I. History
a. Peking opera is a form of traditional Chinese
theater which combines music, vocal
performance, mime, dance and acrobatics. It
arose in the late 18th century and became fully
developed and recognized by the mid-19th
century. The form was extremely popular in the
Qing Dynasty court and has come to be (students will listen)
regarded as one of the cultural treasures of
China.
II. Characteristics
a. It is a scenic art integrating music, performance,
literature, aria, and face-painting.
b. Beijing opera follows other traditional Chinese
arts in emphasizing meaning, rather than
accuracy.
c. In Peking Opera, audiences are given great
room for imagination; the props traditionally
included only "a table and two chairs".
d. The richness of colors and patterns of the
makeup and costumes is probably one of the
most astonishing features of Peking Opera. Each
role has its meaningful makeup(Lianpu) and
each costume gives fundamental information
about the nature of the characters.
e. Four Artistic Elements
Song(Singing)- utilized to intensify the
appeal of the art by all kinds of tones.
Speech(Dialogue)- the complement of
singing which is full of musical and
rhythm sensation. The performer speaks
in changbai, a speaking technique
different from the daily speaking, in
which honorific terms abound.
Dancing(Acting)- refers to the body
movements requiring high performing
skills.
Martial Arts- the combination and
transformation of traditional Chinese
combat exercises with dances.
III. Roles/Characters
a. Sheng (Main Role):
Lao Sheng- middle-aged man with a
beard who acts as the decency figure.
Xiao Sheng- means young man without
a beard.
Wu Sheng- a martial character for
roles involving combat.
b. Dan (Any Female Role)
Zheng Dan a strong-minded middle-
aged woman who behaves elegantly.
Hua Dan- little girls who often live in
the bottom of society.
Lao Dan -refers to the senior woman.
Wu Dan- a female who is good at
fighting.

the pictures.
So today we are going to learn about a type of an opera wherein it is defined as the Epitome of China which is
the Peking Opera.

g. Jing- Painted face often refers to male characters with unique appearance or personality, a
comic role or villainous character or righteous person. A forceful character.
h. Chou- is a male clown role. The chou usually plays secondary roles in a troupe. Chou characters
are generally amusing and likable, if a bit foolish.
Peking Opera plays can be distinguished in 'civil plays' (wenxi) and 'martial plays' (wuxi). Civil plays focus on the
relationships between characters, and tell stories of love and intrigue. In these types of plays principally dan and
older roles appear on stage. A famous excerpt of a civil play is, for example, "Farewell my Concubine", which
describes the last moments of a conqueror and his favorite concubine. Martial plays generally focus on action,
acrobatics and martial arts; young sheng, jing, and chou use to be the main characters.
