PRACTICAL 05

OBJECT: - Analysis and design of water tank.

THEORY: - Reinforced concrete water tanks are constructed for storing
water. The design of reinforced concrete water tank is based on IS 3370:
2009 (Parts I – IV). The design depends on the location of tanks, i.e.
overhead, on ground or underground water tanks.

PROCEDURE: -
(i)MODELLING: -
New project>space>file name (water tank)>meter>kilo
newton>next>add beam>finish
Select on grid> 4m height of column> 3m height of tank >form a rectangle
of 7x4>select snap/node cursor>select> add beam> connect horizontal
member, base of water tank.
Select>beam cursor> select bottom beam>right click>delete.
Select >node cursor>select all the nodes.
Select>beam cursor>select all the beams.
Select>transitional repeat>select global direction (z)>number of steps
(1)>default step spacing (5)>link steps>OK
Select>bottom members not in use>delete
(ii) DEFINING OF SUPPORTS: -
Open support page>create>fixed>add
Select>support 2>select>node cursor>select bottom base
nodes>select>support 2>assign to selected nodes>assign>yes

(iii) DEFINING MEMBER PROPERTIES: -

Open property page>properties>thickness>on all the nodes
(.15)>add>close
Define>rectangle>YD [0.5], ZD [0.5],
Again, in rectangle>YD [ 0.5], ZD [0.4]>add>close.
Open Generate surface mashing>select the four nodes of a side wall of
tank>quadrilateral meshing>select meshing parameters>division>write
[1] in all blanks>apply
Select>generate surface meshing>apply the above procedure to all the
remaining plates of tanks (complete all five sides)
Select>plate cursor>select all the plates>open property page>select plate
thickness>select all the plates>assign to selected plates>assign>yes
Now, select beam cursor>select column property>rectangular
0.5x0.5>select front view>select multiple columns of tank >assign to
selected beams>assign>yes
Now, select beam cursor>select beam property>rectangular
0.5x0.4>select front view>select multiple beams of tank>assign to
selected beams>assign>yes
Now, see 3D rendered view.
(iv) APPLICATION OF LOADS: -
Open load page>load case detail>add>loading type>select>dead
load>tittle>dead load>add
Again, select>loading type>live load>tittle> live load>add>close
Select>dead load>add>self-weight>add>
Select self-weight>assign to view>assign>yes
Select >live load>add>plate load>W1(-60)>GY>add>close
Select>PR GY -60kN/m2>select the base plate of tank>assign to selected
plate>assign>yes
(now, see pressure is acting downward of the base plate of water tank)
Select>live load>add>plate loads>hydrostatic>select plates(s)>select any
one plate of water tank>done>W1[50], W2[2]>interpolate along global
axis>select Y>direction of pressure>GX>add>close
Select>live load>add>plate loads>hydrostatic load…select other plates,
as above and see the effect of loads on water tank.
Loads actions can be seen on, base plate and other four side plates of water
tank.
(v) PERFORM ANALYSIS: -
Analysis/print>no print>add>close
Analyse>run analyse>
(vi) DESIGN:-
Open design>concrete design>select current code>IS 456
Select>select parameters>select>clear>compressive strength of
concrete>yield strength for main reinforcement>OK
Select>define parameter>select clear>[0.30]>add
Select>FC>[20000]>add
Select>FYMAIN>[415000]>add>close
Select>clear>select>plate cursor>select all the plates of water tank(select
all five at once) >assign to selected plates>assign>yes
Similarly,select>FC20000>select all the plates>assign to selected
plates>assign>yes
Select >FY MAIN>select all the plates>assign to selected
plates>assign>yes
Select>commands>design slab/element>add>close
Select>design element>select all the plates>assign to selected
plates>assign>yes
Open commands>analysis>perform analysis>no print>OK
Analyse>run analyse>view output file
Open post processing>envelope of load cases in selected list>OK
Select plates>stress type>maximum absolute>apply>OK
Open reports>input>plates>output>plates centre stresses >OK
