ABSTRACT

This research paper aims to improve the existing Public Plaza at Poblacion,

Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental to a attract tourist and promote tourism. The public

plaza is facing certain problems nowadays including: Poor Lightning/unsafe, not well

manage, Lack of Good Quality in Services, Poor Conceptual Design/Beautification and

no proper area for parking. With these existing problems, this study conceptualizes a

design that suits for the improvement of public plaza and promote sustainability in

tourism development.

The researchers gathered the data following these methods: first, the

researchers made an interview to the people and to the tourist visited in public plaza and

get their comments and suggestions regarding the present features. Second, the

researchers incorporate the comments and suggestions that serve as an outline for the

improvement of the public plaza. Third, the researchers made an aesthetic conceptual

design of the public plaza following with the three schemes that features: Garden Park,

Fountain Park and Play Park. Then, the researchers made and select 200 individuals

randomly to choose the best scheme for the aesthetic conceptual design of the public

plaza. Results revealed that of the 3 schemes, the majority of the respondents selected

the 1st scheme which consists of fountain and Bermuda grass, improved lighting to

enhance perception of safety, proper garbage disposal, Semi-Restaurants, playground,

renewed walls, comfort rooms and proper Parking area and basketball court with small

forestation.This serves as final aesthetic conceptual design for the improvement of the

Public Plaza.
CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background and Rationale of the Study

A Plaza is an open public area that is usually near city buildings and that has

often trees and places to sit, walk and shop also it is a place where you can

communicate with different people. There are many objects and things that can be

seen there. Nowadays many people are not being contented on what they see that it

will need to promote conservation of natural environment and community

development. Our environment just like Plaza also needs to have more

improvements and get upgraded every time in order to attract the people or tourists

who are roaming around the Plaza.

Tourism nowadays demand will be continuous to grow. Plaza designed as a

recreation area of people who’d love to look for an attractive view and good spot

where people can relax with. One of the fastest and important sectors that have

great impact on the development of country’s economy is the tourism. It can also

promote the beauty of the city in order for the tourists to see the natural attractions.

Oroquieta City is the city of good life. Its name was derived from the word

ORO and KITA. The early in habitants then had found gold along the river. Thus the

name ‘Oro’ means gold and ‘Quita’ or ‘kita’ means to find. Oroquieta City Public

Plaza-Poblacion I. A unique park by the sea, its beautiful landscape is ideal for early

morning jogs and afternoon strolls. It is known to be one of the best Plazas in
Northern Mindanao. It provides a beautiful view of the Iligan Bay seascape. Many

large cities require having a place where different people meet each other.

As what the people of the community concerned and suggestions about the

public plaza nowadays which includes the following: They have an improper

parking area for the vehicles, they have lack of maintenance and poor quality of

services and lighting, there should have enough spaces for the vendors, there should

be a permanent stage, poor conceptual design and beautification of the public Plaza,

there must be a small comfort room for the personal necessities, improving some

structures like chairs and cottages and concreting the playground.

The possibility of making these suggestions and concerned can put together

an improved conceptual design of public Plaza at Oroquieta City. It will make people

feel good, safe and comfortable in utilizing this fascinating Plaza at Oroquieta City.

1.2 Statement of the Main Problem

The main problem of the study is to improve the existing Plaza in Poblacion,

Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental to promote tourism. Specifically it attempts to

answer the following problem:

1.2.1 What is the appropriate aesthetic conceptual design for the improvement of

the existing Plaza in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental?


1.3 Hypothesis

From the foregoing statement of the problem, the following hypothesis was

stated:

Ho1: There is no appropriate aesthetic conceptual design for the improvement

of the existing Plaza in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental.

1.4 Conceptual Framework

This study seeks to improve the Linamon Covered court. The illustration shows

the currently absence of stage and benches of Linamon Covered court as the independent

variables. Our dependent variable shows the appropriate aesthetic conceptual design and

dimensions of stage and benches for the improvement of Linamon Covered Court.

1.5 Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study focuses only on the appropriate aesthetic conceptual design for the

improvement of the existing Plaza in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental for it will

attract more tourists which can be a major source of tourism and economic benefits.
Nonetheless, structural design and manual estimate of conceptual design for the

improvement of Oroquieta Plaza will not be included.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The main concern of this study is to determine the aesthetic conceptual design for

the improvement of Oroquieta Plaza.

Results of this study may be beneficial to the following:

Oroquieta City Officials can positively benefit from the economic development

that will bring if the local government will bring this conceptual design for the

improvement of Oroquieta Plaza into reality. It will create high revenue for the city.

