Methodology/Research Design

A. Research Design
This study is a qualitative research that attempts to accumulate existing

information and understandings of cultural resort in Zamboanga City. The researcher

will make use of descriptive information to conclude how the proposed project will be

successful.

The research study will use historical and descriptive method of research. With

the historical method, it can give the researcher ideas what is lacking in previous works

and possibly make better ways avoiding problems of the past. Historical method will

be used to gather information about the past history of the site, significant happenings,

maps of the site, etc. Descriptive research is a method used to obtain information

relating to the current status of an issue or phenomenon to describe "what exists" within

the variables or conditions of the situation. A case study and survey type of descriptive

method will be use. It will also be used to gather information on the existing conditions

of the site, the current plans and maps, interviews, and case studies & surveys.

B. Research Environment
The research will be conducted in Zamboanga City due to the lack of promotion

in cultural tourism in the city, and the the lack of recognition in the Badjao culture.

Hence, the city has its prospect for said proposal to be conducted. Moreover, the city

still has no resort that promotes culture that adapts vernacular architecture through

sustainable design.

On the other hand, Zamboanga City is located on the western-most tip of the

Zamboanga peninsula that is a busy international port strategically located on the

Basilan straight. The city is bounded by the Sulu Sea and the West, the Moro Gulf and

Celebes Sea to the East, and is also surrounded byTungawan Bay, Taguiti Bay,
Malasugat Bay to the East, Tictoban channel and Basilan straight to the South, and

Caldera Bay to the West.

Moreover, the City’s immediate coastal lowlands are narrow, with low, rugged

hills located a short distance inland. Its highest peak is Batorampon Point, measuring

1,335 meters high (4,380 Feet) (Department of Natural Resources Region IX, 2018).

C. Data Gathering Procedure

The procedure created by the researcher must begin with determining the focus

of the study or the problem given. In this, the problem given is the “Cultural Tourism

and Bihing Tahing Resort: An architectural perception that adapts Badjao Culture”. In

order for the researcher to come up for a solution to the problem the proponent

formulate a process to achieve its goal.

Moreover, after identifying the problem, the proponent will continue on having

a background research as a scope of the problem, the objectives, significance, and

assumptions will be established in this part through review of related literature. After,

the proponent will continue on formulating methodologies that serves as guide for the

researchers to understand the situation and to be well-organized in research strategies.

To be followed by data gathering and site visits for ocular inspection and interview with

local people for a site evaluation to determine the best site for the said proposal. In

every data gathered and in every important research procedure, the proponents must

proceed to their thesis group adviser for consultations and recommendations for

clarification and to correct the errors during the research.

On the other hand, after all the gathered, the proponents will create a

comprehensive report and data management of the facts. The proponent will also

analyze the existing related structures, historical sites, groups, localities, Badjao ethnic

groups, and situations that might be a help in getting information that are not available

in textbooks, journals and previous studies.

For the presentation of data, the proponents shall categorize all the important

information and data gathered that is vibrant to their topic in order to come up with a

strong hold in the interpretation that will serve as a basis for further developments.

Then, the proponents will identify the needs and recommend solutions in performing

behavioral analysis and viability studies. In this phase, the proponents shall able to

relate and connect the studies to come up with a strong design proposal to analyze and

sort things out.

D. Instruments
The research study will use social survey questionnaires for the chosen citizen

of Zamboanga City. A Yes or No survey questionnaire will be used allowing the

respondent to choose the answer the respondent is comfortable with. The survey will

evaluate how the people will react on such projects on the respondent’s community and

what respondents think of the projects like Cultural Resort.

In depth interviews to highly reliable people that has expertise on Badjao

Culture will be conducted. Before actual interviews, the researcher will first test the

questionnaires and interview questions which are also called pre-testing of

questionnaires. Interview answers will be analyzed and interpret to suffice the research

problem. (see apendix A for the questionnaire)

E. Site Selection Criteria

The selection of the criteria is considered as one of the most important elements

affecting the success of a Cultural Tourism Resort for recuperation and lifestyle

improvement.

The ideal site for this proposal must have a healthy environment that have a

natural asset and has a story to tell which can be boast and promote through Cultural

and Eco-tourism. It must have a body of water in the vicinity that adapts in reasonable

land use and zoning, also, it must be located in a distant area that have lesser population
density, noise, and air pollution that is safe and has a peaceful community with

supportive local government.

The site criteria for this project were carefully formulated by the proponents,

which have five (5) major components which this project will require to minimize the

existing problems. Potential sites should satisfy the site requirements of the project:

Natural, Environmental and Physical Factors, Legal and Aesthetic Factors, Socio-

economic and Cultural Factors. These major components have listed requirements for

it to reach a satisfactory rate in accordance to the project proposal.

Natural Environment and Physical Factors is one of the keys to achieve the

Architectural Design objectives because it will provide Landscapes and features that is

important in a cultural resort. It will contribute significantly to the well-being and

quality of life. Living within aesthetically pleasing and culturally meaningful

landscapes enhances the tourist’s sense of wellbeing.

Legal and Aesthetic Factors is one of the factors that must be considered, the

traveling time to a destination begins to erode the number of guests willing to make the

journey and must be want to weigh the magnetism of the site with the ease of access to

it.

Socio Economic and Cultural Factors one of the critical steps to define

the desired essence and aura of resort like the opportunity to feature cultural

values in today’s development and the historically significant sites impacting

both design and construction.

Under Natural, Environmental and Physical Factors, the proponents rated the

three (3) most important content, which is the evaluation of the accessibility of natural

resources, evaluation of land area criteria, and evaluation of soil characteristics and

condition criteria; on the second part of evaluation the proponents evaluated the Legal

and Aesthetic Factors, which is the evaluation of ease of transportation, and the
evaluation of accessibility to main road criteria; lastly the proponents evaluated the

Socio-economic and Cultural Factors which is the evaluation of site potential criteria.
