the Subanen tribe.
PROPOSED TITLE: Music of the Lumad: The Subanen Tribe
AREA: Arts and Languages
TARGET LEARNERS/AUDIENCE: Tertiary Level

OBJECTIVES:
The aim of this topic is to introduce the tribal sounds of the Subanen tribe to younger
Filipinos, especially those who are in the tertiary level. This is to acknowledge and give
importance to their rituals and traditions as one of the early Filipino Tribes in the Philippines
and uncover its truths and meanings.

DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT:
Philippine music has variations from the very beginning of civilization here in the Philippines.
The Filipinos’ way of living during the pre-colonial times were tribal and therefore formed
different cultures, traditions and rituals. Before, the religion of the Filipinos was animists,
believing in gods and goddesses of the forest and water. In order to have a prosperous life
or lifestyle, they need to give praise to those gods and goddesses. And this is through rituals,
almsgiving and song that created the tribal sounds in the Philippines.
In the Mindanao region, Lumad is the term being used for the native or indigenous people.
The word Lumad is a Visayan word that refers to non-Christian and non-Muslim indigenous
people of Mindanao. Lumad music then has a variation of sounds having a wide repertoire
for different occasions including the use of different instruments to express their ritual.
The biggest group of Lumad is the Subanen (Subanon) Tribe of Zamboanga del Norte and
Zamboanga del Sur. Subanen derived from the Visayan word “suba” meaning “river” as
most of their people live near the river. The tribe came from Indonesia 2,000 to 6,000 years
ago. Upon the arrival of the Muslims who would often attack them for taxes and capture
slaves, they moved into the hinterlands. When the Spaniards and other group of people
came to the Philippines, they were driven further back to the forests and later on settled
with rice farming, fishing and the breeding of a variety of livestock.

Their music then became a part of their lifestyle. They lack warlike styles although war and
ritual dances are performed on special occasions. Each occasion has a corresponding
tradition and ritual. A thanksgiving ritual called buklog is performed at the start of planting
season to pray for a healthy harvest each year. And on weddings and courtship, their rituals
are accompanied with musical instruments.
These culture and tradition are rarely practiced by the present generation that is why there
is a threat that the culture might die on its own.
