 One of the famous philosophers john locke believed to the concept of “learning by doing.”
Learning by doing means that students learn better when they do something.
 He also added, that learning can also come from observation, and experience.
 John locke believed that all learning comes from experience. And for students to learn better,
they should experience it, and by discovering the learning on their own they will not forget it
easily.

 Moreover, since john locke believes that we also learn form observation, we should also learn
how to compare, reflect, and generalize for it is where complex ideas come from.
 John locke is also an advocate of freedom, he opposes, that king and queens should have
absolute power among its constituents. The implication of this advocacy of john locke to
classroom is that he believes that schools should give students freedom to discover their own
learning, and choose what they want to explore.

 What do you think the picture is about?

 Are you agree with having competitions in the classroom or school?

 Do you believe that competition is good for students?

 Next slide.

 Spencer said that competitions should be done in the classroom, or school, for the reason that
students must learn to be competitive to survive.

 Spencer believed that individual competitions leads to social progress.

 How? How do you think competitions leads social progress?

 Because as people continue to compete with each other they will not settle for less, but rather
they will make them selves better to beat others. Having that system in the society, the society
will produce better people, people who always keep themselves developing and improving.
Same with the school. When the schools promote competitions inside the class, or even outside
the school competitions, they will be able to produce more competitive students, and for
spencer, the more they are competitive the more they can be better.
 Aside from competitions, spencer promotes that what should be taught in school are practical
and life skills, more than merely factual and ideal. Spencer believes that the true essence of
school or education is when the students are able to use what they learn from school in real life
situations.
