1.0 Projects

During the week, you will be working in teams of around 20 students, with each team
constructing a scale models of one of the four existing structures shown below:

1.1 Team A - The Ravenspurn Platform

Ravenspurn North is a North Sea gravity gas platform off the Humber estuary. Designed by Ove Arup, it was
built on Teeside at Graythorp for BP. It was the platform that established the viability of concrete gravity
structures and showed a different way forward from the US approach.

Your version will be a concrete caisson 4m square and 1.5m high with a steel scaffold superstructure and
plywood platform. You will build this in a dry dock and then float it to position on the 2m deep lake. You will
need to sink the platform to the “seabed” in order to complete the project.

1.2 Team B - The Kingsgate Bridge

The Kingsgate Footbridge was designed by Ove Arup in 1967 and is a great example of a ‘simple concept
elegantly expressed’. It connects Durham University and the town centre across a steep gorge and had tight
financial constraint - an economical, simple solution was essential.

Your scaled version of the bridge has an overall span of 10m, and consists of two precast segments
supported on rotating steel frames which rest on concrete piers in the river bed.

UCL Constructionarium 2019

1.3 Team C - The Brewery Wharf Bridge

The Brewery Wharf footbridge was designed by Ove Arup and partners and constructed in 1992. It was
originally built to connect ‘The Calls’ of Leeds city centre to a new visitors' centre for the Tetley’s
Brewery. Since then the area has had further change attracting both residential and commercial
developments.

Your scale model has a 10m clear span, a two-section precast deck and the cables connect to a 4m high
slanting concrete A-frame.

1.4 Team D - The Millau Viaduct

This 2460m long cable stay-bridge is on the A75 motorway between Clermont-Ferrand and Béziers in southern
France. It stands some 275m above the Tarn River and consumed 72,000m 3 of concrete, containing 26,200
tonnes of reinforcing steel, and 40,600 tonnes of structural steel.

Your scaled version will have an end span of 5m and middle span of 5m, 2 concrete piers (3.4m high) and 2
steel pylons (3m high) with deck 1.5m wide (plywood). The challenge, apart from scale, will be to launch the
two halves of the deck from each side, on schedule.

2.0 Roles and Responsibilities

2.1 General Overview

Your team will act as the contractor for your project, and your task is to construct your structure
according to the drawings and specifications provided. All your construction activities will be
under the overall supervision of Laing O’Rourke/Expanded (contractor), who will be running
the site and providing all equipment and materials. Waterman (consultants), will also be on
site to check that your structures are being constructed as per the engineers’ requirements
and to provide general advice and assistance. UCL staff will also be present during the week
to ensure projects remain on schedule, provide general guidance and ensure student’s
wellbeing. Any questions regarding any aspect of the fieldcourse should be directed to an
appropriate a member of the onsite supervisory team or if in doubt to a UCL staff member.

Constructionarium seeks to model the activities of a full-scale construction project. Each

student team will act as the contractor for their structure, following the typical procedures of
Laing O’Rourke. Each team will be provided with the contract documents (drawings and
specifications) for their structure, and the completed structure is to be handed over at the end
of the fieldcourse.

The field course is a complex operation, and this is only one of a number of relevant documents,
which also include (among others):

 The Team Lists for all projects

 The Timetable for the preparatory week and the construction week
 The Drawings for each project
 The Engineers’ Requirements document for each project
 The Schedule of Rates for all the projects
 Templates and forms for the contractor’s Method Statements, Task Sheets, Site
Waste Management Plans, Health and Safety plan, Risk Assessments and Permits

These documents will be made available to you at various stages and will be available on
Moodle prior to the start of the fieldcourse. Make sure to bring copies of these documents in
an external drive for your use and reference during construction week.

2.2 Ownership of site

You will need to compete the NCC induction on the Sunday. This will cover NCC’s Health and
Safety, safe walking routes, behavioural policies on alcohol & drugs and restaurant
arrangements. In addition, the risk assessments and method statements will need to be
approved by the Laing O’Rourke staff prior to any works commencing on site. Timing is a critical
element to the success of your project.

