Mission Statement

"The Institute will strive to be a centre of excellence on all population and relevant
issues through high quality education, teaching and research. This will be achieved
by (a) creating competent professionals, (b) generating and disseminating scientific
knowledge and evidence, (c) collaboration and exchange of knowledge, and (d)
advocacy and awareness.

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) Mumbai, formerly known as
the Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC) till 1970, was established in
July 1956 under the joint sponsorship of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, the Government of
India, and the United Nations. The Institute is under the administrative control of the
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

The Institute serves as a regional centre for Training and Research in Population
Studies for the ESCAP region. The Institute was re-designated to its present title in
1985 to facilitate the expansion of its academic activities and was declared as a
'Deemed University' in August 19, 1985 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 by the
Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The recognition has
facilitated the award of recognized degrees by the Institute itself and paved the way
for further expansion of the Institute as an academic institution. The faculty members
and the supporting staff belong to diverse interdisciplinary background with
specialisation in some core areas of population sciences, trained in India and abroad.

The Institute is the hub of population and health related teaching and research in
India, playing a vital role for planning and development of the country. During the
past years, students from different countries of Asia and the Pacific region, Africa and
North America have been trained at the Institute. The alumni of the Institute are
occupying prestigious positions at reputed national and international organisations,
universities, research institutes and non-governmental organisations.

The Institute offers seven different Post-Graduate, Doctoral, and Post Doctoral
courses, admission to which for the academic session 2020-2021 is announced
hereby. After completing the course, students of all programmes are well prepared
for: (i) admission to higher degree programmes in the best universities of the world;
(ii) a good career in teaching & research; (iii) multi-disciplinary professional career; or
(iv) independent consultant and specialist in health and development sectors.

Footnotes
1. Candidates having master degree other than subjects specified in the list for M.P.S. and having at least
two years of experience in Population and Health related field are also eligible.

2. All foreign students with sponsorship/on their own/ from any source will be selected on merit basis,
subject to fulfilling the eligibility criteria. Admission test will not be conducted for the foreign candidates.
Processing fee will not be charged to the candidates from foreign countries while submitting the
application form.

3. Duration of Ph.D. programme is specified for thesis submission and not for fellowship.

4. Government of India Fellowships @ Rs. 25,000/- per month for 1st and 2nd years and Rs. 28,000/- per
month for 3rd and 4th years available for the Indian students who have qualified NET for Lectureship
in Population Studies or its inter-disciplinary subjects conducted by the UGC. Such Ph.D. fellowship
also carries a contingency grant of Rs.10,000/- per year for the first two years and Rs. 20,500/- for the
third year. However the candidates, without NET qualification shall be awarded fellowship @
Rs.12,000/- per month for the 1st and 2nd years, and Rs.14,000/- per month for the 3rd and 4th years,
with a contingency grant of Rs.10,000/- per year. In addition, UGC-JRF and other fellowship holders will
also be considered for admission as per availability of seats.

5. Post Doctoral Fellowship applicants are required to send a hard copy of the application along with
supporting documents, and comprehensive research proposal to “The In-charge, Academic
Section, International Institute for Population Sciences, Govandi Station Road, Deonar,
Mumbai-400088” on or before July 01, 2020.

6 Candidates who have already passed the qualifying examinations and those who have already appeared/
shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However, admission of the
candidate will be cancelled if she/he fails to furnish the final examination results by September 30, 2020.

Course-wise Announcement
1. MASTER OF ARTS/SCIENCE IN POPULATION STUDIES (M.A./M.Sc.)
Applications are invited for admission to M.A./M.Sc. in Population Studies during the Academic Session
2020-2022 to commence from July 01, 2020.
No. of Seats: 50 Seats with Government of India Fellowship.
Eligibility: Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree from recognized universities in India or abroad in any
subject with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for reserved candidates) of aggregate marks/equivalent
grade in all subjects will be eligible for admission. Eligible foreign candidates can also apply for
admission provided if they secure financial support from any outside agency.
Candidates who have already passed the qualifying degree examinations and those who have already
appeared/ shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However, the
admission of the candidate will be cancelled, if s/he fails to furnish final result by September 30, 2020.
The upper age limit is 25 years as on June 30, 2020. Marks and age will be relaxed for candidates
belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS categories and female candidates as per Government of India
rules only.
Duration: Two years (Full-Time)
Fellowship: Each selected Indian student will be awarded a Government of India Fellowship @ Rs.
5,000/- per month.
Selection Criteria: The selection will be made on the basis of an Online Entrance Test across India.
The Online Entrance Test will comprise objective type questions of multiple choices. The syllabus of
Entrance Test will consist of Basic General Knowledge, Logical Reasoning, English Grammar, Basic
Mathematics, Population, Health, and Social Science Issues. The test venue will be notified in the
Admit Card. Admission test will not be conducted for the foreign candidates and admission will be
offered directly if foreign candidates fulfill the eligibility criteria of the Institute.
Reservation: Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS & female candidates will be considered as per
the Government of India norms only.