The Local Community who will be the major users of Oroquieta Plaza, as well

as the neighbor communities, will value the convenience of this design that will bring to

betterment of the quality of life in the society.

Students will be able to use this study as a basis for their study and they can also

do a follow-up on the recommendations given.

Researchers – the findings of this study would provide supplementary

perceptions to enhance important facts on providing future features in the Plaza located at

Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental.

1.7 Definition of Terms

To promote better understanding on how the concepts are used in this study,

their conceptual and operational definitions are presented below.


Aesthetic – it refers to the beautification for the improvement of Existing Plaza in

Poblacion I, Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental.

Appropriate- it refers to the suitable or proper conceptual design of the Plaza in

Poblacion I, Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental.

Conceptual Design – it refers to an early phase of the design process of the Plaza in

Poblacion I, Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental.

Development - is the process of developing the existing Oroquieta Plaza.

EEDMO – Economic Enterprise Development and Management Office.

Improvement - is the process of improving the Plaza located at Poblacion I, Oroquieta

City, Misamis Occidental.

Infrastructure- the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g.,

buildings, roads, and power supplies) needed for the operation of a society or

enterprise.

Plaza- is an open public area that is usually near city buildings and that has often

trees and places to sit, walk and shop also it is a place where you can

communicate with different people.

Scheme- an arrangement or large-scale systematic plan for the appropriate conceptual

design of the Plaza located at Poblacion I, Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental.


CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents a review of materials that are related to the concepts

considered in this study. It consists of three parts: Related literature, Related Study, and

Related Reading.

2.1 Related Literature

2.1.1 The Design of the Public Plaza

Public Plaza is one of the tourist attractions that has unique features that made the

tourist find it interesting and amazing. According to Yuen’s (1995), plaza is any public of

land set aside for aesthetic, educational, recreational or cultural use by the people in a

community. It features landscape that serve of many functions and providers of passive

and active recreation and environmental benefits.

The design of the plaza or recreation area can have a direct impact to the people’s

perception of safety and their willingness to use a space. Most tourist seek out parks

because I provide contact with the natural and social environment which offer

opportunities for meetings with friends, family bonding, watching and taking pictures on

beautiful views ; all of which help of established a feeling of comport and security.

Hence, well-designed and well-used parks are a great asset for local communities.

Improving plaza often takes a community effort. It takes a good deal of work

assessing, planning, organizing to get the new conceptual design or renovation of plaza

and ensure that it is maintained and managed well. Furthermore, well designed parks and
well restored historic sites at park can add greatly to the pleasant atmosphere of a

community.

2.1.2 Tourist and its Impact to Tourism Industry

Tourism has been constantly gaining around at a global scale where it minimizes

negative impacts on the environment, respecting local cultures, actively contributing to

the economic and social well-being of the community. For tourism to work, the

community needs to establish goal that promote the conservation of natural environment,

economic, prosperity and community development.

In addition, Tourism is significant economic driver as it promotes

interconnectedness through the world. It provides people visiting the place of their choice

with the services and boosting the country’s economy. Indeed, tourism has the potential

to strengthen conversation of natural assets of a community.

Tourists are the people who travel in order to visit and witness the beautiful view

and spots in the world. Most of the time, tourist desire to go to place like Boracay,

Chocolate Hills Puerto Princesa Underground River and etc. where attracts them the

most. Most tourists are well educated with sophisticated tastes which have resulted in the

demand for better service and products of the places they visited. Many tourist nowadays

travel with their families, resulting the needs for more family-oriented vacation spots as

well as this favorite destination.


2.1.3 Improvement of Public Plaza

Public Plaza is lungs of city offering green space fresh air to people who experience

anything but concrete and exhaust fumes. It can protect open land, extraordinary

landscapes and historic sites. A community with good plaza is a pleasant and sociable

place to live with a lively outdoor and cultural life. Residents spend more time in park;

they contribute to a sense of community. As a result, the people must pay attention for the

improvement of the plaza as it is a right place that attract tourists and create a vibrant

living environment.

2.1.4 Creating Safe Plaza Environments to enhance Community Wellness

In relation to this research by the Citizens Taskforce on the use and security of

park found that there was a direct relationship between the level of park use and the

perception of security: the larger the number of visitor involved in positive activities, the

more likely that anti-social behavior was deterred. The Taskforce linked recreational

programs with improved security by suggesting an emphasis on expanded recreation

initiatives will encourage greater use and ultimately create a safer park environment.

