the chart below, identify where each of the given materials should be stored by writing down the names under
the correct column.
2. Place inside the correct box the different pictures of the household materials
