Transgenderism is the state of being mismatched with any specific genders,

either completely male or female. Transgender people may be identified as

heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual and asexual. As transgender people are against

the law of nature, some people think that transgender does not deserve equal rights

as normal human beings and need to be rejected. Despite facing many obstacles

and challenges, many transgender people have been successful in many career

fields. For example, Marci Bowers is the first transgender woman to become a

doctor, Laverne Cox is an LGBT advocate and actress who is best known for playing

Sophia Burset in the Netflix series "Orange Is the New Black.", and Isis King is a

model and fashion designer who is most known for being on the Tyra Banks'

"America's Next Top Model" and was the first trans woman to compete on the show.

Based on the article “Future of transgender people”, written by Nadia L.

Dowshen, the main focus of the article is about what is transgender and other people

point of view towards the transgender. The writer states that transgender are people

who don’t really feel either they are completely male or female. The writer also states

the hard feelings of being transgender when they are rejected and discriminated by

society. In my view, I totally agreed with the writer that transgender shouldn’t be

rejected by the society. Transgender is still an unusual topic to talk about in our

society. The rejection and discrimination of transgender people lead to frustration,

depression and anger. A research by The Beaumont Trust finds that the rejection is

the main cause of 88.9% of suicide among transgender youth. In this case, some of

the suggestions to overcome rejection of transgender people are conduct awareness

campaigns about transgender and their feelings in schools and colleges, conduct

public speech on transgender inequality, try not to avoid your friends and family

members who undergone transition and continue the previous relationship with
3
them, and encourage unisex or neutral bathroom options for the transgender people

in public places.

Nadia L. Dowshen states that transgender are caused biological,

psychological and environmental factors. I totally agreed with the writer’s opinion.

Based on the biological cause, the hormone that triggers the development of sex in

the mother’s womb may not function. This may result from the excess female

hormones from the mother’s system or by the foetus’s insensitivity to the hormones.

This condition is called androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS).

From the article “Basic issues in transgender mental health”, written by Ami

B. Kaplan, the writer focused on the gender dysphoria and the decision of the

transgender whether to undergo transition or not. The writer states by undergoing

transition, the transgender undergoes difficulties to explain to their family and friends,

meanwhile without transition, they have to fight against their emotions being gender

dysphoria. In this case, I agreed with the writer that by undergoing transition,

transgender are facing many difficulties such as dealing with family and friends,

loses relationship and loved ones, workplace discrimination, lack of legal protection,

poverty due to unemployment, harassment and stigma of being characterized as

mentally ill or sexually predatory, anti-transgender violence and lack of accurate

identity documents.

Based on the article “Typical result on gender therapy” by Dr. Chal Busong,

the main focus of the article is about the effects on the physical appearance of the

transgender through the gender transition therapy. The writer states that there are

negative impact on their health such as infertility and high risk of cardiovascular

disease due to long term use of estrogens and variety of drug treatment. I agreed

3
that gender therapy causes some bad effects on health. A substantial number of

transsexual women suffered from osteoporosis at the lumbar spine and distal arm.

Twelve percent of transsexual women experienced thromboembolic and other

cardiovascular events during hormone treatment. The effects of prolonged use of

estrogens are suicidal tendencies, violence, panic attacks, rage, jaundice (yellowing

of the skin or eyes), severe allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, nausea,

vomiting, liver failure, cancer, kidney or urinary problems, infection of the injection

site, stroke, or heart attack.

Although living in a culture that does not treat transgender people equally,

transgender people have made and are making significant contributions to the

society. Transgender should be given chance to live and have equal rights as other

people as they are not responsible for their state of being transgender.
