Teaching English IV

I. Objectives: At the end of the 60-minute period, the pupils should be able to attain the
following skills with at least 75% level of proficiency;
a. recognize modal auxiliaries and the condition they express;
b. show respect to one’s own cultural beliefs; and
c. use the different modal auxiliaries into meaningful sentences.

II. Subject Matter: Recognizing Modal Auxiliaries;


Reference: English Language Power4, pp. 266-272;
Materials: Charts, real objects, books and flashcards;

A. Preparatory Phase

1. Drill
Okay class I have here a word puzzle. All you
have to do is to encircle whatever words you’ve
found. There are 9 words in it and could be
vertical or horizontal in nature. Okay are you
ready? Yes teacher.

2. Review
Okay class did you still remember our previous
lesson? Yes teacher.
Okay class what was it all about? Our topic last meeting teacher was all
about making an announcement.
Very good. Okay anybody from the group will
give me an example of an announcement? Me teacher. ( Expected answer)

3.1 Motivation
Okay class what do I have here? A wheel teacher.
Okay very good. What have you observed? There are words in it.
Very good. What are those? Everybody read. Could, can, might, should, will and would
Very good. Now let say that I am your fairy
godmother, and when there is a fairy godmother
What will you do? You will ask for what? A wish teacher.
Exactly, then I will spin the wheel and when the
wheel stop into certain word, you will make a
wish using that word in a sentence form.

1. Presentation
This afternoon, we are going to tackle all
about Modal Auxiliaries. Are you ready? Yes teacher.
1.1 Setting of Standards
But before that what will you do if somebody
is talking here in front of you? Behave, listen, cooperate, set properly,
participate and raises our hands if we
want or have an answer.
Okay very good. Can I expect that from all of
you? Yes teacher.
1.2 Springboard
Have you ever heard the word superstitions? What are they? Read the list the below to see examples
of common Filipino Superstition. Underline the Modal Auxiliaries.
1. Sleeping while your hair is wet might cause blindness.
2. You must not marry within the same year as your siblings, or you will have bad luck.
3. You should jump on New Year’s Eve, so you will grow taller.
4. When someone in your family dies, you may only take a bath after three days.
5. If you can whistle, you can make the breeze stronger.
6. Sweeping the floor at night shall give you bad luck.
7. If you would like to be smarter, you ought to sleep with a book under your pillow.
8. You could get sick with anemia if you take a bath at night.
