INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS:

1. Students should be divided into 4 groups (I, II, III, IV)

2. Teaching for each group will be done by one lecturer (depends on how many of us are
available) & groups will rotate amongst the lecturers weekly the venues are Ward 10A
Hospital Wanita dan Kanak-Kanak Kuala Lumpur (HWKKKL) or Thalasssemia
Clinic/Paediatric Ward (8C, 8D,7A) Hospital Sungai Buloh otherwise stated in a different
place in the time table.

3. Every student has to do call duties during this posting. Call duties will be done from 07.30
PM - 10.00 PM at Ward 10A HWKKKL. During this time, you will shadow a medical
officer/houseman, learn from him whatever he is doing, get him to sign on the 1 st page of
your logbook (list of contents with dates) at the end of 2.5 hours of call duty. The same night
you will write a report in detail about what you have learnt that evening (procedure,
management, etc.). This will be checked and signed by your lecturer the next morning, and
you will hand over the report to him- this forms a part of your continuous assessment. You
should read about the procedures seen the same evening and ask us what you haven’t
understood next morning. This will be asked in your viva at the end of the posting. This is
also the time to learn how to handle emergencies; i.e. we do not want you to write case-write
ups in this time, but what is the immediate management of a child with seizures/
dehydration/ high fever/respiratory distress etc. Here the diagnosis is not required, but basic
essential management should be learnt. IN CASE YOU HAVE NOT DONE CALL DUTY
ON THE DATE ALLOTTED TO YOU, YOU MUST REPLACE IT BY DOING IT
ANOTHER DAY AND SHOW PROOF THEREOF TO THE COORDINATOR.

SOME NDR/CBD WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY A CLINICAL PROCEDURE

REPORT PREPARED BY ONE OF THE STUDENTS WHO HAS BEEN ALOTTED
THE TOPIC BEFOREHAND. The topics are phototherapy, nebulization, pulse oximetry,
blood collection for blood culture, oxygen administration.

4. Every student must present a minimum of TWO cases during this posting. The case should
be clerked the previous evening (a brief reassessment of the case before 08:00 AM should be
done) and written down and handed over to the lecturer in whose presence you have
presented the case next morning. He will mark you, sign it & hand it over to the coordinator
who will file it as a part of your continuous assessment. 4 cases should be prepared for
presentation daily (two cases from each subgroup). You should read about the case the night
before and come better prepared. Failure to do this means you lose an opportunity to learn
better.

5. EVERY FRIDAY YOU WILL HAVE CLINICAL ASSESSMENT DURING YOUR

BEDSIDE TEACHING - each one of you will have to demonstrate how to elicit a clinical sign.

6. ATTENDANCE must be 100% and absence is allowed only for logical approved reasons
only twice in the entire posting. Every student should be there before 08:00 AM, otherwise
he/she will be considered absent. In case of an emergency causing the student to come late/
be absent, please inform the coordinator or your group leader. If a student is absent for part
of a day, he is considered absent for that day. Medical certificate (MC) submitted for the dates
when the student should be presenting an assignment are valid ONLY if the assignment is
compensated for.

7. LOG BOOK should always be with the student with full records updated and should be
submitted on the day of the log-book viva. If log book is not submitted on the day of written
exam the student will be failed. Log- books will be checked during the mid-term assessment
too.

8. SEMINARs/ lectures/tutorials will be held at the times specified (see schedule above), in
GRAND SEASONS HOTEL CAMPUS, otherwise stated in a different place. A ROOM FOR
EACH SUCH ACTIVITY SHOULD BE BOOKED BY THE GROUP LEADER IN
ADVANCE AND FACULTY CONCERNED INFORMED. GROUP LEADER SHOULD
ALSO ENSURE THAT THE LCD AND COMPUTERS ARE THERE AND IN WORKING
ORDER. SEMINARs are also marked towards your continuous assessment.

9. IN THE 5TH WEEK you will have LOG BOOK assessments in the formats and times
mentioned in the schedule above. A STUDENT WHO HAS MISSED THESE
ASSESSMENTS CANNOT SIT FOR THEM AT THE TIME AND PLACE HE/SHE
WISHES TO. These will be counted towards your continuous assessment.

10. On the 9th of March 2020 we will teach you newborn examination in the postnatal ward
6B in HSB/Hospital Bersalin HKL. Each one of us will take one group. The group leader
should meet HOD Obstetrics and seek prior permission (MAHSA has already taken formal
permission earlier) for this.

11. A record is maintained by the coordinator of all the cases & SEMINARs presented, call
duties done, etc. and the student leader of the group, and this forms your continuous
assessment. The year coordinator will show you the different parameters included in this
table.

12. Every Friday alternatively half of students (two groups) should go to Day Care Centre
in Hospital Sungai Buloh for Thalassemia teaching, or to the Paediatric Ward Hospital
Sungai Buloh,as advised by Prof. Dr. Wan Ariffin. Clerk cases of Thalassemia who have
come to the day care center for transfusion from 8.30-9.00 am after which bedside teaching
will be conducted until 12 noon. Half the students will do activities in Grand Seasons Hotel
Campus. Please ask us how to go and clerk cases there.

13. Please read and come prepared for the tutorials and SEMINARs. PLEASE CONTACT
YOUR MODERATOR AT LEAST 7 DAYS BEFORE THE SEMINAR with the material you
have prepared for presentation, so that we can guide you with what we think you should be
presenting, and you have time to alter them if need be. Failure to do this means an opportunity
lost. You are not allowed to use power point slides for presentation of SEMINARs. Only
the whiteboard & markers should be used to explain your points.
