DIFFERENCES

1-ASTM uses A while ASME uses SA

2-ASTM uses dates, ASME is without dates, a
different system is used
Rules, where found.
Rules for selection of applicable Material Specifications, Edition and Addenda
are provided in the FORWARD. " After Code revisions are approved by
ASME. They may be used beginning with the date of issuance
shown on the Addenda. -----ASME material
specifications approved for use in each construction Code are listed in
Appendices of Section II, Parts A and B. These Appendices list, for each
specification, the latest edition adopted by ASME, and earlier and later editions
considered by ASME to be identical for ASME construction."

The Edition and Addenda of the Code to be used is based on the Contract
Received Date for the ASME Code constructed product.
Code as published six months before the contract date.
This date will establish the Edition and Addenda of ASME Code Section II to
be used.
Code material requirements are
located in:
ASME Foreword
■ Materials produced to standards other than SA or SB may be
identical or similar to materials included in Section II.
■ These "other" materials may be used when permitted by the
construction Code section.

■ When parts subject to stresses as a result of pressure (either
internal or external) are furnished by other than the location of
the responsible vessel Manufacturer, such parts
■ shall meet all requirements of this Division,
■ require inspection in the shop of the parts Manufacturer,
■require Partial Data Reports EXCEPT as permitted in (a), (b)
or(c)
■(a) Cast, forged, rolled, or die formed standard pressure parts
(such as pipe fittings, flanges, nozzles, welding necks, welding
caps, manhole frames and covers).
■(b) Cast, forged, rolled, or die formed nonstandard pressure
parts (shells, heads, removable doors and pipe coils).
■(c) Welded standard pressure parts for use
other than the shell or heads of a vessel (welded standard pipe
fittings, welding caps and flanges where welding complies with
this Division).
