THE HISTORY OF TITCHFEILD HIGH

Titchfield High School was established in 1786 in Port Antonio in an area called Free School but
is now located at Fort George St, Port Antonio the schools motto is “virtue et erudition” which
mean “by virtue and by learning”. The Jamaica School Commission took over the
management from the school’s trust in 1883. It leased, from the Government, the old military
barracks of Fort George and a day school for boys and one for girls was established in 1886 with
Major WH Plant as headmaster. At first, the school consisted of Infant, Elementary and
Secondary departments, but the elementary and infant departments later separated from the
Trust, leaving just the high school. Five courses were taught there: the three Rs – reading,
writing, and ‘arithmetic, plus Greek and Latin.

Titchfield High School was a secondary high school in Port Antonio, Jamaica in the northern
part of Portland Parish, and is the fifth-oldest high school in the country. According to the
Alumni Association of Titchfield High, South Florida chapter, as of January 2008, there were 99
teachers for 1949 students in grades 7-13.

Titchfield was the first school to win Inter-Secondary Schools Girls Championships back to
back, in 1963 and 1964 (its only two titles). In both 2011 and 2012, the school placed second
in Television Jamaica's School Challenge Quiz; in 2016,coached by Mr C. Roberts and Mr O.
Sparks, they won the competition, beating Campion College in the final match .The principal of
this wonderful institution is Mr. Richard Thompson and The vice principal is Sharon Bennett, the
dean is Ms. Johnson and the guidance counselor is Mrs. Bennett.

Subjects offered are : Library science, Guidance counseling, Mathematics, English Language,
English Literature, History, Entrepreneurship, Spanish, Information technology, Religious
education, Social Studies, Physics, Chemistry, Wood Works, Geography, Biology, Integrated
science, Music, Drama, Physical education and many more.
Titchfeild High school clubs and societies include: Math club, Chest club, Ping pong club, Science club,
Quiz club, Drama club, Choir etc. There are 6 houses at titchfeild high school these houses are: Grossett
named after F.V. Grossett a distinguished past student the color of the house is Black and Gold, Plant
house named after a former headmaster the color of this house is Green and gold, Browns house also
named after a former headmaster the color of this house is red and gold, Sherlock house named after sir
Philip Sherlock a distinguished Jamaican and former vice chancellor of U.W.I the house colors are light
blue and gold, Geddes house named after Mortimer Geddes the first past student appointed
Headmaster the house colors are white and gold, Chins house named after Lloy O, Chin a former
headmaster the house colors are purple and white.

Titchfeild has 5 labs 3 computer labs and 2 science labs
