Differential Calculus – Implicit Differentiation

Name: ____________________________________________________ Date: _______________

A. Use implicit differentiation to find y’ in terms of x and y.

B. Solve the following.

𝑑𝑦
1. Find the derivative (in terms of variables) of 3x2y – y2x2 = 4y. Find y’ as equations of tangent
𝑑𝑥
and normal lines of the form y = mx + b.

2. A 25 ft-ladder is leaning on a wall. Ralph decided to climb up the ladder. The ladder began slipping
down the wall at a uniform rate of 2 ft/s away from the base of the wall. At what rate is the top of the
ladder descending at the instant when the base of the ladder is now 15 ft from the base of the wall?
3. Suppose you are blowing a balloon filling it with air at a uniform rate of 400 mm 3/s. How fast is the
radius increasing by the time it is already 20 mm long?

4. A ladder 20 ft long leans against a vertical wall. If the top slides downward at the rate of 2 ft/sec,
a. find how fast the lower end is moving when it is 16 ft from the wall.

b. find the rate of change of the slope of the ladder.
