PROBLEM 2 - A simply supported beam has a length of 5 m.

The top flanges at the midspan and at the supports are

laterally braced. The beam is an A36 Steel W310 × 179 wide flange with the following properties.

Properties:
d = 333 mm
tw = 18 mm
bf = 312 mm
tf = 28.2 mm
Ix = 445 × 106 mm4
Sx = 2670 × 103 mm3
Fy = 248 MPa
E = 200 GPa

1. Determine the value of rt = of the wide flange. rt is the radius of gyration of a section
comprising the compression flange plus 1/3 of the compression web area, taken about an axis in the plane
of the web.