Registration for Admission Test and Processing Fee: All eligible candidates are required to register
online by visiting the Institute’s website www.iipsindia.ac.in during December 18, 2019 to February
03, 2020.
The non-refundable processing fee for the Online Test is Rs. 1000/- for General Category, Rs. 500/- for
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), Rs. 500/- for EWS and Rs. 250/- for SC/ST/PWD. Those interested in

Applications are invited for admission to M.Sc. in Bio-statistics and Demography during the Academic
Session 2020-2022 to commence from July 01, 2020:

aggregate marks/equivalent grade in all subjects will be eligible for admission. Eligible foreign
candidates can also apply for admission provided they secure financial support from any outside agency.

shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However, admission of the

3. MASTER OF POPULATION STUDIES (M.P.S.)
Applications are invited for admission to Masters in Population Studies (M.P.S.) during the academic session
2020-2021 to commence from July 01, 2020.

Eligibility: Candidates having M.A./M.Sc. degree from a recognized university in India or abroad with a minimum
of 55% (50% for reserved candidates) of aggregate marks/equivalent grade in the subjects. Anthropology, Bio-
statistics, Development Studies, Economics, Geography, Health Statistics, Mathematics, Population Studies,
Political Science, Population Education, Psychology, Rural Development, Social Work, Sociology, and Statistics
will be eligible for admission. Candidates having Master degree, other than subjects specified above and having
at least two years of experience in Population and Health related field are also eligible to apply. Eligible foreign
candidates can also apply for admission provided if they secure financial support from any outside agency.

Personal Interview. The Online Entrance Test will comprise objective type questions of multiple choices. The
syllabus of Entrance Test will consist of Basic General Knowledge, Logical Reasoning, English Grammar, Basic
Mathematics, Population, Health and Social Science issues. The test venue will be notified in the Admit Card.
Based on the performance in the Online Test, shortlisted candidates will be called for personal interview at IIPS.
Final selection will be based on the weighted average of scores of Online Test and personal interview.

4. MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY IN POPULATION STUDIES/BIO-STATISTICS AND DEMOGRAPHY (M.Phil)

Applications are invited for admission to Master of Philosophy in Population Studies/Bio-statistics and
Demography (M.Phil) during the academic session 2020-2021 to commence from July 01, 2020.

No. of Seats: 50 Seats with Government of India Fellowship.

Eligibility: Candidates holding a Master’s degree in Population Studies, Demography, Bio-statistics and
Epidemiology, Bio-statistics & Demography, and Bio-statistics from a recognized university in India or abroad
with a minimum of 55% (50% for reserved candidates) of aggregate marks or equivalent grade will be eligible for
admission. Eligible foreign candidates can also apply for admission provided they secure financial support from any
outside agency.

Candidate who have already passed the qualifying examinations and those who have already appeared/ shall be

Applications are invited for admission to Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Population Studies/Bio-statistics and

Eligibility: Candidates having M.Phil. in Population Studies, Bio-statistics & Demography from a recognized

7. PART-TIME PH.D PROGRAMME
Applications are invited for admission to the Part-time Ph.D programme of the Institute for the academic session 2020-
2021.

Duration: Four to Six years including Pre-PhD course work.

No. of Seats: Two

Eligibility: The part-time Ph.D programme shall be open to candidates with Master’s degree and at least five
years of work experience after Master’s Degree in the field of Population Studies/Demography/Public Health in
academic institutions/central and state governments/research and development organizations, who are unable to
pursue the doctoral programme in full-time mode. The applicants for part-time Ph.D programme shall be
exempted from appearing for the online entrance test.

