Chapter 1
Problem and Background of the Study
1.1 Introduction
Bullying constitute a complex problem in school kids lives. It is a problem that affects all

students, either bullies or victims. Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school

aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated,

or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying may involve many sections verbal,

physical assaults, threats, jokes or language, and criticizing. All of such factors affect

individually, or collectively, and contributes in child’s bullying. It is well known that bullying

is difficult to eliminate or to stop it in schools because It is used by students. Alison (2016)

stated that bullying is considered as global problem that affect emotional, social, and physical

wellbeing of school-age children worldwide.

Bullying is a big problem now in our society and what’s alarming is the breeding ground

of this problem is our school. Our very own second home is the ground of the bullies.

Bullying can only be recognized when individual’s experience it. Bullying can happen at

anyone, anywhere at any age and anywhere whether at school or home.

A survey conducted revealed that bullying or abuse is experienced by one in two

Filipino school children. This statistics is backed up by a report in an Australian

newspaper involving 117,000 nine-year old’s from 25 different countries, stating that

50% of Filipino students are being bullied in school.. Also, Lai, et al. have affirmed

that students in the Philippines had led the record of different types of bullying,

which include being “made fun of or being called names,” “left out of activities by others,”

and “made to do things the student did not want to.”.

A group of people in the Philippines conducted a study about bullying.

(Secretary General on Violence against Children, 2019) Some of the initial findings of the

report denote that physical appearance – such as being overweight or having non-

conforming gender expressions–is the main driver for bullying. Race, nationality, and skin

color are also high on the list. In the report, religion was not highlighted as a major contri-

buting factor. While the term “bullying” covers physical, psychological and sexual

violence (understood In this context to mean sex-related mockery and gender-based

discrimination), the report said very little data are available on the psychological

occurrence of it, and countries must do more to gain a better understanding of this issue.

(Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence

against Children) emphasized the importance of early childhood prevention and noted that

the “parent-child relationship is a critical factor in predicting the risk of bullying in

adolescence.” According to the report, 176 million children under five witness domestic

violence on a regular basis at present and children who bully others are twice as likely to

have been exposed to domestic violence than other children. “Exposure to toxic stress,

domestic violence and a violent family environment has an irreversible impact on the

development of very young children,” Santos Pais said.

In the city of Davao, there are also cases about bullying that involves students in

Soledad R. Duterte National High School in Barangay Baliok, Talomo District. The report

said that At least 27 female Grade 7 students reportedly suffered hyperventilation after a

classmate, said to be a child in conflict with the law (CICL) reportedly threatened a female

classmate with a knife. The boy claimed his classmates, allegedly led by the girl he

threatened, bullied him since he stepped in the school last month. Based on the police

investigation, Talomo Police Precinct Commander Major Ronald Lao said Ian threatened
the girl, identified as Pam, with a six-inch knife. Lao said the two students engaged in an

argument a day earlier. Pam reportedly threw a notebook into Ian’s face. I an claimed Pam

and another femalestudent always bullied him.He said he was always the subject of ridicule

by his classmates, led by Pam ,and he already felt “so embarrassed.” The boy said he

brought the knife for self defense as he was afraid that Pam’s male friends would

physically harm him. Thankfully the problem was resolved without anyone injured or badly

hurt.

There are already many cases about bullying. There might also be an ongoing case

about bullying at this moment. Bullying is a WORLWIDE problem that needs immediate

attention. But, what exactly causes this type of aggressive and hurtful behavior to the

students? And how bullying affects the students? We, the researchers would like to

identify what causes bullying and how it will affects the students.