Furthermore, keeping park and recreation facilities safe is a key to community wellness

and has direct relationship to the people.


2.2 Related Study

A study of relevant literature is an essential step to get a full picture of what has

been done with regard to the problem under study. The investigator has made an attempt

to bring a brief review of research related to the present study to form the background for

the present study.

The necessary literature studies were carried through national/international

journals, periodical conferences, books, and recent data from internet source.

2.2.1 Improvement of Centennial Park at Barangay Dalipuga, Iligan City.

According to Salahoden, Llaban and et.At. The research aims to improve the

existing Centennial Park at Dalipuga to attract tourist and tourism in iligan city. The

Centennial Park is facing certain problems nowadays including: Poor Lightning/Unsafe,

not well managed, lack of good quality services, Poor conceptual Design/Beautification,

no proper area for parking and swimming. With these existing problems this study

conceptualizes a design that suits for the improvement of the Centennial Park and

promote sustainability in tourism development.

The researchers gathered the data following these methods: First, the researchers

made and interview to the people and to the tourist visited in Centennial Park and get

their comments and suggestions regarding the present features. Second, the researchers

incorporate the comments and suggestions that serve the outline for the improvement of

the park. Third, the researchers made an aesthetic conceptual design of the park following

with the three schemes that features: boardwalk extension, parking area with outdoor
food court and boardwalk extension, and swimming area. Then, the researchers made a

survey and select 150 individuals randomly to choose the best schemes for the aesthetic

conceptual design of the park.

Results revealed that of the 3 schemes, the majority of the respondents selected

the 2nd scheme which has boardwalk extension and parking area with outdoor food court.

This serves as final aesthetics conceptual design for the improvement of the park.

2.2.2 Conceptual Landscape Design of Rabago Park at Brgy. Villaverde,

Iligan City. Mitmug, Magadan, and et.At. March 2017

According to Mitmug, Magadan and et.al. The research aims to improve the

existing Rabago Park at barangay Villaverde and promote tourism in Iligan City. The

Rabago Park is facing certain problems nowadays including: Poor Lightning/Unsafe, not

well managed, Lack of Good Quality in Services, Poor Conceptual Design/Beautification

and no proper area for parking. With these exixting problems, this study conceptualizes a

design that suits for the improvement of Rabago Park and promote sustainability in

tourism development.

The researchers gathered the data following these methods: First, the researchers

made an interview to the people and to the tourist visited in Rabago Park and get their

comments and suggestions regarding the improvement of the park. Third, the researchers

made an aesthetic conceptual design of the park following with the three schemes that

features: Garden Park, Fountain Park and Play Park. Then, the researchers made and

select 150 individuals randomly to choose the best scheme for the aesthetic conceptual

design of the park.


Results revealed that of the 3 schemes, the majority of the respondents selected

the 3rd scheme which has basketball court, children’s playground and small forestation.

This serves as final aesthetic conceptual design for the improvement of the park.

2.2.3 The Conceptual Design for the Improvement of Balo-I Park with covered court

and Tennis Court at Poblacion, Balo-i Lanao del Norte byBin laden Isah,

(March 2018) Saint Peter’s College

Isah, Bin laden et al. (2019). This research paper aims to improve the existing

Balo-I Park with covered court at Balo-i Poblacion L.D.N. to a attract tourist and promote

tourism in Balo-i L.D.N. The Balo-I park is facing certain problems nowadays including:

Poor Lightning/unsafe, not well manage, Lack of Good Quality in Services, Poor

Conceptual Design/Beautification and no proper area for parking. With these existing

problems, this study conceptualizes a design that suits for the improvement of Balo-I

Park and promote sustainability in tourism development.

The researchers gathered the data following these methods: first, the researchers

comments and suggestions regarding the present features. Second, the researchers

incorporate the comments and suggestions that serve as an outline for the improvement of

the park. Third, the researchers made an aesthetic conceptual design of the park following

Thus, it is clear that the aesthetic design for the improvement and beautification of

the Balo-i Park should be implemented because it can attract more tourists which can be a

major source of tourism and economic benefits in Balo-I Lanao Del Norte.

2.3. Justification of the Present Study

The above articles in this chapter pinpoint the various aspects regarding public

plaza and its improvement. These problems are analyzed in the following chapter.

