Algebra 2 6-3A Polynomial Long Division

Obj: able to perform long division of polynomials

Long Division of Polynomials Serves as a Test to see if the Divisor is a Factor of the Dividend
x + 2 ← Quotient
Divisor → x + 1 x + 3 x + 2 ← Dividend
2
Notice, no remainder, so x + 1 is a factor of x + 3 x + 2 .
2

When dividing, write all polynomials in descending order.

If a term is missing in descending order, hold its place with a coefficient of zero.

Example ( x 2 + 5) ÷ ( x + 1) becomes x + 1 x 2 + 0x + 5
dividend remainder
Express answers in the form = quotient +
divisor divisor

Divide.
x 2 + 2x + 1
1. 52 674 2.
x +1

x 3 − 13x + 13
3. (4 x 2 − 6 + 4 x 3 − 7 x) ÷ (2 x + 3) 4.
x+4
