to the Nextera representatives,
only occurs for half an hour
or so in the morning and eve-
ning when the sun is in a spe-
cific location. Another concern
brought up by CAT representa-
tives was land being returned
to original tillable ground after
the possibility of the project
being discontinued. Concerns
were also expressed about the
value of land next to the farms.

The quotes were for soft-
ware and equipment to read
the meters, as well as the initial
purchase of 80 meters with the
remote read capabilities. Com-
panies submitting quotes were
also asked to price out the pur-
chase of 300 additional meters
in 2011 and 2012. Diller added
that town employees would do
all the installations, saving the
village that expense.
On December 8, Diller and
Ryan Thien, Utility Superinten-
dent, will be conducting a test of
the system proposed by Dreier
& Maller of Columbus, who

“With them you can get
$3-$5 million grants for a
project. This program allows
regions to put together a
plan to be used for USDA
or EDA grants.”

Cavs wrap up stellar football season
A dream season came to
an end for Coldwater’s high
school football team Saturday
afternoon as the Cavaliers came
up short in their bid for a state
championship with a 51-21
defeat to Youngstown Ursuline
at Fawcett Stadium.
However, the contest also
brought to an end the stellar
careers for 14 Cavalier seniors
that saw Coldwater participate
in three state championship
games in their four year
careers.
Saturday, the Fighting Irish
was just too much for the
orange and black as Ursuline
ran for 492 yards on 61 tries in
posting the victory.
Senior running back Akise
Teague, Mr. Football in Ohio,
ran for 192 yards on 13 carries
with three touchdowns in the
first half to lead the way for
Ursuline. Teague finished the
day with 249 yards and four
scores on 19 carries and 405
all-purpose yards.
Teague opened the scoring
with a 73-yard pass from
quarterback Paul Kempe to
get the Fighting Irish on the
board at the 10:52 mark. Paul
Podolsky’s run for the two-
point conversion gave Ursuline
an 8-0 lead.
Coldwater answered on its

training programs do they
need? How are we going to
retain these businesses over
the long term? If we can put
that information together
and go to our legislators as
a region, we can say ‘Here
are the dominant issues.’”
Bowen pointed out it was a
significant accomplishment
just to be included in the
SET program. The local
group is one of only two
regions chosen in Ohio
and only 22 nationwide to
participate. She said they
needed to apply with the
USDA, and it was a very
competitive process.

the group still has a lot of
work in front of them but

success will be to a growing
regional economy.
“It is all about the
leverage as a region that
we will have versus what
we can do as individual
counties,” she said. “We
really feel that collectively
we will be able to bring
in those projects. We are
a lot more apt to land
something as a region than
we would be as individual
counties. Working together
is important.”

Tractor Pulling Association, the
Fort recovery Ambassadors
were named Grand National
Pull of the Year. This is the
third time that Fort recovery
has received this award as the
best operated Pull across the
United States and Canada.
During the 73rd annual
National FFA Convention,
Leslie Bowen received her
American FFA Degree, the
highest award any member may
receive. Bowen is a member of
the Parkway FFA Chapter and
is the daughter of Steve and
Jane Bowen of rockford.

Do you think the President
is feeling better about the
economy? If he does, he
needs to see the latest unem-
ployment rate. 9.8% is noth-
ing to take lightly. Nearly 10
people out of 100 are out of
work. Compare that to the
“Great Depression” figure of
25% and you can see how
bad things can get. While no
one wants to go down the
depression road again, things
had better start changing soon.
One can only hope this new
change in Congress will start
to turn things around. It will
be interesting to see how
the voting will go with the
Earmarks issue after the first
of the year. As much as I
would like to see the Earmarks
issue pass, I don’t think it will.
There is just so much pressure
from back home to keep the
earmarks coming back to the
home states.
I trust everyone had a great
Thanksgiving and all the tur-
key you could eat. The only
problem with having turkey
is all the leftovers you have
to eat for the next week. It is
amazing just how many ways
you can serve turkey. Now the
big thing is all that Christmas
shopping that you have to do.
Let’s just hope things pick up
work wise and this will be a
profitable season for all the
merchants.
By the way, if you are
thinking of sending packages
to the men and women in the
armed services, you had bet-
ter get busy. Time passes so
quickly and you know how
long it takes to get mail over-
seas. Until next week, don’t
forget to hug those kids and
tell them how much you love
them. O, yes, say a prayer