The present work will conduct survey to improve the existing public plaza located

at Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental. Through the planning process the general

consensus that came to light for this unique community is that the public plaza system

itself also needs to be unique in nature in order to truly be successful. With that in mind,

the goal for the city of Oroquieta is to create a public plaza system that allows each

neighborhood to have access to some of the same types of basic recreational amenities

and then allow public plaza to include an amenity with a special focus in order to create a

complementary system that will provide a broader range of amenities for the residents,

while reducing operational and maintenance costs for the City.


CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter involves the general methods of research used in this study. This

includes the subject of the study, research design, respondents of the study, locale of the

study, the research instruments and its reliability and validity and Data collection.

3.1 Subject of the Study

This will let the 200 randomly selected respondents that will represent the total

respondents of the study to freely fill in all the survey questionnaires and asked to choose

and select the best scheme for the appropriate conceptual design of the improvement of

existing Plaza in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental.

3.2 Research Design

In this study, the researchers came up with three design schemes for the

conceptual design of a public plaza which used both quantitative and qualitative research

methods. Also, a survey has been conducted to obtain the statistics from 200 respondents

in order to select the best conceptual design among the three schemes. In qualitative

research, the data were obtained from the 200 respondents who selected one from the

three designs for the conceptual design of public plaza. In qualitative research method,

the data were obtained from the comments and suggestions of the respondents on the

conceptual design of a public plaza.


3.3 Research Design Criteria Survey for Schemes

A. Aesthetic Appeal and Appearance

Is the concept and appearance of the conceptual design of a public plaza

aesthetically pleasing?

B. Organizations of the Structure

Does the structure in conceptual design for the improvement of existing public

plaza are stable and in proper arrangement?

C. Landscaping and Grounding

Do the landscape and Grounding are organized and pleasing to the eyes of the

tourist who visited at the plaza?

D. Ambiance and safety Environment

Does the public plaza promote good environment and safety for the people who

visited it?

3.4 Data Gathering Procedure

In fulfilment of the research study, the researchers will develop a step by step

process in gathering the data. The overall procedure followed in this study is shown in

Figure 3.1. The researchers will secure first the permission from the selected respondents

in Oroquieta City province of Misamis Occidental in conducting our study. Second, upon

approval the researchers personally distributed the questionnaire to the respondents which

includes the Age, Gender, Civil Status, Educational Attainment and occupation. Third
was the collection of the questionnaire issued to the respondents, followed by the

calculation of the respective data. And lastly, the interpretation of the gathered data on

this study based on the answers of the respondents.

3.5 Data Sampling

The researchers used the purposive sampling procedure in which the total

number of the respondents is available and purposely selected. It involves the task which

identifies the desired aesthetic design of the selected conceptual design for public plaza,

data collection, and data analysis.

3.6 Research Instrument Used

The research instrument that will be used in this study is a standardize

questionnaire, a survey questionnaire checklist to gather the needed data based on the

design criteria to determine the best appropriate conceptual design for a public plaza. The
draft of the questionnaire was drawn out based on the researcher’s reading, previous

studies, published related studies. A questionnaire was used as the main data-gathering

instrument for this study. It includes four design criteria for the respondent to choose

from which will determine what scheme is preferable to be constructed on the selected

area.

Scheme- 1 consists of fountain and Bermuda grass, improved lighting to enhance

perception of safety, proper garbage disposal, Semi-Restaurants, playground, renewed

walls, comfort rooms and proper Parking area and basketball court with small forestation.

Scheme-2 consists of Bermuda grass, proper garbage disposal, Semi-Restaurants,

comfort rooms, playground, renewed walls and proper Parking area, covered basketball

court with bleacher’s and small forestation.

Scheme-3 consists of Bermuda grass, Semi-Restaurants, playground, renewed

walls and proper Parking area, covered basketball court with bleacher’s and small

forestation.

3.7 Statistical Treatment of Data

After the gathering of data, the researchers will carefully then be translated and

tabulated the responses from the questionnaires and analyzed the data that was being

gathered. To derive comprehensive and valid results, the following statistical tools will be

used to analyze the collected data:

3.7.1 Frequency and Percentage. Frequency will be used to determine the

distribution of the responses in each category, while percentage was employed

to determine the position of the respondents’ responses out of the total number
of responses generated by the study.

3.7.2 Mean. This will be used for the identification of the best scheme design

for the chosen conceptual design for improving public plaza governed among

the three scenarios.

In determining the results of the survey by the 200 randomly selected respondents

for the best conceptual design, the data was treated using the following statistical tools:

CHAPTER 4

RESULTS, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

This chapter shows the collected data from interviews of various persons that

contributed in this study including the results and interpretation of data. It will also show

the three schemes of conceptual design of the improvement of public plaza in Oroquieta

City and the result of the chosen scheme by the respondents based on the conducted

survey.

