 Ensure that all safety precaution procedure will be carried out prior to start the
work.
D. Installation of Pipe Hangers and Supports

The installation of hanger and support for refrigerant piping system will be carried
out in the following manner:
 Prior to installation, check that the work area is free from debris or foreign
materials that can obstruct the work to be carried out.
 All materials will be inspected for damage before commencing work.
 Ensure workers are wearing the required mandatory protective clothing,
equipment and other additional safety equipment necessary prior to execution of
work.
 Ensure that the scaffolding is safe to use or marked “Green” by safety department.
 Ensure that the latest versions of “Approved for construction” piping layout and
detailed drawings showing floor plans, elevations and details indicating
penetrations in floors and walls and the relationship to other trade installations are
available.
 The pipes will be carried and installed to the specific working area either manually,
or by chain hoist and/or by using mobile crane of adequate capacity.
 Check and verify the location of required sleeves to be installed for pipes
penetration thru floors, walls and partition construction. Steel pipe or sleeves will
be used for sleeves and also refer to the layout and drawings indicating
penetrations and installations in floors, walls and partitions. The sleeve passing
thru floors and walls with membrane water proofing will be extended to 50mm
above finished floor level.
 The sleeve size for stack sleeves at interior floor and wall will have 6mm annular
space between sleeve and pipe. For aboveground exterior floor and wall pipe
penetrations, a 25mm annular clear space will be provided between sleeve and
pipe to allow installation of mechanical sleeves. The mechanical sleeve seals will

method statement. Refer to relevant method statement for installation of thermal

insulation of piping. Inspected by QA/QC, to be witnessed by the Engineer.
 Locate rough-in connections; appropriate size of box out will be provided for the
rough-in connections prior to pouring of concrete slabs, floors, wall or roofs. Refer
to the relevant drawings showing box out for rough-in connections.

E. Refrigerant piping system installation

 Always follow manufacturers guidelines for pipe sizing and installation. If unsure
call the manufacturers engineering support line to make certain you are using
proper sizes and methods according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. This is
especially important for longer horizontal or vertical piping runs. Make sure you do
not need an oil trap in the refrigeration circuit and if you do where is the optimum
place to install the trap according to the manufacturer.
 Proper Refrigeration Piping Installation Practices - Ensuring that new system is
clean and free of debris especially in the piping. When finished brazing the pipe
joints always use caps or plugs on any piping exposed to the atmosphere.
Keeping trash and moisture out of the system is very important and will save time
later on when the system is permanently sealed and ready for evacuation
procedures. Using nitrogen flow to prevent oxidation will also keep the piping
clean and free of contaminants.
 Proper pipe support is essential in the design and installation of the piping. Lose
piping will vibrate and move. This will eventually eat a hole in the piping leading to
catastrophic system failure in an air conditioner or heat pump. Ensure equipment
has spring isolators or rubber vibration isolators to reduce vibration in the line set
and equipment.
 Do not install the piping where it will be subject to accidental tripping or piercing.
Anything that can potentially damage the piping needs to be addressed in the
installation and design. Protecting the refrigerant pipe from any future damage is
essential and can also make the job look professional when complete.
 Always keep in mind the risers and possible pressure drop in the refrigerant piping
based on total equivalent length (TEL). Oil traps should be used as recommended
by the manufacturer. Keeping liquid refrigerant from reaching the compressor is
essential to protecting the compressor especially reciprocating compressors.
Proper refrigerant pipe is essential and recommended by the manufacture.
 Avoid solder joints when necessary using home run piping from the condenser to
the evaporator when possible. After brazing is complete proper refrigerant pipe
evacuation and pressure testing is necessary to purge all non-condensing gasses
from the refrigerant piping.
 Don’t forget to insulate. Well-insulated suction lines minimize the heat absorption,
which leads to diminished capacity. Proper insulation also controls condensate
that could form on the suction line.
 Remember to seal all ends, joints, and any other open areas (including slits
necessary to fit the insulation tubing over the installed piping) with insulation
adhesive glue to avoid condensation of refrigerant piping.

Page 25 M-ANM-3A1DPW-CMAC-MST-000007 Rev. A

METHOD STATEMENT FOR INSTALLATION OF REFRIGERANT PIPING SYSTEM

F. Installation of Pipe Insulation and Pipe Markers

 Refrigerant pipewok shall be insulated with closed cell syntethic rubber foam
insulation, 25mm thick and finished as described for refrigerant pipes as per
manufacturer recommendation.
 The Slip-On Method is used when you can insulate new piping before it goes up
or as it is being connected.
 All you do is slip the pipe insulation over the pipe or copper tubing.
 It will follow bends in tubing and can be slipped right over bent tubing, 45° sweat
ells, 90° sweat ells and couplings. We would recommend wall thicknesses above
1/2ʺ installed using fabricated mitered fittings.
 Allow the adhesive to set until tacky to the touch when joining surfaces; apply
slight pressure to both ends.
 At the beginning, at every 12 to 18 feet and ends of piping runs, the insulation
shall be adhered directly to the copper using a 2ʺ strip of adhesive. Insulation
should not be adhered to the pipe at the extreme low points in any piping run.
G. Testing and Inspection
The testing will cover installed refrigerant piping system and will be done in
with relevant specification.

 The high side and low side of each completed refrigeration piping system must be
pressure tested at a pressure not less than the lower of the system test pressure
or the setting of the pressure-relief device protecting the high side or low side of
the system as per approved specs. And manufacturer recommendation.
 The testing media must be dry nitrogen. The Contractor must perform the leak test
before insulating the pipes.
 Isolate the compessor from the leak test bu firmly closing the suction and
discharge valves.
 Test the refrigerant copper pipe with nitrogen.
 The piping will be checked with soap and water solution.
 Do not attempt to repair any leak while the system is pressurized. If any leaks are
found relieved the nitrogen test pressure and perform repairs.
 The pressure will be held for a period of 24 hours. If there is no visible loss of
pressure after 24 hours, the testing process is passed. It is also considered the

Page 26 M-ANM-3A1DPW-CMAC-MST-000007 Rev. A

METHOD STATEMENT FOR INSTALLATION OF REFRIGERANT PIPING SYSTEM

tolerance of the pressure test base on environmental adoptation (+/- 5 psi) would
be also considered accepted.
 If a pressure gauge indicated the pressure drop on the said limitation, the testing
operations connection and shut-off valve be first rechecked for leak tightened as
necessary.
 If a pressure drop is still evident, then all joints and lastly the piping it self will be
checked with soap and water solution.
 Recharge the system as previously described, and allow it to remain under
pressure for 24 hours maximum pressure at least 1.5 times the operation pressure
or as per manufacturer / supplier required.
 Raise IR for witnessing the leak testing for Refrigerant copper pipe works.
