wrappers around you.

Attendance officer, is everybody present? : Yes, sir!

Very Good! Maintain your perfect attendance class!

B. Review

Let us also check your memory. What did you learn : Sir, yesterday we discussed about figurative
yesterday? language. Wherein it presents ordinary things in
fresh ways, communicating ideas that go beyond
words’ ordinary meanings. Which means that it has
a deeper meaning aside from its literal meaning.

That’s right! Angeline, can you tell us the five figures : We discussed about simile, metaphor, alliteration,
of speech we discussed? repetition and hyperbole.
February 1, 2018

Wow! You really have a good memory. It seems that

you understood our previous topic. Are you ready for
our next topic?

: Yes, sir!
C. Motivation

This time, I am going to read a spoken word. Close

your eyes and listen as I render the poem as I will be
asking some questions later. Understood?

Now, close your eyes and feel the moment. : Yes, sir. We understood.

(Teacher reads the spoken word)

There is a woman who has been loving me even

before the day I was born,
A woman who was left sleepless from dusk till dawn
just to let me feel –that I’m not alone.
A woman who had the greatest patience teaching me
how to speak and guided me with my first step when
my knees were still weak.
A woman with no golden voice but protected from
mosquito’s noise and sang every time I couldn’t
sleep like performing at her 24-hour shift.
A woman with the weakest feet but in taking care of
me, thanks GOD she did not quit
What a sacrifice it is that no word in this world could
ever suffice
That’s how a mother loves.
And it was sacrifice when she let the me use her
slippers for my feet not to get hurt
and gave her blanket to keep me warm every night.
It was sacrifice when she said that it’s okay when I
said, mom I am gay
It was sacrifice when she gave me her food instead of
eating for her own good
It was sacrifice when she told me a lie, saying son,
eat your food I have eaten mine
It was sacrifice when she said I’m okay when in fact
she was not for I know, in silence her tears fall into
flood
It was sacrifice
It was sacrifice when she chose to wash other
peoples’ dirty clothes even her hands get sores just to
buy me new shoes and trendy clothes
It was sacrifice when she said I’m sorry when she
once beat me because I was naughty are you really
the one who should be SORRY?
It was sacrifice when she sold her inherited ring for
the sake of my schooling
It was sacrifice when she chose to stay with her
irresponsible and brutal husband for her children not
to have a broken home.
And it is sacrifice every time she wakes up early
preparing the food for her family to eat every
morning even her body is aching.
It is sacrifice every time she shows not her tears, but
I feel the ache inside
It is sacrifice every time pain she hides for often we
see her smile
But I know deep in silence she cries, and I feel so
sorry for letting those tears fall from her eyes.
And most importantly, it was the biggest sacrifice
when she chose when she chose to become a mother.
It was sacrifice and it’s all because of love.
And to the woman who did it all for me, Thank you.
February 1, 2018

Thank you. Thank You for emptying your hands just

to fill my cup and for doing all these things without
asking for any reward. Your sacrifices all these years
is just hard to ignore I can’t live without you for sure.
And if ever that I get married, I promise that you will
always be my queen.

And I’m sorry …

I’m sorry for all the sacrifices you made that
sometimes ignored, Sorry for not saying I’m sorry
every time you scold.
I’m sorry that you have to sacrifice your life for me
to survive.
And I’m sorry for not telling you I love you too even
you show me how much you DO.
Sorry for not doing my chores and for letting you
wash my dirty clothes
Sorry for waking you up when I couldn’t sleep.
I love you mom and I’m Sorry and sorry again for all
these pains.
I promise to make it up to you until you get old.
My love for you may not be seen but if ever I get
married, I promise that you will forever be my queen.

Very Good!

Today, we will be dealing with TONE and THEME.

E. Discussion / Analysis

Yesterday, I introduced a poem entitled Africa. Let us

read it again.

Africa by David Diop

Africa my Africa
Africa of proud warriors in ancestral savannahs
Africa of whom my grandmother sings
On the banks of the distant river
I have never known you
But your blood flows in my veins
Your beautiful black blood that irrigates the fields
The blood of your sweat
The sweat of your work
The work of your slavery
Africa, tell me Africa
Is this your back that is unbent
This back that never breaks under the weight of
humiliation
This back trembling with red scars
And saying no to the whip under the midday sun
But a grave voice answers me
Impetuous child that tree, young and strong
February 1, 2018

That tree over there

Splendidly alone amidst white and faded flowers
That is your Africa springing up anew
springing up patiently, obstinately
Whose fruit bit by bit acquires
The bitter taste of liberty.
What do you think is the feeling or emotion expressed
by the persona or the author of the poem?
Look at these lines:
Africa my Africa
Africa of proud warriors in ancestral savannahs
Africa of whom my grandmother sings
On the banks of the distant river
I have never known you : The author or the persona of the poem feels proud.
But your blood flows in my veins

That’s correct!

Why do you think the author is proud? : because he keeps on saying Africa and he used
the pronoun my which implies that he is from
Africa and he feels proud of it.

Correct!

How about in these lines?

Your beautiful black blood that irrigates the fields

The blood of your sweat
The sweat of your work
The work of your slavery
Africa, tell me Africa
Is this your back that is unbent
This back that never breaks under the weight of
humiliation
This back trembling with red scars
And saying no to the whip under the midday sun

What is the feeling or emotion of the persona or : The author is grieving. Because of the humiliation
author? his fellow Africans experienced before.
Absolutely!

How about here, what is the attitude of the author

based from these lines?

But a grave voice answers me

Impetuous child that tree, young and strong
That tree over there
Splendidly alone amidst white and faded flowers
That is your Africa springing up anew
springing up patiently, obstinately
Whose fruit bit by bit acquires
The bitter taste of liberty. : The author is hopeful.

Why? : Because despite humiliation, they will still raise

and soon be freed.
That’s right!
Now, you have said that the author is proud, grieving
and hopeful. That is actually the tone in the poem.
Based from this, who can give me the definition of
tone? : Tone is the attitude of the author on his writing.

Exactly!
February 1, 2018

Tone class, in written composition, is an attitude of a

writer toward a subject or an audience. Tone is
generally conveyed through the choice of words, or
the viewpoint of a writer on a particular subject.

Every written piece comprises a central theme or

subject matter.

A theme is a central message revealed through

a literary work. It is a lesson that the selection teaches
or a major point that the selection as a whole is about.
It is a generalization about people or about life that is
communicated through the literary work.

On the other hand, the manner in which a writer

approaches this theme and subject is the tone. The tone
can be formal, informal, serious, comic, sarcastic, sad,
or cheerful, or it may be any other existing attitude.

Who can give me the theme of the poem? : The theme of the poem is about the love of your
homeland
Very good!

The poem mainly talks about “Patriotism” and hope

for freedom.

Did you understand our topic today, Darwin? : Yes, sir!
