Ionic Compound

KCl
Name: Salt
History: Potassium chloride (also known as KCl or potassium salt) is a metal
halide salt composed of potassium and chlorine. It is odorless and has a white
or colorless vitreous crystal appearance. The solid dissolves readily in water and its solutions have
a salt-like taste. KCl is used as a fertilizer,[7] in medicine, in scientific applications, and in food
processing, where it may be known as E number additive E508.

Formation: When the two atoms are in contact, potassium readily transfers
its outer electron to chlorine which readily accepts it, resulting in both atoms achieving a
state of eight outermost electrons. With this electron transfer, the ionic bond
in KCl is formed.

SIgnaficance: Potassium chloride is used to prevent or to treat

low blood levels of potassium(hypokalemia). Potassium levels can be low as a result
of a disease or from taking certain medicines, or after a prolonged illness with diarrhea
or vomiting.

Covalent Compound

CH4
Name: Fuel
History: Volta collected the gas rising from the marsh, and by 1778 had
isolated the pure gas. He also demonstrated that the gas could be ignited with an
electric spark. The name "methane" was coined in 1866 by the German chemist August
Wilhelm von Hofmann. The name was derived from methanol.

Formation: Formation of methane molecule (CH4 ) Methane (CH4 ) is a

covalent compound containing covalent bonds. Carbon atom has atomic number 6. Its
electronic configuration is 2,4.

Significance: Methane (CH ) is a hydrocarbon that is a primary

component of natural gas. ... Because methane is both a powerful greenhouse gas and
short-lived compared to carbon dioxide, achieving significant reductions would have a
rapid and significanteffect on atmospheric warming potential.