The Tax Man Cometh
Scanning world news suggests
the US faces staggering challeng-
es. Fiscally, reducing trillion dollar
deficits without gutting the economy.
Technologically, catching up for ex-
ample with China, that just set a
new high speed rail record of 302
mph between Beijing and Shangai
– Ohio’s rail plan called for speeds
of…we won’t go there. Business-
wise, ramping up lagging innova-
tiveness. Educationally, keep from
dropping to the bottom of the devel-
oped world.
Closer to home, Mr. Kasich faces
an $8B deficit, likely to translate
into 10-20 percent cuts in Ohio aid
to K-12 schools. Call this an early
2011 wake up call; for a change get
ahead of the tsunami before it crash-
es on shore.
Education promises to dispro-
portionately impact local scenes, be-
cause school taxes already constitute
a major tax bite of households. For
the systems in this region they may
already be out of line. New Bre-
men’s school tax, for example, ex-
ceeds that of far larger and more in-
tellectually capable systems in metro
areas. Unless the game plan changes
from history, that Ohio shortfall will
result in another round of proposed
levies with the tearful mantra, “…
but it’s for the children.” Problem

extracurricular froth; and learning
can now bypass many conventional
classrooms by using distance tech-
niques currently accounting for up to
a quarter of effective learning.
System parameters aren’t im-
mune: K-12 organization based on
seat-time is a century old and obso-
lete, in need of rethinking; teachers
are not empowered to call the shots
in their classrooms rather than fol-
lowing bureaucratic mandates; sadly,
school bureaucrats can become auto-
crats, gathering around them boards
too compliant to question strategies

This book, Troy and the
Championship Trophy, came to
my attention when I googled the
author’s name, Roxanne Price.
I found Price an interesting
person with several important
titles with the OHSAA. Roxanne
fascinated me as she awarded
the championship trophy to the
Coldwater Cavaliers Football
team after they won the 2007
state championship game. I was
taken by her enthusiastic, positive
voice as she awarded the two
top teams kind and encouraging
words for their work. During
my search, I also learned she
wrote this book for children.
On www.amazon.com, I found
the book and purchased it for
my grandchildren for Christmas
that year.
Troy and the Championship
Trophy could have been written
with the Coldwater Football
team in mind. In this book,
Ms. Price teaches to play as a
team rather than as individuals
and the importance of a good
attitude. Coldwater does just
that. She says it is not whether
you win or lose, but how you
play the game. She encourages
good sportsmanship and insists
that fans remain calm, fair and
not be rude. Ever.
The Coldwater Library has

Trophy in the children’s section
and I encourage adults and
good towards a purchase of
young athletes alike to read it.

holscher and his wife
elizabeth, both longtime
local residents and retired
teachers from Parkway
high School, recently
made a trip to Springfield,
Pennsylvania, holscher’s
high school alma mater,
where he was honored by
the Springfield High School
Alumni Sports hall of Fame.
though he participated in
all sports, he was a four-
time varsity letter winner
in track and co-captain his
senior year. he was the
Suburban class B half mile
and mile champion in both
his junior and senior years
as well. the previous fall at
huntington, holscher ran
cross country, winning all
his team’s dual meets and
being named All Delaware
county, qualifying for the
district championships and
running in the state cross
country championships.
in 1954, he was on his
high school’s mile relay
team in the prestigious
Penn relays at university
of Pennsylvania. he also
competed at the college
level for West chester State
university.
Parkway high School
graduate Brandi DuBry
recently joined hall realty.
She is a graduate of the
ohio State university and
received her real estate
license from hondros
college. She is now a

top senior mathematics
student in each West
central ohio high school
for their achievements
in mathematic courses
throughout high school.