The table 4.1 presents the results of the design evaluation on the first scheme on

improvement of the public plaza. The ratings of the selected 200 people on the design:

the aesthetic appeal & appearance was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.725;

organization of structures was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.575;

landscaping and grounding was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.495;

Ambiance and safety Environment rated excellent with weighted mean of 4.805. Thus the

total weighted mean on the 1st scheme is 4.650, which is rated as excellent by the

The table 4.2 presents the results of the design evaluation on the first scheme on

improvement of the public plaza. The ratings of the selected 200 people on the design:

the aesthetic appeal & appearance was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.600;

organization of structures was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.700;

landscaping and grounding was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.540;

Ambiance and safety Environment rated excellent with weighted mean of 4.715. Thus the

total weighted mean on the 2nd scheme is 4.639, which is rated as excellent by the

respondents.

improvement of the public plaza. The ratings of the selected 200 people on the design:

the aesthetic appeal & appearance was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.550;

organization of structures was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.475;

landscaping and grounding was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.460;

Ambiance and safety Environment rated excellent with weighted mean of 4.350. Thus the

total weighted mean on the 3rd scheme is 4.459, which is rated as excellent by the

respondents.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of findings based on the data gathered that

were subjected to statistical treatment and analysis. Conclusions are drawn in the light of

the findings and corresponding recommendations are presented. The presentation of

summary of findings and conclusion follows the same organization of the problem in the

first chapter. These are the interpreted after the appropriate statistical treatment was

applied. Findings are disclosed so as to come up with correct conclusion and suggest

appropriate recommendations.

5.1 Summary

The main problem of the study is to improve the existing Plaza in Poblacion,

Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental to promote tourism. Specifically it attempts to

answer the following problem:

1. What is the appropriate aesthetic conceptual design for the improvement

of the existing Plaza in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental?

The research group went to the existing unimproved public plaza in Oroquieta

City, Misamis Occidental to conduct interviews in relation with the research study. After

gathering data, we had developed three schemes of conceptual design for the

improvement of public Plaza.

Based upon a number of design criteria, 200 randomly selected respondents were

requested to be part of a survey wherein each one was asked to choose the best scheme
they think is the most appropriate conceptual design for the improvement of public Plaza.

The instrument used was a survey questionnaire checklist to gather the needed

data based on the design criteria to determine the best appropriate design. The draft of the

questionnaire was drawn out based on the researcher’s reading, previous studies,

published related studies. A questionnaire was used as the main data-gathering instrument

for this study. It includes four design criteria for the respondent to choose from.

5.2 Findings

The findings of the study were summarized as follows:

Scheme 1: Out of 200 respondents surveyed, the ratings given are as follows. the

aesthetic appeal & appearance was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.725;

organization of structures was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.575;

landscaping and grounding was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.495;

Ambiance and safety Environment rated excellent with weighted mean of 4.805. Thus the

total weighted mean on the 1st scheme is 4.650, which is rated as excellent by the

respondents.

Scheme 2: Out of 200 respondents surveyed, the ratings given are as follows. The

aesthetic appeal & appearance was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.600;

organization of structures was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.700;

landscaping and grounding was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.540;

Ambiance and safety Environment rated excellent with weighted mean of 4.715. Thus the

total weighted mean on the 2nd scheme is 4.639, which is rated as excellent by the

respondents.
Scheme 3: Out of 200 respondents surveyed, the ratings given are as follows. The

aesthetic appeal & appearance was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.550;

organization of structures was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.475;

landscaping and grounding was rated as excellent with weighted mean of 4.460;

Ambiance and safety Environment rated excellent with weighted mean of 4.350. Thus the

total weighted mean on the 3rd scheme is 4.459, which is rated as excellent by the

respondents.

5.3 Conclusions

Based on the result findings, the 1st scheme is chosen as the best and appropriate

conceptual design for the improvement of public plaza in Oroquieta City and the above

results shows the data. It was determined by the highest rating of the 1st scheme given the

design criteria.

5.4 Recommendations

Future researchers may conduct an in-depth study on similar topic considering

other factors that can contribute to the construction of public plaza in Oroquieta City,

Misamis Occidental.

1. Future researchers could come up with a complete plan and design

analysis of the selected scheme.

2. Other researchers should come up with an estimate of the total cost

of this conceptual design for the improvement of public plaza in

Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental.
