Xe-70M Controller

VSD Parameter testing and programming procedure

Supplement
Purpose:

To help troubleshoot and repair VSD related faults, and properly program the VSD
drive after a repair or component replacement

Equipment Needed:

1.-Windows-based laptop computer with XP or newer operating system

2.-CCN 24779654 Xe-70M Field Service Tool KIT, or as an alternative:

You can download the Xe-70M FST from Tech Link Solutions, or from Tech
Direct. You will also need to download the Xe-70M program files 9-16-14.

You can use any USB to RS485 converter that will work with your laptop

You can order the adapter cable, CCN 24779662, separately.

If you do not have the cable, you can actually wire directly into the back of the
Xe-70M controller, at connector X04, in an emergency.

Tech Link Solutions Screen Shot:

Make sure you save both zip folders to your computer

Whether you download the folders from Tech Direct or Tech Link Solutions, you
will need to save the folders. Once saved, then right-click on the folder and
“extract all”. Once both folders are extracted, you should move the original zip
folders to the recycle bin.

Next, run the files in the Field Service Tool folder, first, to install the tool onto the
laptop. Then run the file in the configuration folder to load all of the VSD
parameter csiv files for all of the motor options. Once installation is complete,
make sure you set up the Xe-70M FST, or field service tool, to “run as an
administrator”. The tool will not work if you do not run as administrator. The
usual way to do this is to move the cursor over the program name or shortcut,
then right-click, then choose properties, then select run as administrator and click
“apply”, then click “OK”.

Connecting to the Compressor:

If you have never used a USB to RS485 serial adapter on this laptop, before, then
you will have to load the USB driver. Most serial adapters will walk you through
this procedure the first time you plug into the USB port with it.

If you have the correct adapter cable, CCN 24779662, then you can plug directly
into the access port that is accessed in the air end and motor section of the
enclosure.

If you do not have the correct adapter cable, you can actually connect directly to
the back of the Xe-70M controller, at connector X04, see below:
If you have the proper communication cable, CCN 24779662, you plug it into the
compressor inside the enclosure, in the area with the air end and motor. You
must remove the enclosure panel to access the connector. See pictures below:

The communication cable only plugs in one way, so there are no worries about
connecting it wrong.

Functionality of the Xe-70M Field Service Tool:

There are three major functions that the Xe-70M Field Service Tool, referred to
from here out as the Xe70 FST, has;

 Configure VSD
 Get Status
 Record VSD Parameters

Two of the three of these functions will be necessary for troubleshooting

purposes, and all three for repair purposes.

Configure VSD: This function always the user to reprogram the variable speed
drive parameters. It is possible to program the incorrect parameters into the
drive, so it is critical that the motor tag data is used to pick the correct profile.
Using the Get Status and Record VSD Parameters functions helps insure you are
picking the correct parameters list.

Get Status: This function looks at the variable speed drives current programming,
and compares it to the list that was chosen by the user. Again, it is very important
to use the correct motor tag data.

Record VSD Parameters: This function is very similar to the Get Status function;
the difference is that it actually displays the programmed values in the critical
parameters. Technical Support personnel may ask for this file when helping to
troubleshoot over the phone.

Using the Xe70 FST functions:

We highly recommend performing the Get Status function, first, whenever

troubleshooting or repairing the variable speed drive. It will help insure that the
user has picked the correct motor tag data information.

When the connection between the Xe70 FST and the compressor is first made,
several choices will have to be made to complete communication. First, the motor
data has to be chosen, next the Com port has to be verified, and last, the Modbus
node has to be confirmed.

The screen will appear as below, when Get Status is clicked:

First, you access the motor data tag on the compressor, so the proper
configuration can be selected.

Next, the Xe70 FST will prompt to verify the correct USB Com Port that the USB to
RS485 serial adapter is using.
If the user is unsure of which Com Port the serial adapter is using, you can check
by going to Devices and Printers (Windows 7 or 8) or Control Panel (Windows XP).
Then left click on the serial adapter and click on Hardware, in the example here
the USB-Nano-485 is used. The Com Port is COM5.

