How to Play a QR Break In Game?

Retrieve one Artifact Card from Mrs. Friest at a time. Work with your
teammates to complete the challenge attached to that artifact.

Talk with your teammates and share what you’re thinking about each
artifact. You might need to work together in order to lock in the best score.

Test out what you think you know! Talk out your thinking with your
teammates. If you’re wrong, think some more and try again.

When your group solves a clue, head to Mrs. Friest (also known as The
Narrator) with proof of your success for a new Artifact Card. Complete as
many challenges as you can before the timer runs out.
Use Your Portal!

QR Break In is a timed race between student teams. You will work with your
teammates to solve one puzzle at a time. As soon as your team is through with a
puzzle, race back to Mrs. Friest to retrieve a new one.

Use your chromebook’s QR reader (search for QR in your menu).

Narrator Cards
Two narrator cards are available when you and
your team decide that you are not able to move
forward without a little help.

These hints are given to you by the facilitator of

the game who is watching and observing the
group. Cash in these cards by visiting The
Narrator at any time.

Narrator cards are not answers, just some

information to help your group get over a hurdle
or see the information in a new way.
Beware of the Penalty Box!

Certain artifacts are boobytrapped with a Penalty

Box, which will cost you precious seconds of time if
they’re not up to snuff the first time you submit
them.

Booby traps will cost you two agonizing minutes of

timeout as rival teams race ahead of you. So make
sure to double check your work before you submit!

““When you hear stories from people like you, you
feel less alone. When you feel less alone, and like you
have a community of people behind you, alongside
you, I believe you can live a better life.”
― Tommy Orange, There There

Use a blank sheet of paper and your teammates to

create an illustrated Sketchnote of “The Danger of a
Single Story.” One SketchNote per group.

Your sketch must include no fewer than 10 details from

the text, citing specific parts / paragraph numbers for
each.

Submit your sketchnote to The Narrator. But if it’s not

up to par, you’ll earn 2 minutes in the Penalty Box.
“Maybe there's something you're afraid to say, or someone
you're afraid to love, or somewhere you're afraid to go. It's
gonna hurt. It's gonna hurt because it matters.”
― John Green, Will Grayson, Will Grayson

Scan the QR Code and watch the video. Record the

lesson at the end. Make sure you all agree and then
show your team’s message using large-type.com to The
Narrator to proceed.
“There should be no room in your life for regret. If in the
moment of doing, you felt clarity, you felt certainty,
then why feel regret later?”
― Yaa Gyasi, Homegoing

Have each group member look for a newspaper article

using Newsela (found in your portal) that shares the story
of an Act of Kindness performed by a student. Choose
the most inspiring one that hasn’t yet been used and add
it to our GoogleSlide (QR Code).

Show your article to The Narrator. If it’s not up to par,

you’ll earn 2 minutes in the Penalty Box.
WATCH THIS “We believe the one who has power. He is the one who gets to
write the story. So when you study history, you must ask
yourself, Whose story am I missing? Whose voice was
suppressed so that this voice could come forth? Once you
have figured that out, you must find that story too. From
there you get a clearer, yet still imperfect, picture.”
― Yaa Gyasi, Homegoing

“I feel like my life is so scattered right now. Like it's all
the small pieces of paper and someone's turned on the
fan. But, talking to you makes me feel like the fan's been
turned off for a little bit. Like things could actually make
sense. You completely unscatter me, and I appreciate
that so much.”
― John Green, Will Grayson, Will Grayson

Work together to make a list of the ten items that have

different names depending on where you live.

Submit your lists to The Narrator. But if it’s not up to par,

you’ll earn 2 minutes in the Penalty Box.
“This is the problem of history. We cannot know that which
we were not there to see and hear and experience for
ourselves. We must rely upon the words of others.”
― Yaa Gyasi, Homegoing

Scan the QR Code and watch the video.

Find a quote or song that connects to the perspective

shared in the video. Show it to The Narrator (be
prepared to explain).
“When things break, it's not the actual breaking that prevents them from
getting back together again. It's because a little piece gets lost - the two
remaining ends couldn't fit together even if they wanted to. The whole shape
has changed.”
― John Green, Will Grayson, Will Grayson

Sit in a circle with your backs to one another. Using

your individual kits, construct a building.

stories.”

“This is the thing: If you have the option to not think about or
even consider history, whether you learned it right or not, or
whether it even deserves consideration, that’s how you know
you’re on board the ship that serves hors d’oeuvres and fluffs
your pillows, while others are out at sea, swimming or
drowning, or clinging to little inflatable rafts that they have to
take turns keeping inflated, people short of breath, who’ve
never even heard of the words hors d’oeuvres or fluff.”
