Material Specification:

MPH-961 - Salt Bath Carbo- nitriding with Mechanical Polish and

Oxidative Treatment with 0.0007” Minimum Case Depth

Acceptance Criteria as per material specification:

Effective Case Depth Requirements: The effective case depth is defined as

the depth to 50 HRc. This specification requires that the effective case to be
at least 0.0007” (0.02 mm).

Heat Treatment Cycles: Parts are to be clean and free from oxides, greases
and other contaminants prior to treatment. The heat treat cycle requirements
are listed in the Table below:

Process Step Bath Temperature Time at

Temperature
Preheat -- 570ºF - 750ºF (300ºC - 400ºC) 30mins – 1hour
Nitriding Nitriding 1075ºF ± 15ºF (580ºC ± 10ºC) 90mins – 2hrs*
Cooling Oxidizing 650ºF - 750ºF (340ºC – 10 – 15mins
400ºC)
Rapid Cool Water Bath not to exceed 120ºF ---
(50ºC)
Mechanical Surface mechanically processed using a technique appropriate to the
Processing desired Processing surface finish, e.g. abrasive treatment or
polishing/lapping.
Post- Oxidising 650ºF - 750ºF (340ºC – 10 – 30mins
oxidation 400ºC)
Rapid Cool Water Bath not to exceed 120ºF ---

Cleaning Parts are to be thoroughly rinsed prior to immersion/coating with a
rust- preventative, e.g. Rust Veto MP20, 4212 or equivalent
*Process time to be recorded from the time when bath/charge temperatures have
equalized. The charge weight shall be such that the temperature drop shall not
exceed 70ºF (40ºC) and that equalization occurs within 30mins.

Surface Hardness: The surface hardness shall be 58 – 70 HRC.
