NDC DEMANDS PAYMENT OF BENEFICIARIES OF STUDENTS LOAN

TRUST FUND
28th February 2020- The Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has
noted with great concern news of government's deliberate refusal to release funds for
beneficiaries of the Students Loan Trust Fund for over a year now.
We condemn in no uncertain ways government's lack of action and empathy for students
who depend on the support from the Students Loan Trust Fund. Government's lack of
action can best be described as callous, inhumane and reflects the true agenda of the NPP
on students' welfare.
Having followed the issue for close to six (6) months, and it's impact on tertiary students,
we demand that government acts fast to mitigate the situation. Already, students are
grappling to come to terms with the hard economic times we find ourselves in and
government chooses to burden them more by refusing them their quota.
The Ministry of Finance needs no convincing to do what is morally right and backed by
law. Deliberately putting our brothers and sisters through this trauma is not acceptable.
Government cannot hide behind the flimsy excuse that it is cash strapped. We have cause
to believe that there is money available but President Akufo Addo will rather spend the
tax payer's money on things that interest him and not the Ghanaian people.
The National Democratic Congress fully endorses the demands of the Aggrieved Students'
Loan Beneficiaries and their decision to protest and press home their demands by hitting
the streets. We stand with them in these hard times. No one has to go through what they
are going through due to the inaction of government.
We serve notice to government and the relevant state bodies; Ministry of Finance,
GETFund and the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), that we will not hesitate to hit the
streets and protest this callousness if the situation festers. We will picket and occupy
these institutions till our demands are met.
