PRESENT PERFECT VS PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS

Main aim:

By the end of the lesson the students will be able to understand differences
between Present Perfect and Present Perfect Continuous and how to use each
one.

Subsidiary aim:

Encourage students to express correctly using Present Perfect or Present Perfect


Continuous tenses

Assumptions:

Students know verbs in past participle and gerund form and they know Present
Perfect or Present Perfect Continuous structures.

Activity # 1 Warm-up
Time 2 minutes
Objective Activate previous knowledge
Procedure Teacher ask some questions about activities done recently
What have you eaten for breakfast in the mornings recently?
What have you done to be healthy?
Have you done exercise after wake up?
Activity # 2 Lead-in
Time 6 minutes
Objective By the end of the activity students should be able to identify how and when
use present perfect and present perfect continuous tenses
Procedure Teacher draws a time line on the board, writing Past and Now in the line.
Teacher writes above the line a sentence about one activity that started in
the past and the action is completed now.
Teacher writes below the line one sentences about one activity that started
in the past and still continue now.
Teacher explains when an action started in the past but It is completed at
the moment speaking is necessary to use Present Perfect tense, making
emphasis in the time line.
Teacher explains when an action started in the past but it is not completed
and still continue now is necessary to use Present Perfect continuous tense,
making emphasis in the time line.
Activity # 3 Talking about The Avengers
Time 10 minutes
Objective By the end of the activity students should be able to recognize the difference
between know Present Perfect or Present Perfect Continuous tenses.
Procedure Teacher shows pictures about each member of The Avengers and gives a
little information about each one, after show the picture, teacher paste on
the board sheet of papers with sentences about different activities that they
have done or they have been doing.
Teacher paste the sheet of papers above or below the time line according if
the activity is completed or still continue.
Activity # 4 Closing
Time 2 minutes
Objective By the end of the activity students should be able to express correctly using
Present Perfect or Present Perfect Continuous tenses
Procedure Teacher gives a sheet of paper with an exercise to understand Present
Perfect or Present Perfect Continuous tenses
Teacher and students answer the exercise together and teacher explains
reason for the answers