You will need to take ownership of the site before any work can start on site. This is
managed through the Constructionarium’s Site Manager. There is a check list of items to be
confirmed are in place before the event can start. This needs to be signed by all parties. At the
end of the week, the checklist will need to be re-evaluated and signed off again, formally
handing the site back to Constructionarium Ltd. Any damages, clean up or missing items will
need to be agreed before leaving site.

UCL Constructionarium 2019

2.3 Tender review + Contract meeting

On the Sunday we arrive each team will present there tender plans to the Waterman, Laing
O’Rourke and Constructinoarium staff. This should include
 Project overview
 Schedule of work
 Financial matters

Each evening, teams will contract reviews meetings with Waterman, Laing O’Rourke and
Constructinoarium staff to review the days progress. The “Client” will be seeking information
from the teams with regard to H&S issues, financial matter and progress against the agreed
project programme. It is anticipates that the meeting last about half an hour
 Project overview
 H&S issues
 Progress to date
 Any project issues
 Financial matters

2.4 Students team structure and roles

Each project team is divided into a number of sub-teams of varying size following the below
schematic. At the end of this document you will find a Project Team Roles template that needs
to be completed electronically and a rota of additional tasks that each group need to complete.

General points
 Although you will be allocated a specific role, you should not limit your activities to
these roles during the construction week. For example members of the planning team
should participate in construction activities (steel fixing, concrete pouring etc.) and vice
versa, as circumstances dictate. You should have the chance to experience the full
range of activities available.
 Although there are clearly nominated managers within the teams, there will be the
chance for all students to lead, manage and be responsible for the completion of
various subtasks during the course of the week; again we wish to encourage that.
UCL Constructionarium 2019

2.7 UCL staff

UCL staff members are responsible for monitoring the general performance of the construction
teams. They are available for advice on all issues relating to construction and the
accommodation at the National Construction College at no costs to contract. Please note that
during the fieldcourse Laing O’Rourke/Expanded staff have overall responsibility for all
construction activities.

3.0 Working on the Constructionarium site

3.1 Identification
You will be issued with name badges/hard hat and these need to
be worn at all times during the week whilst on the
Constructionarium site. This helps the on-site team to build
rapport with delegates/students and also helps monitor health and
safety practices.
CITB will also issue yellow lanyards which contain the restaurant
meal cards. The lanyards must be worn at all times irrespective if
you are on the Constructionarium site, within the grounds of the
National Construction College or in the restaurant. The yellow
lanyards signify that the delegate is with Constructionarium.
CITB will also issue wrist bands to delegates who have shown
proof of ID so alcohol can be purchased in the bar. No alcohol will
be served to delegates who are not wearing a wrist band.

3.2 Health and Safety

A major aim of the fieldcourse is, for you, to understand and comply with the health and safety
aspects of design and construction. For the safety of yourself and others on the
Constructionarium site, the site and all its occupants will be subject to the full rigour of the legal

3.2 Risk Assessments

Because of the nature of the Constructionarium site and of the individual projects, a number of
risk assessments either have been or will be produced from different perspectives:

The designer of each of the projects will produce a Method Statement

The Designer
and Risk Assessment.
As temporary owners of the Constructionarium, Laing
The
O’Rourke/Expanded will produce an overall Health and Safety plan for
Contractor
the site.
As the “contractor” for your project, you will need to submit a Method
Each Project Statement and Risk Analysis for the project as a whole and
Team subsequently for each activity to Laing O’Rourke/Expanded for approval
prior to commencing that activity.

3.3 Site Organisation

Each project team must contribute fully to the practical organisation of the Constructionarium
site. These responsibilities include:

 On the Friday prior to leaving site: clearing up your project site, clearing out and final
cleaning of your site hut, clearing up the wider site and cleaning the tools and store hut and
(if your team is allocated) the final cleaning of the toilets.

3.4 Resource planning

It is important to control the use of materials on site; this is the responsibility of the Cost
Manager within each project team. Teams will be required to submit a “Material Requisition
Form” to Laing O’Rourke/Expanded when anything is required from the site store or from
supplies (e.g. concrete). When necessary you should allow time for delivery. The site store
will be open during working hours.

3.5 First Aid

Laing O’Rourke/Expanded have personnel qualified in first aid, they are identified