Joy Gamble Koch and
travis Bates, Parkway
high School graduates,
were inducted into the
huntington university
hall of Fame recently.
Koch was honored for her
significant contributions
to the Forester women’s
volleyball and basketball
programs between 1986
and 1990, and Bates for his
significant contribution to
the Forester track and field
program during those same
years.
Koch also set significant
records in volleyball and
basketball at huntington.
She helped lead the program
to three mcc conference
titles, four consecutive
nAiA district postseason
tournament appearances
and 127 wins against 38
losses, and the Foresters
won the 1988 nccAA
national championship,
just to mention a few
of her and her team’s
accomplishments.
Bates dominated the
competition in track and
field as a thrower, especially
in discus. As a junior, he
claimed the nAiA District
21 title, breaking the
huntington university and
nccAA meet records as
well. he helped lead the
team to four mcc team
championships and was a
four-time all-conference
selection and two-time
team mVP.

christmas with the Van
Wert Boys choir at St.
Paul’s united church of
christ, (corner of oregon
and Wabash roads), on
Sunday at 3 p.m. A love
offering will be taken to
support the Boys choir and

An old issue, but…
coldwater high School
reported to the State Athletic
Association in october of
2008 that they would have
161 boys enrolled in grades
10 - 12 for the next school
year. ursuline high School,
located in youngstown, ohio,
reported 173 boys enrolled
for that same period. it does
seem fair that in tournament
football competition schools
with approximately similar
enrollment numbers should
compete against each other.
if there were no class system
in the ohio Football Playoffs,
coldwater or Delphos St. John’s
could have faced teams like
huber heights’ Wayne high
School, which has 859 boys
enrolled in the top three grades
and is some fifty miles to the
south. Players from Division
i football schools in ohio, a
minimum of 518 boys in the top
three grades, do not necessarily
have bigger or better athletes
than players from schools that
have fifty boys or less in a
grade. the homan men from
coldwater, hoying men from
St. henry, Jeff hartings, and
Jim lachey to name a few,
demonstrated small town
players could compete with
and even dominate athletes
from any school of any size in
the country.
the “fairness issue” of
school size essentially involves
the number of eligible boys
in the school from which the
coach may recruit his football
team. For example, Wayne, an
average size Division i school,
has five times as many boys as
coldwater to compete for each
football position. the guy that
can draw five times as many
cards as the next guy should
win the bet almost any card
game, or football game. there
does exist a very uncomfortable
issue with ohio high School
Athletic Association divisional
tournament play and it involves
private schools. the city of
youngstown has a population
of a little over 82,000.
Parents and students have
both public and private school
options in youngstown.
Attendance at ursuline and
other catholic schools is by
choice. most families choose
catholic education because of
academic excellence, religious
training, and sometimes
because of athletic excellence.
not every young man in
youngstown can choose
ursuline as his high School
however. There are financial
restraints, philosophical
differences, and other catholic
schools to attend in the city.
there is no doubt however,
the pool of potential football
players for youngstown
ursuline in a city of 82,000 is
much larger than coldwater’s,
with some 5000 people in the
school district, despite the fact
that ursuline has just twelve
more boys in school than
less than ten percent of that
number are private catholic
schools. But last weekend,
five of six championships
were won by private schools.
this was not an unusual year
in that regard. options to
address this “problem” have
not been well received. A
separate tournament for the
private and public schools
cheapens the meaning of a state
championship. there are some
who would say we give out
too many state championship
trophies already in football and
basketball.
the other option is to
forget about the somewhat
faulty concept of school size
altogether and have everybody
in one tournament. this
would effectively eliminate
most schools from any chance
of tournament success, but
someone always reminds us
of milan high School, with
161 students in grades 9-12,
winning the indiana basketball
championship versus big city
school, muncie central, in
1954. our ohio divisional
play has problems, but it did
allow the coldwater football
team to have its own “hoosier”
moment. A couple of years
ago, a youngstown team,
cardinal mooney, was placed
in a small school division, but
was widely recognized as the
best team in the state and had
votes as a ranked team in the
country. the system, perhaps
by mistake, allowed the cavs
to play and defeat the best
in the state that year. i am
still waiting for that movie or
book.
