I. Objectives
 To determine the mass diffusivities of volatile organic liquids in air at different
temperatures using the capillary tube method
 To compare the results with those obtained from empirical equations (Lennard-Jones
and Gilliland Equations) and available data from books

II. Equipment and Materials


1. Water bath
2. 5 capillary tubes
3. Small electric fan
4. Barometer
5. Receptacles for capillary tubes
6. 5 volatile organic liquids
7. Digital Vernier caliper
8. Timer
9. Thermometer

III. Reagents Computation

The students will be using five volatile organic liquids for the experiment. 1ml each of
the volatile liquids will be used for the first trial. The liquid will be put into a capillary tube
and will be allowed to diffuse. After a few minutes, the new height of the remaining liquid on
the tube will be measured. Repeat the procedures using different temperatures for the second
and third trial. In total, the students will be needing 3ml each of the liquids to conduct the
experiment.
