Application: TABS6 Trailer System

Modulator Tools: Volt Ohm Meter

Diagnostic Trouble Codes Knowledge of: VOM use

CODES: Open, short to ground, short to Vbat

CAUSE: Wiring damage between modulator and ECU.
LOOK FOR: Chafed wires, damaged/corroded wires, pins, connectors, wires cut against frame, body, screws,
bent or missing connector pins. Note: drifting volt ohm readings can indicate corrosion.

1. Power on, use diagnostic software, tool or blink codes to identify modulator diagnostic trouble codes. Power off.

2. Remove connector from ECU as needed. Find problem modulator pins using drawing below. Set VOM to
ohms Ω scale. Resistance must be stable - no drifting of VOM readings permitted. Enter the measured
values in the spaces below.
3. Measure ohms (Ω) from hold to common. Spec: 3-8 Ω Actual: ______ Ω
4. Measure ohms (Ω) from release to common. Spec: 3-8 Ω Actual: ______ Ω
5. Measure ohms (Ω) from release to exhaust.. Spec: 6-16 Ω Actual: ______ Ω

6. Measure Ω from each of the three pins to Ground (X1 Pin 18). Spec: infinite (OL) resistance Actual: ____ Ω
7. Measure Ω from each of the three pins to Power (X1 Pin 6 or 12). Spec: infinite (OL) resistance Actual: ____ Ω
8. Any of steps 3-7 failed the spec? Go to step 9 to determine if issue is wiring or component.

All of steps 3-7 passed OK? Continue with step 8.

If test 3-7 passed, wet vehicle OEM harness. Assistant flexes wet modulator wire harness.
Repeat step 3-7 while OEM harness is wet and being flexed.

9. Step 8 passed OK? Continue with step 9.

Step 8 failed? Find damage in vehicle OE wiring harness.

Repeat steps 3 - 7 right on the modulator pins itself. Resistance specs are exactly the same as above.
Step 9 failed? Replace modulator valve.
