Bridging the cable industry’s skills gap

IN 1982, the total number of jobs in UK manufacturing was
nearly a quarter of the working population. Fast forward to
2002 and this figure dropped to 12 per cent. Recent
statistics show that the figure has now dropped to eight per
cent. This is not unique to the UK – all industrialised
countries, with the exception of Brazil, have seen
manufacturing jobs decline since the 1990s.

Over the last 20 years in particular, factories have

automated many tasks on the production line, which have
to some extent replaced jobs. Compared to the 1980s, there
are three million fewer jobs in manufacturing in the UK.

Government focus turned to industries which were seeing

an increase in the value of GDP output. As a result, funding

storm led to only one outcome – the creation of a workforce

to provide reliable customer support and a high standard
of after-sales service.

Nearly all mechanical, electrical and electronic

components are manufactured in-house, making Medek &
Schörner largely independent of external suppliers and
able to react to customer requirements quickly and
efficiently.

The company guarantees unlimited availability of spare

parts for all its machines, including older and smaller
models.

The product range begins with simple coding machines

and extends all the way to fully automated high-speed
production lines using cutting-edge technology.

Thanks to the modular construction, the capacity of any

system can be increased quickly and significantly by
adding or exchanging individual components, even if a
system has already been in operation for several years.

Cross country power

China has launched its longest extra-high voltage (EHV)
power transmission line, connecting the far western region
of Xinjiang with the eastern province of Anhui.

The 2,065 mile (3,324km) 1,100kV line is designed to

transmit 66 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year. The
project aims to help meet increasing power demand in
industrialised eastern regions and reduce the amount of
wasted electricity in the west. Most of the electricity
transmitted via the line will come from the Zhundong
coal-fired power plant in northern Xinjiang, which has an
installed power generation capacity of 28GW.

The National Energy Administration last September

approved 12 EHV transmission projects, aiming to bring
electricity generated by renewable power plants in western
China to the east and central regions.

Flexible cold welding solutions from PWM

MODERN cold welding machines are
versatile. They can be used to weld
non-ferrous wire, profile and rod, as well
as different types of material (for
example, copper to aluminium) and
materials with different diameters. The
process can also be used to bond strip.

PWM’s ST40 cold welder is designed

specifically for welding copper/
aluminium strip. The precision-engi-
neered machine can weld material with a
maximum width of 45mm and a
minimum thickness of 0.2mm –
depending on material properties.

Like all PWM machines, the ST40

produces reliable permanent bonds
stronger than the parent material without
loss of electrical integrity, helping
manufacturers avoid downtime, reduce
waste and improve productivity. No
set-up time is required, and the ST40 is
low maintenance and simple to operate.

Medium voltage
insulation – the evolution
MIXER SpA is a
compounder for medium
voltage insulation, with
a global presence.

Since 1996, the

company has prod-
uced MV compounds
based on EPDM and
EPDM/PE blends.

The strategy is to offer

innovative and comp-
etitive materials to the
cable market for new
applications.
❍ The range of Ekopren blends
An example of this is
that ten years ago the company developed and promoted fully
lead-free products, ahead of user demand.

Constantly seeking innovation and committed to providing

added value to customers, Mixer developed a new version of
medium voltage insulation, enabling faster and easier
production.

In addition, it created cost-efficient grades for applications up to

20kV.

Both those latest compounds and the standard ones are suitable
for operating temperatures of 90°C and 105°C and are compliant
to international standards.

Furthermore, several types of semi-conductive shields were

tested together with these grades for compatibility and
peelability, to offer a full ready-to-go solution to clients.

Two new blends were formulated, starting from the established

Ekopren® 3IS731. The first, Ekopren® 3IS73F, was optimised for
faster extrusion. Because of its decreased hardness, it avoids
scorch issues and presents higher flexibility.

The second, Ekopren® 3IS73L, responds to the need for a

voltage rating between 6 and 20kV, offering cost efficiency
combined with easy processing.

These improvements were also implemented on the lead-free

compound Ekopren® 3IS751, leading to the variants Ekopren®
3IS75F and Ekopren® 3IS75L.

Merging the experience of Mixer in MV products with the specific

needs of its customers, the company is now offering a wider
portfolio for this market segment.

The new grades enrich the selection of medium voltage

insulation suitable for EPR and HEPR specifications, which can
be harder or flexible, with or without lead and for operating
voltage from 6kV to 95kV.
