GG-WP: Good Game Well Played

By: Kenny Malabanan

There is a board game that captured every Marian’s heart: The Game of the
Generals. It was invented by a Filipino named Sofronio H. Pasola Jr. in 1970. The
Game of the Generals is often referred to as “GG”, and here in the Philippines, it is
called as “Salpakan”.

This board game is played in one versus one together with a neutral arbiter who
applies the rules of the game. First, the players start arranging their armies and most
especially, their flag. The flag is the most important piece in this game if the opposing
player captured the flag, then, he will be declared as the winner. The armies consist of
the five and four stars generals, three stars lieutenant, two stars major generals, one
brigadier general, and so much more. This game requires peculiar tactics to bluff the
opposing player in order to win. This game features the possible outcomes if the armies
tried to destroy each other.

This game is easy to learn and master. Once the players understand the
mechanics of this game, they are ready to conquer the battlefield. Thus, it is not all
about having a sharp mind because it affiliates the concept of strategic plans and luck.

This was played in the intramurals and all the students easily fell in love with this
Filipino-made game. GOOD GAME WELL PLAYED.
