The harm done by infectious diseases (especially neglected tropical diseases such as malaria,

trypanosomiasis, trachoma etc.) worldwide cannot be overemphasized. Many of these diseases

were the main cause of morbidity and mortality at some point because of lack of adequate
knowledge on their prevention and control.