The Pre-Ph.D course work (six months duration) shall be compulsory for the candidates admitted to the Ph.D
programme under part-time mode. Total duration of part-time Ph.D programme shall be for a minimum of four
years (including coursework) and maximum of six years.

No Age Limit.

Selection Criteria: Candidates should apply online. However, they are required to send a hard copy of research
proposal to the Institute. Selection will be selected based on off-line written test and personal interview conducted
by the Ph.D Admission Committee of the Institute. Foreign students are exempted from personal interview. The

8. POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP (P.D.F.)
OFFLINE ADMISSION PROCEDURE

Applications are invited for admission to the full-time P.D.F. programme of the Institute with Government of
India fellowship for the academic session 2020-2021.

Duration: One year full-time.

Eligibility: Candidates having Ph.D. degree in Population Studies or subjects related with Population,

Desirable: Publications in peer reviewed journals/edited books. The upper age limit is 40 years as on June

50,000/- per month for one year.

Selection Criteria: Selection will be based on the research proposal presentation and personal Interview.
Foreign students are exempted from personal interview. The Institute shall not bear travel expense of the

All selected candidates shall be paid to-and-fro economy class air-fare expenses at the time of joining and
completing the programme. All selected candidates are required to be at the Institute as a full-time research

8. M.A. POPULATION STUDIES (THROUGH DISTANCE MODE EDUCATION) –
OFFLINE ADMISSION PROCEDURE

The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai has started the need-based distance course
with the recommendation of UGC in the field of population data analysis and inter-relationship between
population and development namely; M.A. in Population Studies. The deadline for submission of application for
this course for academic session 2020-2022 (2nd Batch) is July 31, 2020.
Eligibility criteria for admission: Admission to this course is open to all those with a Bachelor’s degree in any
social science subject/Health/Maths/ Stats or any similar degree recognized by Indian/Foreign universities with
50 percentage marks for general candidates and 45 percentage marks for the candidates belonging to
SC/ST/OBC and PWD category. Candidates having master’s degree and also those who are having work
experience will be given due weightage. The cut off percentage can further be reduced by the admission
committee for candidates with any additional qualifications. Reservation criteria will be followed as per the
Government of India norms.
After successfully completing all academic requirements given in the guidelines, the registered distance learner
will be awarded degree of “M.A. Population Studies” irrespective of any discipline he/she come from graduate
level.
Number of seats: There are 100 seats available for admission to this course. However, the Institute reserves
the right to decide number of students to be enrolled in each academic session depending upon number of
applications received.
Selection criteria: Selection of candidates for the course will be done by a selection committee duly constituted
by the Director of the Institute.

Availability of Application Form: The Application Form can be be downloaded from IIPS website and/or also
may be obtained from the In-charge, Department of Extra Mural Studies and Distance Education,
International Institute for Population Sciences, Deonar, Mumbai-400 088 in person or by sending a self
addressed 50/- stamped envolope (25cm x 12cm) on or before June 30, 2020.

The completed Application Form along with necessary enclosures (including e-mail ID & telephone number) and
printout of online payment receipt of non-refundable processing fee of 500/- for General, 250 for OBC-
non-creamy layer and 125 for SC/ST and PWD candidates should reach to the In-charge, Department of
Extra Mural Studies and Distance Education on or before July 31, 2020. In any case no cash transactions
will be made at the Institute.

Dispatch of self instruction course materials to the students by post: The self-instructional course study
materials are sent to the students in four lots by post/courier services. The materials include instructions for self-
study and self-assessment exercises (assignments).

Contact programmes in the Institute: Every year contact programme of two-weeks duration is organized in the
Institute in the month of June/July. During the contact programme a thorough feedback on the course material
sent throughout the year is given in addition to the laboratory exercises related to technical papers, computer
applications and preparation of term paper.

Evaluation & Examinations: Written examination is conducted twice in a year (June and December) at the
Institute. The written examination is followed by preparation of a Term
Paper and Viva-Voce examination. The evaluation is done by direct grading system. In order to qualify the
degree, a student is required to write an examination for 68 credits papers apart from the non-credited excluding
papers. Overall there are 17 papers designed for this course.
