Wheel Speed Sensor Application: TABS6 Trailer ABS

Diagnostic Trouble Codes Tools: Volt Ohm Meter Knowledge of VOM use

CODES: Sensor open or shorted

CAUSE: Wiring damage between sensor and ECU.
LOOK FOR: Chafing wires, overly tight or loose harness, wires cut against frame, body, screws, bent or
missing connector pins, corroded pins or connectors. Drifting ohm readings can indicate corrosion.
Static Sensor DTC’s

1. Power on, use diagnostic software, tool or blink codes to find problem - Step 4 - - Step 5 -
sensor. Power off.
OL OL
2. Remove appropriate connector from ECU. Find problematic
sensors pins. Set VOM to ohms “Ω” scale. Resistance must be
stable - no drifting of VOM readings permitted. Write values below. Ω Ω
Note that resistance values assume 12V Electrical System
WIRES DRY: FLEXED&WET:
3. Measure Ω across pins. (Example shown probes right rear sensor.)

NOTE: Sensor models could have resistance value as low as 950 Ω 18 - Way 18 - Way
Pin 18 Pin 6 or 12
4. Measure Ω from each of the two pins to Ground (Connector X1 Ground Power

5. Measure Ω from each of the two pins to Power. (Connector X1

______ Ω ______ Ω

6. Test 3-5 not OK? Go to step 7. Test 3-5 OK? Continue step 8. Ω
If test 3-5 passed, wet harness. Assistant flexes wet sensor wire
harness from wheel to ECU connector. Repeat step 3-5.
7. Repair / Replace sensor of wire harness
8. Check sensor output per instruction on Page 2

Wheel Speed Sensor Application: TABS6 Trailer ABS

Diagnostic Trouble Codes Tools: Volt Ohm Meter Knowledge of VOM use

CODES: Large air gap, loss of signal, noisy sensor signal

CAUSE: Poor speed signals to ECU.
LOOK FOR: Check for corroded / damaged wiring or connectors between the ECU and WSS, excessive
gap, exciter ring run-out, improper bearing adjustment, wire rubbing or chafing, loose sensor clip,
non-twisted pair wires, electrical noise on sensor wires.
Bendix recommends twisted pair sensor harnesses to cancel electrical noise
Dynamic Sensor DTC’s
ü Best practice: perform “Sensor Static Fault ” checks and repairs prior to beginning Dynamic checks.

4. Measure VAC output from sensor.

1. Power on, use blink code switch,
Example below is for right steer sensor.
diagnostic software or diagnostic tool to
Minimum sensor output: .25 volts AC.
determine DTC of the sensor.
OK? è go to 5.
Power off.
Not OK? è Regap sensor.
Is output ZERO? è Go to Static
2. Lift problem wheel end with floor jack. .25 VAC Sensor Faults
Wheel must spin freely by hand.
Remove connector which sensor is or greater 5. Assistant spins wheel as fast as

TABLE 1. Total Air Gap:
Measure with feeler gauge, clock wheel at 90 degree
increments:
12:00 position _____
3:00 position _____
6:00 position _____
9:00 position _____
The average of these measurement is the “average gap”.
Ideal average gap = .000-.005” - good -
Excessive gap = .020”+ - must re-gap -
Total Gap = Bump back from wheel bearing end play +
run-out of exciter ring. Push sensor to contact exciter ring.
Excess bearing end play & exciter ring
run-out cause sensor faults.
Other factors contributing to dynamic sensor faults include:
Loose sensor bushing, sensor wires that are too short for
vehicle, poorly tied wires ice/snow pulling back on sensor
wire.
Always manually gap the sensor at ZERO. Allow a minimal
amount of wheel end bump back and run-out set the
resulting gap as close as possible.

TABLE 2. Exciter Ring Runout:

Measure gap every 90 degrees. Start with zero gap at the sensor. Turn hub through one
complete revolution. Then clock the hub at ninety degree
increments and measure the variation in gap using dial indicator
or feeler gauge:
12:00 position _____
3:00 position _____
6:00 position _____
9:00 position _____
Subtract the highest number from the lowest number you
measured above. Difference is “total runout” in thousandths
inch:
______ total runout.
Ideal total runout = .000”
In-spec total runout = .000 - 007”
Excess total runout = .008” or more - repair exciter -