Once the Com Port is chosen, the Xe70 FST will prompt for the Modbus Node to
be verified. Default value on a Xe-70M controller is “1”. In case the controller is
connected to a serial network, and the Modbus address has been changed, you
need to check it on the Xe-70M controller, itself, under Protocols, see below:
In the following screen shot examples, of Get Status, I purposely chose the
incorrect motor configuration, because it is an easy mistake to make, and you
should know what would show on the tool. The test machine is a R5.5N, so I
picked the first 5.5kW motor configuration I saw, “5.5kw.50hz.400v.Weg.IE3”.

When the Get Status download is completed, the Xe70 FST will ask what to name
it and where to store it.
In the next picture, the log files that were saved are shown, with notes that
indicate a data mismatch.

When the Get Status log is reviewed, there should be no “MisMatch” reported
back.

Next, we will inspect the actual motor data tag in the R5.5N that was used in this
example:
In the above picture, you can see that the motor in this 5.5kW Nirvana is actually
rated as 7.5Hp. In the upper right, you can see it is a 60Hz motor. It is also a dual
voltage motor. In this particular case, we would need the compressor data tag to
determine how it is used in this application, which happens to be 230V.

So, next, screen shots are shown of the Get Status function when the correct
motor configuration is chosen.
Xe70 FST Communication Issue:

If the Get Status function does not complete, and it actually “Times Out”, what
should be done, after confirming the Com Port and Modbus Node ID are correct,
is to cycle the power on the compressor, and make sure the communication cable
is connected and the Xe70 FST open when the compressor power is turned back
on. Serial communication sometimes has connection issues when a new Modbus
“Master” is introduced into an existing master and slave connection. In this case,
the Xe-70M controller is the original master, and the variable speed drive is the
slave. When the Xe70 FST tool is connected, it tries to become the new master,
and sometimes the Xe-70M controller will not allow communication. Cycling the
power resolves this issue.

Record VSD Parameters Function:

This function is used to look at several of the critical variable speed drive
parameters that are already programmed into the drive. It may be requested by
technical support to get this data log, and email it to the support specialist helping
the field service technician.

See the following screen shots;

Choosing ReadConfigData will get the information that Technical Support is
usually looking for. ReadFaultLog will get the last 10 alarms in the drive, this
should match the trip log in the Xe-70M controller, itself.
If you refer back to the picture of the motor tag, you will notice under 230V, it
does show 19.5 Amps, so the program is correct in this example.

Configure VSD Function:

Configuring the VSD parameters is the most critical function that can be
performed with the Xe70 FST. The tool does not have any safeguards to prevent a
user from programming the drive with the incorrect parameter files.
Programming the drive incorrectly can lead to motor or drive damage. This is why
it is highly recommended that the Get Status function is used, first, and the motor
tag data is actually inspected, every time a technician uses the Xe70 FST on a new
machine.

The following screen shots show what you will see when you configure the vsd.
Again, first you will have to manually select the motor configuration.

The current revision of the Xe70 FST has many pop-ups for this Configure VSD
function, to help prevent mistakes. Follow the pop-up instructions.
During the Xe70 FST test on the R5.5N, the Emergency Stop trip was active in the
Trip log. This machine did not show a “VSD Initialization Failure”.
The following screen shot is what is looks like while the csiv file is being loaded
into the variable speed drive:

It is recommended that you save the log information, just in case there is an issue.
There are no “MisMatches” in the above log, which is a good sign.
Using the Xe70 FST to update the Xe-70M Controller Software:

Unlike the Xe90 and 145M series controllers and the original Xe FST, the Xe70 FST
is not capable of updating the actual controller software revision. The Xe70 FST is
only used for variable speed drive parameter testing and reconfiguration.

A complete different tool is needed to update the Xe-70M controllers, it happens

to be the same Xi Programmer used on the X8i, X12i, etc. series of sequencing
controllers. Those instructions will be in a separate supplement.
