THE NORMAL DISTRIBUTION

1. If X is N(75,100), find P(x<60) and P(70<X<100).

𝑋−𝜇
2. If X is 𝑁(𝜇, 𝜎 2 ), find b so that 𝑃 (−𝑏 < < 𝑏) = 0.90.
𝜎
3. Let X be 𝑁(𝜇, 𝜎 2 ) so that P(X<89)=0.90 and P(X<94)=0.95.
Find µ and 𝜎 2 .
4. Determine the ninetieth percentile of the distribution, which
is N(65,25).
5. Find the percentage of the normally distributed data that lies
within 2 standard deviations of the mean.
6. At the New Age Information Corporation, the ages of all new
employees hired during the last 5 years are normally
distributed. Within this curve, 95.44% of the ages, centered
about the mean, are between 24.6 and 37.4 years. Find the
mean age and the standard deviation of the data.
7. The amount of time that Carlos plays video games in any
given week is normally distributed. If Carlos plays video
games an average of 15 hours per week, with a standard
deviation of 3 hours, what is the probability of Carlos playing
video games between 15 and 18 hours a week?
8. Professor Halen has 184 students in his college mathematics
lecture class. The scores on the midterm exam are normally
distributed with a mean of 72.3 and a standard deviation of
8.9. How many students in the class can be expected to
receive a score between 82 and 90? Express answer to
the nearest student.
9. A machine is used to fill soda bottles. The amount of soda
dispensed into each bottle varies slightly. Suppose the
amount of soda dispensed into the bottles is normally
distributed. If at least 99.74% of the bottles must have
between 585 and 595 milliliters of soda, find the greatest
standard deviation, to the nearest hundredth, that can be
allowed.
